You have lemur questions. I have no answers, but Dr. Lydia Greene, a lemur scientist does. And she is willing to let me lob our curiosities at her, so let's have those questions, folks.

Heck yes lemur creatures,

Olivia Eliasson

Is it true that no other species have blue eyes except humans and lemurs???

Adam Foote

How did they get to Madagascar? Are lemurs and New-World primates closely related? More so than lemurs and African primates?

Amanda

Do they have object permanence and do they recognize people?

Mimz

Winnie’s a Witch

why are their noses wet…. and at what point did they split off and evolve into lemurs?

Celeste

How are the lemurs at the lemur center able to adjust to a climate like that of Durham, NC, which I think is much different from Madagascar! Have you seen any physical adaptations like fur changes compared to wild lemurs?

Holly Spencer

What is your most memorable lemur encounter?

Hezy Anholt

Is it true that lemurs, unlike other primates, aren't scared of snakes?

Lizzy Martinez

Hahah this question for me too!! Also the number of times "Zoboomafoo, and the Kratt brothers! While walking in the woods one day, Chris and Martin saw something strange..." starts playing in my head out of nowhere is pretty ridiculous but great.

Hezy Anholt

They are called wet-nosed primates? This is too cute. Tell me more.

Keegan Newman

How strong are their tails? And are there any other uses for their tails other than balancing? Thanks!!

Cyntia B

What is a lesser-known fact about lemurs? How hard are they to study?

Heidi & Qtip!

*FTQA* WTH is going on with those berserko tails?!? Like, I get why having a tail in a jungle forest is a thing (I've always been jealous of my cat's tail, I tell him this several times a week at least!), but why is it so bushy & stripey & lonnngggg AF & crazy looking? It looks like a zebra exploded & the lemur came along & was like, this here could be high fashion, & glued a bunch of zebra hair onto his tail to be more interesting (or to express himself, like a lemur's gotta distinguish himself, even amidst a crowd of dapperly dressed gentle-lemurs... )... Anyway I simply must know or I. will. die.

Jane Nelson

Why are they so heckin' cute? Specifically, why do their faces always look like they're deeply scandalized?

Julie Glass

Just how far can they leap?

April Carter

FTQA - I know wild animals are always better off in the wild or in a specialty center like a wildlife sanctuary, but how do lemur/human interactions go? Would a lemur make a good pet?

Popita

What is the purpose behind their orange eyes?

Alia Myers

Tell me about zaboomafoo

Austin Broadwater

FTQA: Why don’t lemurs appear outside of Madagascar? Or is there fossil evidence of lemurs in other countries or continents?

Alyssa Ranker

Has Dr. Greene ever read "The Katurran Odyssey"?? It's a beautifully illustrated book with many lemur characters, including the ring-tailed protagonist, Katook.

Average_pi

why the eyes and quirky fingers ? Those fingers are soooooo long

Alyssa Ranker

How do lemurs see so well in the dark? If they have a tapetum lucidum, are they the only primates who've retained this trait?

Mary of the Grapefruit

Are we more related to lemurs? Or were they the "first primate"? Just how smart are they? Can I snuggle them?

Katie Harris

Talk about Zoboomafoo!!! I definitely had some stuffed animal lemurs as a child and always thought they were awesome probably cause of the zoboomafoo show, just jumping around everywhere in Madagascar!

Hannah Thorpe

Are there any updates on genetic studies linking lemurs to flying foxes?

Jenn Macgillivray

Mangatsika! Did Zaboomafoo increase the public awareness of lemurs? Are they the only type of animal only found in one country?

Laura Atkins

From my 4yo, Benji: How do they leap so far?

Miranda Garniss

FTQA are they as soft as they look? Are some lemurs softer than others? I want to rub my face in them, but won't because laws

Laura Atkins

Also, I thought he learned the F word because I listened to Ologies so much until one day he announced during dinner that he learned it from my husband 🙃

Courtney Horowitz

From my Smologist - Is it true that 50% of lemurs are found only in Madagascar?

Guido

Why only in Madagascar? Does it have unique conditions and challenges that the ancestors of lemurs had to adapt to?

Piper Jones

FTQA Do lemurs have special adaptive gut microbiomes like other primates? Is there a special enzyme or environment that makes them different?

Devin McPeek

What distinguishes a lemur from other types of primates? I.e., what makes on species a lemur and another a great ape for example? Is it the tail?

Earl of Greymalkin

1) Why are lemurs?? Do they fill an evolutionary niche like foxes or cats? 2) What do they smell like? 3) Do the tail stripes have a purpose? 4) How smart are they? Do they use tools? 5) Why do they have so much more snoot than other primates? 6) How do humans tend to interact with them outside of conservation type efforts? Do they raid the trash bins? 7) Are there zoonotic pathogens that lemurs can pass to humans? 8) Have lemurs ever been deliberately or accidentally released somewhere they are not native and started a wild colony?

Matt Ceccato

Are they herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores?

Fi Cameron

Do lemurs in the wild really like to “move it move it”? But for real, would lemurs react to music, if so what would their reaction be?

Toni Spumoni

How old -evolutionarily- do we think lemurs are? were there direct lemur ancestors that are ancient like sloths?

Sarah king

Do they mate for life?

Joshua Tauzin

What is the -ology of lemurs? Why did Austin Powers think they burrowed? Do they actually burrow, because I thought they were tree-dwellers. (This is definitely a dumb question for a smart person and Dadward has taught me to feel no shame in asking.) (Tauzin rhymes with causin’ problems)

Matt Hirschl

How are lemurs in Madagascar evolutionary different than lemurs native to other places?

Anna Frazier

how are they only on madagascar? what did they evolve from?

Anna Frazier

since they’re primates too, do we share any silly habits with lemurs? they seem sooo different

Matt Hirschl

My wife, Jenna, would like to know what talent a lemur would most likely do at a talent show?

TJ Mckenna

Why aren’t there any lemurs in North America?

newt_

I know Madagascar had a MASSIVE and Diverse Lemur population before Humans showed up. Any cool/interesting info Dr. Greene has about those now extinct species would be dope!

Krista Jones

Why do lemurs hate water so much? It seems like all it takes to contain them is a small moat

curly fry

What’s the deal with their eyes?

jason freer

Will they go out of their way for a specific food treat?

Isabelle Newman

Hi!! Super scientific question here but I read her papers and have a specific question from them. In one of her papers she demonstrated that cathemeral and diurnal lemurs are affected differently by sleep deprivation, and im curious to know how she thinks that possible. I think her work is so interesting and im so excited she’s on the show!!!!

curly fry

Are they nocturnal?

curly fry

Is there a reason for their stripes?

curly fry

Can you talk a bit about their social life/structure?

Allie Brown

Why are their tails striped? And do they ever fall? Then do they get hurt?

Allie Brown

Why are they only on Madagascar?? How did that island get so goddamn lucky?

Allie Brown

What noises do lemurs make?

Allie Brown

How did lemurs evolutionarily evolve?

Sonjabird

What can lemurs teach us stupid humans, if they thought we were worth the effort?

Kate Timms

With so many species of lemur in Madagascar how have they diversified to fill niches usually filled by different animals?

Sutton Moore

Why do they hop sideways like they do?

Aileen Lands

How are they primates?!? They look SO different! Also, where do they rank in the primate intelligence spectrum?

Taylor Wade

do they need volunteers at the lemur center (please i’m begging you)

Heather Moore

What is the emotional spectrum of lemurs? They are so easy to personify and I wonder what they actually experience...

ZZ

A zoo plaque said that lemurs smell fruity - what do they smell like?? Do they fluoresce under uv light like some other diurnal/nocturnal mammals?

Marianne Thomas

I've never heard of that. Going to look it up. Any favourite facts/resources before I look? Thanks 😊

Marianne Thomas

Some breeds of cats, dogs, & horses do. But obvs all domestic. I didn't know lemurs could have blue eyes!

Your New Favorite Animal Podcast

Aye-ayes (sounds like eye eye to help you with pronunciation Alie. 😊) have that crazy long middle finger that looks so fragile. Do they have problems with that finger? If it breaks, would it make them unable to find food?

Aoife Holmes

What is their life expectancy?

Aoife Holmes

What sort of colours and variations do they come in? I have only ever seen grey lemurs and they all look very similar

Storm

a question from my mum: why do lemur mums just leave their young if they’re not strong enough? (she’s still mad over that one david attenborough episode where the lemur mum abandons her baby because it couldn’t hold on)

Jenna Congdon

I am so excited to hear about lemurs, but the only lemur I know anything about is Zaboomafu, and therefore I'm having a hard time coming up with a smart question. Instead, I'll ask a dumb question: how soft are lemurs, on a scale of iguana spikes to chinchilla fur? They look hella fuzzy.

Colleen Sellwood

Do we have any idea why ring tailed lemurs have ring tails? Is it just to look jazzy?

Pavka34

How endangered are lemurs? What is the long term prognosis? Aren’t most species restricted to Madagascar?

Madison Woofter

First time question asker, I second this!

Madison Woofter

First time question asker, how many babies do they typically have at a time? Is it only one or often multiple?

Darren Bush

Aye-ayes. That is some freaky-ass evolution. Sorta like a mammalian woodpecker with a finger instead of a beak. What's with Madagascar?

Dylan V

Lemurs are primates right? How many generations do we have to go back to have a common ancestor? Our great x200000 grandparents would be shocked at how different their decedents turned out.

Gene Phillips

Were there ever lemurs that were much larger than the ones alive today?

Krysten

FTQA: Why are ring-tailed lemurs the only members of the Lemuridae family who have tapetum lucidum? They're strictly diurnal so what's up with that? Ring-tailed lemurs are my favorite animal in the whole world and I got so excited about this episode that I momentarily forgot how to breathe.

Maya Kakkava

in our local zoo there is a "lemur park" where you can pet and interact with lemurs. I always thought that it must be very overwhelming and stressful for the lemurs to interact with so many humans and many overenthusiastic kids chasing them around. Are they actually a social easygoing animal or are they forced to endure it?

Ron

These little guys are amazing! How intelligent are lemurs and how large are their brains?

Cate Muenker

What makes them special? Did evolving on Madagascar make them genetically distinct from other primates? What unique differences do they have compared to other primates?

Spencer J

With aye-ayes using percussive foraging, are there any examples of co-evolution between them and their prey where the grub have learned to run away from the tapping sound or attack their foraging finger when inserted into the tree? Also do the aye-ayes detect grub mainly through auditory feedback from the tapping or can they feel the grub with their special finger? If auditory, has there been any research as to how noise pollution might affect foraging success?

Spencer J

Are lemurs bothered by gawkers? Is there ever enough leaping, lemuring space for them in enclosures? Thank you!

Patience P.

Why do lemurs have ringed tails?

PapoGuapo

FTQA (unless you used my crab question I just posted): For the Crypsis (cryptic?) species of Lemurs, how do they tell eachother apart, vocalizations? Scents? Can some of those species interbreed or is this an example of that blurred line of what's a species? And how do humans tell them apart? Behaviors or do we need to gene test each one?

GhoulNextDoor

What are the leading theories of how lemurs came to inhabit Madagascar?? I’ve heard of the raft theory and the idea of an early lemur ancestor floating along on a little vegetation raft is incredibly charming
