It’s here. An instant classic featuring a sit-down chat about ATC: All Things Crab. We also lurk behind-the-scenes through the Natural History Museum’s crustacean bunker and it was so good and wacky that we had to make it a 2-parter.

Come learn which crabs are NOT actual crabs, teeny tiny romantic crabs, giant land crabs that can crack skulls like a walnut, how to name a crab, the most demure killers, Amelia Earhart’s (possible) final destination, pinching forces that rival carnivores, Sea Monkeys, invasive sea spider-like monsters, undersung delicacies, Hollywood crabs and so much more.

Absolutely love this episode and I hope you dig it. Also: a secret that might save your life. Maybe.

Okay, let me know what you thought!

Crabs will reign,

Connor they them

This episode is so good! I live by the Chesapeake Bay and have a lot of experience with blue crabs. They are definitely feisty, but I love them. Also the history of old bay was fascinating.

Alie Ward

We talk all about it in the episode! It's live wherever you get podcasts!

Alie Ward

Can you believe that!? I went down a real wormhole and loved every minute of it. Let us know if you ever make it to Reisterstown, and say hi to Gustav for me.

mariia k

ahh gotta love them 2-parters

mariia k

love the crab hats🙏🏻

Alie Ward

Haha! It happens! But you have another day to submit Capybara questions if you haven't already!

Alie Ward

I completely forgot to mention that we were wearing crab hats. HOW DID I FORGET THAT MARIIA?!

mariia k

IDKK BUT YOU BOTH LOOK VERY CRABBY HANDSOME🦀

Iso Partee

I loved all the info on the coconut crab! So Strong 💪💪 also interesting thinking about their taste….I always want to like crab, but I just can’t ! And I love raw oysters, so you’d think I’d like crab too? I guess that makes me team crab 🦀 because I’m not eating them lol

Evan Davis

Wish I had a crab hat....

Mark Hewlette

What's the deal with hermit crabs? When did they decide they needed a home? Are there others that have houses? When they outgrow their houses, is it ever the case that they cannot find a new home? Do fisherman actually put themselves in peril fishing for King Crabs? If so, why is this? What are the biggest crabs? Do people eat them? Are any crabs endangered? Thank you both so much!

Alie Ward

Oh, the episode is already edited and live! Part 1 is up and Part 2 is up next week!

Mark Hewlette

That's great! But a bummer I missed asking the questions. I'm sure all of your brilliant listeners asked these questions multiple times. Can't wait to listen! Thank you for all you do!

Emma is Rosey

I was very excited to hear abt coconut crabs!! Little freaks

howdycrab

Huge day for crabs 🦀

Hailey

I was first introduced to coconut crabs by the picture from this article https://allthatsinteresting.com/coconut-crab... I'm glad an ologist confirmed that they can indeed climb trash cans, bc I was never sure how real the picture was

Hailey

I was/am little frightened of them but they have my respect!! 🦀 Lots of love for our crab friends and other ocean arthropods!!

Emily P

The hats really brightened up my inbox today! It is the accessory we didn't know we needed!

Naomi Jane

I have a shark hat, can I join the sealife head gear club? 😆

Nevena Georgieva

Great ep, holy crab! And thanks for the crab gear link, Alie. I'm gonna get the hat and wear it around the apt when I need a bit of whimsy in my day.

Ashley Marrs

I loved hearing the history of Old Bay! and I’m deeply disturbed by the size of coconut crabs and Japanese spider crabs!

Nathalie Jones

This is prob tmi but I sliced the shit outta my thumb washing dishes and I finished this episode while trying to distract myself from the ouch! So the “attacked by crabs” bit at the end felt very ~immersive~…

Olivia Lester

hold up did adam just say one of these roly polies is a maRsUPIaL???? I couldn't catch which stuntin' sucker it was...also roly poly ologist anybody?

Hannah Gorrie

I'm so glad to learn that crab muscles are not goo... Something I certainly could have googled but must have been waiting for this episode instead. Such a great episode, thank you Alie!!

Amy E Kirby

The asides in the episode are 🔥- sea monkeys, cancer, crab butter, animatronic egg white Castaway crabs! ❤️❤️

Ginkoman

Thinking about those hermit crabs - when they outgrow a shell and are out searching for a new one, when they are essentially without a home, do you think they camp out under freeway overpasses and shiver at night like the poor homeless people we have in our cities?

Daniel J McDonald

Once it's pointed out that it's a Hermit Crab the similarities are SO obvious I'm almost ashamed I didn't figure it out on my own.

Olivia Lester

can one actually get a crab species named...asking for a friend aka my dog

Daniel J McDonald

They are so vulnerable out of their shells they won't change unless they have a replacement lined up. In the wild they will actually gather and trade shells: a big shell will show up and if the first crab to find it is too small, it will wait for a bigger crab to come along and swap, and grab it's shell instead. If other crabs notice they'll start a daisy chain.

Lizzy Martinez

I love that you brought up Amelia Earhart's plans crash on an island with coconut crabs because of my childhood story of who I was in my former life. Essentially when I was 2.5-3 years old ('95-'96), I told my mom and grandpa that I was Amelia Earhart and I crashed on a small island with my pink plane, and that I died on the island. They were so shocked because I had never been told anything about her, and the last people knew was she must have crashed somewhere over the ocean. They assumed I didn't know pink wasn't the name for red, too. Even weirder, I remember this conversation and what I pictured in my brain when I said it, and I pictured a small coconut tree covered island at the edge near some water. Fast forward to a few years ago and I saw someone say that your birthmark is where you were injured and what caused your death in your former life. Now this is stretching it lol but my birthmark is a decent size behind my knee, which is where your popliteal artery is. What if Amelia broke her leg at that spot or got pinched so hard there by a coconut crab?! Anyways thanks for reading lol!

Merryn Lush

Coconut crabs are now one of my favourite creatures and before this episode I didn’t know they existed! I can’t stop looking at them!!

Shelley Rank

The first part of this episode has been such a pleasure to listen to given all the craziness in the world right now. Thank you for asking all the important questions. Also I totally understood your story about hanging onto the crab shell when you were six- I think I was around the same age when I kept two dead washed ashore jellyfish in a pail of sea water as my “pets” during a beach vacation for a long weekend.

Erin Everton

“The only animal I’ve ever had actually try and attack me was a blue crab” And that’s how we do it!! 😤🦀💛🖤❤️🤍 grew up here and never heard the history of old bay before, that was way cooler than I expected it to be. I jeered at the McCormick building on my way past it on behalf of Gustav

Emily Krieger

the saga of the cinnamon toast crunch shrimp tail is one of those small delights that make life worth living

Merryn Lush

Omg the energy of part 2 is so unique and genuinely low-key hilarious.

AB

Wish I had a gastric mill 🦀🦷

Cuddly Turtle

Almost 40 years of living in Maryland and I never knew the Old Bay story. Loved this aside.

Margaret Downs

OMG in part 2 when you got to talking about how much he enjoyed the interview, I felt EXTREMELY seen as someone who both is convinced everyone hates her and has been told by a surprising number of people that they thought *I* didn't like them.

Dave Cannon

Okay... What do I do if I find a P crab, and it's alive? They're partnered up, so do I have to find it's mate? What if I can't tell if they're alive? Should I stop eating oysters? I live in NE Florida, do I even have to worry about it? I need second bite at the apple revisit episodes....

Kathleen Sachs

That would be awesome if you could have him back on to talk about Shrimp. I used to have Sea Monkeys as a kid and I squeed when I heard him talk about fairy shrimp and brine shrimp. Also, I love mantis shrimp, which have been known to crack the glass of their aquariums.

Mac

not sure if this is the right place for it, but for folks who really enjoy all the animal ologies, An Immense World by Ed Yong is such an excellent read talking about all things perception and how it differs from species to species!!

Patrick W

I guffawed in Part 2 when he just asks, with slight uncertainty: "Are all your Patrons going to be asking...?"

Gloria Yu

What about interviewing an orca expert?????????????

Roxanna McLaughlin

I LOVED the Carcinology shows!!! Thank you so very much for ALL your shows. My goodness, I can only imagine the flurry of your thoughts as you ponder the next ones!

Keegan Newman

Thank you for asking my question!! 💚

Max G

I came here to say this lol. That sent me.

Lynette Dávila

New here. I came to say this. We need him for shrimp.

OtterKhaos (KrisP)

The timing of these episodes is uncanny! I just read Chesapeake Requiem for our library's History Book Club this month and boy oh boy did I learn about crabs, lol. It was like reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance-- I ended up skimming over all the crab stuff b/c uff... sorry. THIS OLOGIES THOUGH, no skimming here! So I got all the human interest stuff in the book and will suggest these episodes for anyone who wants to learn about crabs in a way more enjoyable format! Also, just got this in an email and thought to share if it hasn't been already! https://www.crabdatabase.info/en

Sara Cooper

But how about Sally go lightly crabs? Otherwise known as Sally Lightfoot crabs saw them in the Galapagos, doing the skittering or scuttling sideways, and fell in love.

Rick T

Yay! My first on-air mention

Alie Ward

Absolutely life changing for them

Alie Ward

I can't believe I forgot to mention them in the episode!

Alie Ward

I loved that Old Bay history too!

Alie Ward

Oh noooo! I took up whittling in March 2020 and immediately sliced my hand, and fainted over the bloody sink

Alie Ward

Ahaha, I think he said crustacean and isopod!

Alie Ward

I did my best, Amy. I did my damned best

Alie Ward

YESSS! I hope you can visit his grave and sprinkle some Old Bay on it!

Alie Ward

It was like a Daily show interview. Or a Borat movie. Surreal.

Alie Ward

Try swallowing some teeth maybe? But don't

Alie Ward

I'm rather obsessed and went down a deeeeep rabbit warren on this one

Alie Ward

Oh my god thank you. My people-pleasing anxiousness was off the charts and I thought he wanted to bean me in the face with a dogdeball

Alie Ward

I think you can still eat it? But I think those pea crabs have met their final destination, sadly. I hope they party in maritime heaven with the oyster

Alie Ward

Yes I certainly need a manitis shramp ep

Alie Ward

I had to leave it in. I had to.

Alie Ward

YES! I wanna go to Vancouver maybe...

Alie Ward

I loooove planning future episodes! It's my favorite part of the job, honestly

Alie Ward

Hell yeah, Keegan! Thanks for asking it!

Alie Ward

I was just trying to check Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance out of the library! I have no idea what it's about but someone suggested it like a decade ago...

Alie Ward

Woooow, this is the first I've heard of them!

Alie Ward

Hell yeah! Thank you for asking! I try to say as many names as possible and I love when people hear theirs!

Lizzy Martinez

Oh em gee I saw that!! We're getting close to really knowing what happened I think!

Emily P

I wanted to shout out both you Alie and the wonderful guest for having a conversation about the social misunderstanding that was happening with tone of voice and some language content. This was really good modelling of how we can come to understand people who are different from us, and just clarify what we are interpreting vs what is actually happening. I think lots of people will relate to both you and the guest in this instance. A wonderful and relatable human moment... "I thought you hated me!!"... It's something we should all say more and think less 😂😂

Nathalie Jones

I nearly did but my mom not picking up my panic call brought me right back to life……

OtterKhaos (KrisP)

Hi!!!!!!!!! I read it way back in HS so honestly I couldn't really tell you what it's "about" anymore, though one of my absolute favorite quotes I pulled from that book: "We keep passing unseen through little moments of other people's lives." <3 I should probably pick it back up, I bet 2 decades later it would resonate differently! The parallel w/ Chesapeake Requiem and Zen &... is basically in Zen &... there are passages of "motorcycle maintenance" that I just glossed over, definitely not important to me (not then, and esp. not now! #donorcycles) In Chesapeake Requiem there's a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooot about crabbing. The passages about crabs themselves were cool, but when they went into all the business side of it I checked out, haha. Very interesting book though, the main storyline is about an island in the Chesapeake Bay vanishing due to climate change and the islanders who mentally and culturally live in the past, refusing to believe in climate change (their guy said it's a hoax after all...), and that cognitive dissonance. I just got through ep. 1 and half of ep. 2 of your carcinology 'sodes and I'm so excited to have all these cool crab facts to bring up at the book club tonight!!

Nick C_

Until this ep I was weirdly squicked out by crabs and now I’m truly fascinated

Caroline Fox

As a Marylander who grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, eating / catching blue crabs, this episode made me SQUEAL with delight. Thank you 🩷

Erica Flory

I was able to answer a science trivia question at north carolina museum of natural science because of this episode
