Ooooh, after a heavy topic last week, I felt like we needed a "primates bouncing through the trees" episode. So Lemurology with Dr. Lydia Green is up!

Be honest: did you know lemur facts were this bonkers? And yes/no to Madagascar? I suppose that was a yes on the record, so I better start packing...

I hope everyone is staying cozy. Let me know if you have a favorite lemur. Hands down, it's an aye-aye for me.

Lemurologically,

Alie McPoddad

Lemurology (LEMURS) with Dr. Lydia Greene - alie ward

How did these tree-hopping furry angels evolve to be the cutest thing in the world, objectively speaking? They have saucer eyes, wet noses, chunky tails, toe claws, matriarchies, a feature film starring role, and all the mystery of 100 species spending millions of years on a remote island.

Yes! Pressing play now!!

Matt Hirschl

My wife and I’s question made it on the show! Yay!

Amelia Díaz Ettinger

tell me when you are going and I will join you! Madagascar here we come

Alie Ward

Yessss! We didn't address a talent show, but I knew Jenna would love to hear it anyway!

Alie Ward

you might have to call yourself JENN "mouse lemur" ALVAREZ after this

Hi Alie. I haven't listened to this episode yet, though I'm sure it's amazing. But I do have a question for you. Shortly before you got sick, in like June/July you asked for questions for a whole bunch of episodes. I don't remember all of the topics, but I do remember some. And not all of the episodes have aired. Are you saving them or were they never recorded due to you being sick? It's totally understandable if that's the case. I'm so happy you took the time off and are healthy now. Your health is way more important than any episode. I'm just curious. Thank you for the great pod!

Matt Hirschl

Amazing! What an excellent episode. Perfectly timed topic after NDEs (although an also excellent and unexpected topic).

Matt Hirschl

PS…the Hirschls questions have made it two episodes in a row. What’s the record?

Fantastic episode! Madagascar is on my places-to-see-before-I-die list. I thought her reflection on the ecological impacts of humans issue was very thoughtful. I hope to get there one day. Maybe we should organize a small group trip?

Alie Ward

Connor! Great question. They are all recorded and I have a whole bank of them that will air but they got a pre-empted when I was sick, and then for Spooktober because they weren't on-theme (although Abstract Mathematics was ALMOST our suuuper scary Halloween episode...) The reason most haven't aired yet is because a lot of them were social sciences and I like to vary the topics, so we get some biology, medical, culture, zoological, weird random objects etc. So the last few weeks I've been recording more animals so I can make sure I have a good balance. Great question and don't worry, they'll all come out! Was there one episode you're really excited for?

Alie Ward

I think maybe Earl of Greymalkin or Jenn Alvarez have maybe had the most questions air? Earl always asks a bunch at once

Alie Ward

April through October, perhaps!

Alie Ward

I mean, sometime in between those months, ha!

Hannah Gorrie

This was such a great episode!! I thought the bit about local lore and taboos was fascinating; I love when something I was wondering about comes up organically in the interview! AND I'm living for the background on Zaboomafoo, a childhood fav

Raja

Oh, I'm enhoyng it!!

Between Dumplings

We must have an Ologite who's a professional travel arranger person?

Connor they them

Oh okay. Thank you. The episode I'm most excited for is one I didn't even ask a question on. I just love the topic. It's reading. I'm a big reader and always have been. I read so much that when I got in trouble as a kid, instead of putting me in timeout or taking away my toys or electronics, my parents would take away my books. I'm definitely looking forward to that one. I'd also like to thank you for the recommendations you give for the different projects the ologist have been involved with. I started listening to Ologies earlier this year and binged it. So I heard the years of recommendations over a short time. This year I asked for some ologist's books for Christmas. Additionally I binged Flash Forward with Rose Eveleth and am currently binging Scishow Tangents and Completely Arbortrary. I really love what you do. Thank you.

This was such an incredible episode! If anyone had any more info on their familial structures or societial politics that would be amazing! I had no idea lemurs had a matriarchal society - such a huge difference to many other animals! Fascinating lil bouncy dudes 😁

Olivia Eliasson

I did not think that the drug thing was going to be a yes/no.I thought it was going to be like dolphins and pufferfish! So interesting! love this episode!!!

When Dr. Lydia said that you may have to stop her if she rambled, it made me so happy. Thank you Alie for giving scientists a chance to ramble and tell us the cool stuff they know!! I always find myself asking, 'how the heck did that thing evolve!?!' and I was thrilled to get an answer, especially one that started back with Pangea!

Susan G

This episode DELIGHTED me in a way that I desperately needed. So much fun, such an incredible guest. Thank you!

One of my current life goals is to plant trees for lemurs in Madagascar! I worked at a zoo and my favorite animals to give facts about were the lemurs! They’re so amazing!!

Merryn Lush

I had no idea how little I knew about lemurs before this. I teared up when she said Zoboo had grandkids ❤️ 😭 I’m so happy to know he had a lovely life. The Kratt brothers rank up there with Bill Nye and Ms. Frizzle/Lily Tomlin as 90’s kid science royalty.

Krysta

I was wondering if momo from avatar the last air bender would come up at all (he’s a winged lemur) - guess I should have submitted my first question about it!

Mary Eberle

I thought she’d mention the StarTrek episode where the crew genetically regressed and Picard became a lemur.

Colby Evans

Discussion above made me think of it. Maybe you could get linked up with Phil Plait’s side business ‘Science Getaways’ to have a group trip of Ologites somewhere interesting. I’d be in!

Rik

Finally got to this episode. It was fantastic! I hope can book a visit there - think of all the cool other things along the way (other than the 24 hour flight, maybe a stop somewhere in-between with amazing cool other things to explore?)

Shannon Bartels

I had this idea too! Would be an amazing opportunity for a fun travel episode with a group of ologites!

Emmett

I had NO idea there were so many species of lemurs! This is my new favorite fact to share with people as I take every available opportunity to slip Ologies into all my conversations :)

Lynn Rowicki

Can’t wait for the Field Trip episode of “ Dadward Goes to Madagascar”!! This was an instant classic episode.

Amanda Hurley

Great idea! Instantly adding this idea to my bucket list!

Lindsay Mixer

As someone who also finds lemurs (and aye-ayes!) super cute but other primates super scary (I can’t even go through the primate section of zoos), I felt so seen in this episode 🥹

ChickenChomper

I really enjoyed this episode - especially the tip to donate to the Mahaliana Lab. I had visited Madagascar a while ago and after returning I really wanted to donate to a conservation research program there. The only issue I've had is that when I use their Papal link it charges me a $130 NZD conversion fee. Does anyone know a way to get around this extra fee? I'd like it all to go to them! :) Thanks Alie! Hope you are feeling better!

Teale Vee

This was the best ologist ever!!! She was fun, fact-filled, friendly and full of good vibes. I enjoyed her immensely, she’s my new fave! Thanks Alie you rock

Alison Muller

WHY HAVE YOU NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE? Madagascar 2005? Fell in love with lemurs I’d never seen before. Still in. Love, more intellectual and scientific now but love love love.
