I hope no one had plans for Saturday night! I am very pleased to share the world premiere of Nelson's Battles: Cape St Vincent. Although less well known than Nelson's victories at the Nile and Trafalgar (both of which we'll cover in due course), his conduct at this battle is almost unbelievable... I will let the video do the talking!

This series has been many months in the making - in fact, as soon as we cracked HMS Victory in 3D, the obvious question was - can we get 30 of them together and make them shoot at each other?! Big thanks to David of DC Interactive for all his patience and brilliant 3D work, fellow history YouTuber Drachinifel for research and expert advice, and Royal Museums Greenwich for sharing some wonderful images.

Typos for Merch is in effect - please let us know if you spot one (to clear up some apparent confusion - we do not add deliberate mistakes for you to find! The idea is to help us find and fix any small errors ahead of the YouTube release).

This one won't be out on YouTube for a few weeks, so I hope you enjoy the early access, and please let me know what you think. And thanks as ever for your amazing support!

Ooh! Naval battles are the best! Any chance of WW2 naval battles in the future? Hood vs Bismarck? And u got Drach too! Dream come true!!!

A.G

The animations are amazing

Dan.Gryn

Beautiful! Thank you!

The fact that Britain is actually an Island separated from Europe is the crucial main reason of why Britain has a strong Navy at the time, it was mainly because of its Isolation from most European countries, so if they had a fleet to increase influence around the world it would be the game changer that saved Britain from invasion or blockade, it only started around the late 1600's when they wanted to knock out the Spanish Armada from the seas since they were benefiting from their findings in Latin America and had a strong Navy until it became humiliated when in 1598 it faced Sir Francis Drake's flagship The Golden Hind and its own pirate fleet that became the famous ship to be among the first circumnavigators to explore the entire globe, and when they made victories the mid 1700's it was considered the Seas Greatest Superpower until it was tempered by The American War of Independence, but yeah by the time the French Revolution began and The Napoleonic Wars began as well Britain Learned from its mistakes and won the Napoleonic Wars (went into Stalemate for The French Revolution but was beneficial for the British) likewise I love the video Charles and Toby and I'll be here in case I spot a typo here.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo, at 6:37 the date at which the Battle would've taken place would've been 1797 from here it shows 1796, a year before the battle.

SImon Turner

Beautiful work guys, absolutely brilliant.

Emilo the Great

Amazing quality man! Absolutely amazing! Hope we see an episode with Battle of Copenhagen in 1801!

Gage Hardesty

Similar to this comment I found it at 1:37 as seen from this video

Gage Hardesty

Ok little noteworthy look, Great Britain at this time only had Northern Ireland not the entire Ireland country itself.

Gage Hardesty

A little funny theme is that at 3:51 the name "Jervis" would've been named in our American language "Jarvis" so it's funny but no typo there to let you know

Gage Hardesty

This may be a typo but at 5:18 The ship's name "Minerve" is on the video when in American language it's spelled "Minerva" but if you're using British dictionary then this maybe a right typo for you but a wrong typo for me.

Gage Hardesty

Found a missed Typo, for The name of the Admiral at 8:30 has the full name being "Admiral Don Jose de Córdoba y Ramos" at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent

Alexander Ruspandy

Excellent documentary as always. I'm aware that this series will include Nile and Trafalgar, but just wondering if you will cover his other battles like Copenhagen or Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Gage Hardesty

At 20.5 minutes into the video about Cordoba Ramos getting disgraced reminds me about Marshal Masséna losing his high command abilities from Napoleon after losing the 3rd invasion of Portugal in 1811.

Gage Hardesty

At 21:29 now explains why Napoleon couldn't even invade Great Britain even if he had the chance, it's clear that without the Spanish fleet to help in the invasion, the invasion itself made it impossible for Napoleon to do so, and that led him to instead invade Egypt to capture India from the British.

This was probably one of the best videos you have made on your channel. Coming from someone who has watched your rise and your development, maybe not in entirety, but at least for a decent amount of time, you have done much in your pursuit of recording and displaying historical greatness. High quality, well researched, well written and directed, there is scant a detail I can critique negatively in this video. It captures the essence, as much as likely can be done, of the greatness of what was done in an age long past, and, most times, forgotten. No less, having Drach as a historical advisor on naval matters is one of the best moves you could've ever made. Charles Nove is as impeccable as ever in his narration. Kudos also to all those who labored hard in ensure this video became a reality. Not least to the animators who did an incredible job recreating the ships who crossed swords many centuries ago. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing what comes next from Epic History. Maintaining the same level of flavor, flair, and attention to detail that you've shown thus far.

Gage Hardesty

That's all the typo checking I could find, if there are other typos that I didn't see I'll let others find that one for themselves, but other than that I hope my comments have given you clarity for which of the words are there for you to fix.

"Plans on a Saturday night"? Are you kidding me? My gf can wait, EHTV videos come first 🤣 EDIT: This video was absolutely fantastic. Beautiful story telling and The graphics were amazing! Keep up the amazing work!!

Stuart Carver

Epic History defines what my “plans” are 😂 I think this might be the best video you’ve created and the animation on display is truly breathtaking and opens up so many possibilities after the completion of this series. I never thought I’d see a naval battle brought to life in this way and no other channel has managed to accomplish this as it’s infinitely more difficult than presenting a battle on land. I’d personally love to see you tackle more naval battles in this manner in the future. The obvious one being Jutland since you’ve done a WW1 series and I’d love to see how this animation would translate to a different era of Naval warfare. I have one question not really a mistake. What happened to the 3 Spanish ships that didn’t take part in battle as they aren’t in either Spanish formation. Therefor why would the British lookouts still be able to see 27 ships rather than 24 it’s never explained? Also if you add the guns up of each fleet using your fleet lists The Spanish have 2282 with the full 27 ships and 2060 with 24 while the British have 1232 guns so I think your figure at 8.55 is wrong? Lastly I loved the use of a telescope perspective that you showed in the trailer which you seem to have dispensed with here, care to reconsider or put it to a vote?

Stuart Carver

I think José de Córdoba y Ramos is correct but there is a missing accent on the e of José at 8.30.

CCook

Absolutely amazing stuff! This series promises to be even better than all the Napoleonic battles. Keep up the good work! And Rule Britannia! 🇬🇧

Gage Hardesty

True that is typical for describing foreign names

Hethwill Wargames

Most excellent work team ! The 3d compositions are magnificent and the models very well achieved. Great music tempo and narration. *snappy salute*

notaidan

Hey FYI, I believe you forgot to upload the video to Nebula. Also want to say, these videos from a different perspective than Napoleon's feel really fresh. I do love how the Napoleonic Wars are presented and the series overall, but am also looking forward to how this one will turn out. And hopefully eventually Suvorov's campaigns too! (have to say: slightly disappointed we won't get a full video on the Second Coalition before Brumaire)

Tavana

This was a fantastic video! Thank you so much!

John-Mark Mamalakis

It's really cool seeing these amazing collaborations with other YouTube creators. I really liked this video and look forward to see more like this.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Nebula not forgotten, just a slow upload..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Stuart! I'd love to do some more naval battles after this, Jutland is a good candidate. The 3 missing Spanish ships put into Algeciras (opposite Gibraltar) en route. As to why the lookouts spot 27 ships, it's a widely reported anecdote, so I didn't want to tamper with it. The British assumed they were facing the entire fleet of 27, so either there was a mistake by the lookouts, or more likely, by whoever reported the anecdote. I will look again at the gun count - thank you! Noted on the telescope.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gage! You're right, this is the wrong date, and definitely a typo. Looks like you are getting the prize for the second video in a row!

EpicHistoryTV

I would love to, but I think those two would have difficult technical challenges. The open sea is one thing, but building ports and harbours very tricky..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Anthony! Great to hear, and much appreciated.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, but not a typo. There are varying estimates and we prefer the 800 number.

luc

Always the best !

Sorin Pochtar

Nelson - my hero in my adolescence. Visited Trafalgar square and British Maritime Museum in 2017. Amazing times!

Sergei

"The whale and the elephant superior in their own domain unable to challenge each other" Battle of Austerlitz video

Medin Burnic

Brilliant, absolutely magnificent! Can't wait for this to be uploaded to YouTube. We're just at the start of the series, we still have the Nile and Trafalgar to go!

Jackson Nagy

Getting the popcorn now, this is better than the movies.

Gage Hardesty

I just realized something for the graphics, around 5:34-6:05 you should add like a darkness effect to when Nelson slips past the Main Spanish fleet as well as having lit candles for the Spanish fleet since that'll convince viewers that it actually took place during the night instead of during the day.

thomas griffin

It is a magnificent video and conjured up my favorite Ship of the Line movie and quote: Capt. Jack Aubrey : The first time he spoke to me... I shall never forget his words. I remember it like it was yesterday. He leaned across the table, he looked me straight in the eye, and he said "Aubrey... may I trouble you for the salt?"

Mohammed Alsaadoon

Is there a way to change the video quality in the new player? The video INSISTS on loading at 360p or something and it ruins the whole point of early access to videos.

Gage Hardesty

I think you should also change something for the flag symbol over different Ships, for example HMS Captain when it's covered over with the United Kingdom flag in the top left corner but with just the England symbol in the middle, but by doing my research the flag for Great Britain's Navy has "The British Red Ensign" that should be used for the British Naval flag, just a little idea I had in mind.

Gage Hardesty

🇧🇲, it's something like this flag but without the symbol on the right (tried to find an exact version of this kind of flag but couldn't as it wasn't presented in the flags typing option)

Sean Mac

Looking through the comment I didn't see anyone point it out but the either the number and script at 2:51 are wrong or the graphic is wrong. The graphic depicts 143 ships 35 full rows of 4 and one row of three as apposed to 36 full rows that would be 144 ships Also at 4:51 the Combined Fleet graphic has 25 Spanish Ships rather than the 27 stated earlier as the figure for the Spanish fleet Also might be worth clarifying how Nelson transferred from Minerve to Captain

Nick Savage

Love learning about Lord Nelson. I look forward to seeing this series continue. I love this style of video where we follow one person through their battles. Also love the use of 3d assets alongside the battle map. Really cool way to present naval battles

EpicHistoryTV

Sorry to hear about that. The video is uploaded at 1080p. Assuming you've checked obvious things such as your connection, clearing cookies and trying a different browser/browser mode, you will need to contact Patreon for technical support: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us

EpicHistoryTV

That's not quite right. At this time, the Royal Navy used the white, red and blue ensigns, and the Union Jack (and various pennants) on different masts and flag staffs, depending on the rank of the ship's commander, and the squadron or fleet commander.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Sean, good spot on the dots, we were four short for the British. We'll get that fixed. The Combined Fleet totals are speculative, so I'm happy with that showing 25. Three Spanish ships had detached before the battle so we're really guessing at final numbers. A sea transfer from Minerve to Captain was a simple enough operation by ship's boat. See our HMS Victory video for more info on that!

Gage Hardesty

Oh, it's just I had to confirm something before trying to deal with it

Gage Hardesty

I just noticed something, at 1:49 when you mentioned that French Forces were moving towards Austria (mentioned in the Rivoli video for Napoleon) I think Italy didn't have the Cisalpine Republic at the time as before they advanced on Austria it was mostly just a jumble of different Republics for example, the Lombardic Republic, Cispadene Republic, and the Venetian Republic of Venice that wasn't occupied by Napoleon and the French until after the Treaty of Campo Formio just saying (also known from the Rivoli video).

Gage Hardesty

Plus, the French had occupied Romanqa from the Pope at the time as well.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

ben bellamy

Fantastic as always! Brilliant content, please never stop.

Jason

Imagining the ships in port. It's so many sailors...

Sean Mac

awwww that doesn't qualify for merch unfortunate. That reasoning made sense I just wanted to make sure sense I spotted the issue with the British number. Also sorry I wasn't clear but I meant in the command arrangements. The way the video is presented it at least in my mind made it sound like Nelson was reassigned from a frigate to a Ship of the line while at Sea which seemed fairly unusual to me. after a little digging I found out that Nelson was already given command of that ship before and he was detached with Minerve for other duties regarding the British withdrawal from the Med . I think it might be possible to add a little more clarity to that section. perhaps mentioning that Captian was Nelson's De Jure command when you initially bring up the Minerve's voyage at around 5:30. could also possibly work to add a bit of tension.

Killerbin

I have to ask, what is the soundtrack for Jervis's ''I will go through them!'' scene ?

EpicHistoryTV

That one is called Siege the Fort by Ben Hayden - one of our own!

Jônatas Pereira

Superb quality, signed up on patreon just for Nelson

Michael Smith

Wow. My name got at shout-out at the end credits. Thanks, Epic History TV.

David Probert

Truly amazing epic tv I love you lots 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💜🙏

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you for the heroic levels of support, Michael!

Gage Hardesty

I just took a notice at the Ships during the Battle of Cape St. Vincent and noticed that none had any "rocking" on the Ships, I'm only saying this now because in such circumstances boats always rock around in the ocean currents all the time so that makes it a bit confusing because the ship from the video normally straight without any rocking on the Ships themselves in case you needed to know about that.

Gage Hardesty

Not that it causes any issues but it's something to be noteworthy about.

Sam Downes

Tried to wait for this video to come out but couldn't wait anymore

Nick Nothhelfer

Are the videos no longer to be posted on YouTube after a few weeks?

EpicHistoryTV

They are, we're just holding back Cape St Vincent for a bit, we may be able to make a few further improvements before we release it.

Shaun Scandrett

Great video and I look forward to further additions in this new series!

Chris Goodall

When Charles says the word “dominates” you know you’re dealing with a master narrator

Nathan Crawshaw

Fantastic episode but Is this not coming to YouTube anymore?

EpicHistoryTV

It will be, but we're waiting until the full series is closer to completion.

TankerBricks

I recall, that Admiral Cordova was ready to surrender Santisma Trinidad, but the Captain of one of the Spanish ships that came to their aid threated the Santisma Trinidad with being treated as a enemy ship and raked, the flag was promptly hauled back up. ..
