Dear Patrons,

I'm delighted to share the world premiere of the Battle of the Nile!

This is the second episode in our Nelson's Battles series, and covers Nelson's attack on the French fleet as it lay at anchor in Aboukir Bay, on the evening of 1 August 1798. It was a daring plan... with explosive results.

I hope you enjoy the video - and thank you for making it possible through your support here on Patreon. Thank you also to Drachinifel for research assistance, and David of DC Interactive for the 3D magic.

Typos for Merch is in effect - let us know here in the comments if you spot any mistakes!

Our final episode in this series will cover the Battle of Trafalgar, but that's still several weeks away. Closer to hand - the Complete History of Venice - which will have its Patreon premiere later this month.

Thank you for supporting the channel - more updates and premieres soon!

Found a typo at 1:28 Nelson actually would've been a Viscount in 1786 so unless you got the name wrong or the date wrong is your answer but you do you pick your winner who had the best founded typo rather than the first one to find it.

Tristan Breslin

Breathtaking 3D visuals! They look great

TankerBricks

Good video! Beautiful animation of the ships!

Gage Hardesty

Wait at 21:23 didn't you use that quote for the Battle of the Pyramids? Because I swear it looked the same.

Gage Hardesty

Also beginning music didn't you have that music differently for the Battle of Cape St. Vincent because if so then you may need to change that.

Medin Burnic

Holy cow. This video is majestic in its graphical fidelity and recreation of the battle. Great work here - this truly conveys the slaughter and devastation the battle truly was, more than any other channel could convey. I had chills my entire time watching this episode, especially during the lead up to the explosion of L'Orient. I can't imagine the horrors of cannonballs breaking through wood, causing splinters and constant fire. Honestly, it just makes me so much more curious in alternative history. What if all the French crew was there? What if Nelson died? Wonderful animation. Looking forward to seeing Bonaparte in Italy once more!

EpicHistoryTV

Nelson was made a viscount in 1801 after Copenhagen.

Sam Downes

Been waiting all week for this and it didn't fail to impress

Gage Hardesty

Really because to me I had to look up what position Nelson was in 1786 and all it confirmed was that Nelson was a Viscount but if that was overall then I guess it wouldn't be a typo but what about the date

c_green

Fantastic. Portugal was a member of the Second Coalition from the start though!

Will Chadwick

The graphics and animations are gorgeous and very technically impressive - I can only imagine how much work it all took. And great soundtrack as ever. Superb!

DC*

Wow. These naval episodes have been amazing

Connor Hilchie

Crazy to think how much changed with this one battle. Britain gets sea domination in the Mediterranean, Napleon's Egypt adventure becomes a bust and he returns to France without marching on India like he had wanted. These two moments alone are massive crossroads events that changed the course of our history.

Kevin Xu

Is there a sunken treasure of the L’Orient? What happened to all the treasury after the battle?

Blake

Aye I got a call out! Cool stuff, love your videos... I guess I forgot to add my last name to my account, I should probably do that... Another great video!

EpicHistoryTV

In fact, there was some underwater archaeology in Aboukir Bay around 2003, and they found various coins scattered over the seabed, along with debris.

Mango

Great video! I believe there is a letter Q mistakenly in the centre of the video at 20:45, you can see it reflected in the ship's flag in the centre of the shot for a few seconds and then on the blackened ship shortly after.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! You're first to spot this mistake - we'll be in touch about your prize!

Gage Hardesty

That's all the typos I could see at least I must say that was an astonishing if not brutal moment of watching L'Orient get exploded I must say that when Nelson tried to rescue the survivors of L'Orient I was thinking then, "Even in war they are still human not monsters so I highly respect Nelson rescuing the survivors".

Sergei

Love the graphics like watching a movie

Richard Fernandes

Great Video with QUALITY as ever. Regarding the typos, I think it has to do regarding the Years between The Battle of Nile and Trafalgar: You said 6 years, but if We do the math: 1798 to 1805 = 7 Years.

TankerBricks

Did a bit more looking into the Battle of Nile and HMS Culloden was eventually freed from the shoals but it took a while, most of the French captains were coming back from the conference on L'Orient and hence surprised, but within a few hours most of them would be either wounded or dead, among them admiral Blanquet.

Juan Manuel van der Zee

Another great one! Although i have been rooting for Napoleon since i started watching your channel, there is no doubt that this superbly executed plan by Nelson made for a deserved victory for the British! Thanks Toby & the rest of the team for making amazing content!

TankerBricks

Also a good video to watch while ironically building a Napoleonic Fleet... French of course...

Gage Hardesty

I think it's fair to note that Great Britain didn't have Ireland until 1800 with the passing of the act of union in 1800 which made it the United Kingdom so small graphic error would be Britain having Ireland as an annexed region but because it was under British rule in government I'd put Ireland as an ally not connected to Great Britain

Mango

Great, thank you! I trust this counts for the mistake for merch scheme :)

Bardhyl Salihu

As always, a brilliant documentary in terms of storytelling, narration, animation. You are the best and please keep it coming!

Justin Bailey

Your work is top notch, as always. Thank you for your excellent retellings of incredible history.

CCook

Excellent video!!! The graphics are just amazing. Just noticed this but the french tricolor flag hoisted from L'Orient is correctly oriented, but I noticed in the other French ships that the flag is flipped. Not sure if this is correct but thought I'd note it.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

This masterpiece has topped the peaks of the woah factor! Literally felt as if I we're in a row boat with Popcorn lol. Must say Brueys met an awful yet very Charismatic end, If the wounds to His face & hands we're not enough. A solid round shot takes His legs, damn. Only to rise like a Phoenix when L'Orient detonated in a thunderous fiery accession towards the night sky, Again the wow & woah factor on point 💚 Rather stoked for Trafalgar! To be honest I shed a tear for Brueys certain a few will fall for Nelson. To Toby & Team thanks abunch!!!!!!! Your telling the stories of History beautifully. Sincerely Lord John 💚⚔️🇭🇺🇩🇪

nickel

one cool story from the battle of nile is that the mast from the Orient was used to make Nelson’s casket - he was given it as a gift for the victory. love your videos - thank you thank you.

Andrew Herbst

Absolutely amazing video!!!! Watched it twice so far, love the content and the graphics are stunning! Great work Toby, et al!

EpicHistoryTV

Good spot, we'll get this fixed, thank you Richard!

EpicHistoryTV

That's not quite right - the King of Ireland was George III, and though it had its own parliament until the Act of Union, it was not in any meaningful way independent.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes I had missed a few of those backwards tricolors! Hopefully we can get them fixed.

Hethwill Wargames

Great production again and retains all the essentials to understand the battle.

Hethwill Wargames

typo/oddities - 18:25 aprox, there's a Q fading in and out in the center

Cat Linh Nguyen

I love your history channels. It makes me happy to watch them every day. Thank you.

EpicHistoryTV

Trafalgar. The series is our pick of the 'top 3'.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Just curious since We're discussing Naval engagements. How did the battle of Camperdown turn out? not expecting a vid Copenhagen would have been difficult to recreate so totally understand that Camperdown would also be difficult, but just curious. Idk if I'm correct but in that battle Englands enemy was the Dutch, Something about them being neutral & the English didn't want Napoleon to have access to their ships of the line? The raid was comparable to the ww2 raid of Taranto, Take a neutral fleet before said fleet is used against You in turn. Correct Me please if I'm wrong. Best regards Lord John 💚⚔️🇩🇪🇭🇺

Mathew T

Wow! Absolutely phenomenal visualization!

EpicHistoryTV

I think you maybe mixing up Camperdown - a British naval victory over the Dutch - with the Battles of Copenhagen, in 1801, and 1807, which were attacks to pre-empt a Franco-Danish alliance. No time to go into more details here unfortunately, we're focused on the next video!

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Appreciate the correction was just curious lol Thank You Toby 😄 & that is fantastic news! Super stoked for the next! Naval engagements weren't always a keen interest land armies always drew the attention, But Your works on Naval Warfare has earned real estate in My noggen lol!

Loyal Piper

At camperdown the Dutch fleet were attempting to link up with the French and Spanish to invade England and were intercepted by a British fleet.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

So a race basically thank You both for explaining sincerely appreciate it!!!! Love being part of this community You all are phenomenal People! Lord John 💚

MarbleHit

This is reaching movie levels! Amazing work, i cant wait until Trafalgar!

Stuart Carver

Awesome video I can’t definitively see the step up from Cape St. Vincent, far more affects here and such a sense of foreboding before L’orient explodes. Wouldn’t The Revolutionary Wars in 1798 already be 6 years old so be in their 7th year? Also at 16.20 why is Conquérant still shown as firing? Wouldn’t she have already surrendered by then?

Floris Rozema

Amazing visualisations, truly taking it to the next level!

TankerBricks

Definitely a good video! Revolutionary wars started in 1792, 6 years is 1798 7th is 1799, and so on until 1803 and the peace of Amien.

Stuart Carver

Yes but it would have entered the 7th year as in if you are born in 2000 in 2024 you’re 24, but you’re in your 25th year that’s what I mean.

EpicHistoryTV

Well, as the Rev Wars started in April 1792, we would still be in the 6th year until April 1798. And as we don't say in which month the video starts, it's Schroedinger's year - it could be 6th or 7th, and everyone is right!

Stuart Carver

Schroedinger’s now there’s a reference I wasn’t expecting 😂

TankerBricks

Oh yeah. That makes sense lol.

TankerBricks

According to looking at Wikipedia and French sources, 5 captains and 1 Vice Admiral were killed, 3 WIA, the rest I'm not sure about, one British Captain was killed, but that's about it.

Stuart Carver

I think same is true at 18.10 as well as Guerrier and Spartiate

Stuart Carver

Also When you list the fleets at the beginning before the battle and at the end to show the losses the number of guns are different for 3 French ships? I assume 80 is correct as that’s the number used during the battle when describing what happened to Tonnant for example.

TankerBricks

I think a few of the French ships had 80 guns- only Franklin and Tonnant and Guillaume Tell. The rest had 74 guns and Orient had 120.

TankerBricks

Add 4 guns for the Obusiers and it's 84. Entirely correct!

Stuart Carver

I’m sure it’s right but you’d have to choose with or without obusiers for consistency looks odd saying 80 guns one moment then 84 the next. It’s like Carronades sometimes are or aren’t included in the final number I suppose.

TankerBricks

Indeed! I'd probably go with 80 guns- make it simple...

TankerBricks

Also another typo ISH thing- when the map turns red at 24.40 Sardinia isn't in red! She ought to be red because she was part of the war of the 2nd Coalition.

Stuart Carver

At 15.46 HMS Bellerophon is shown without her Mizzenmast but mainmast intact, however the very next shot shows her mainmast being destroyed whilst her mizzenmast is shown as intact???

Gage Hardesty

Wait at 4:49 did Nelson really figure out that the French were at Alexandria? Because in the Battle of the Pyramids video Nelson didn't know the French Fleet was at Aboukir until he saw the French fleet stationed at Aboukir Bay.

Dan.Gryn

Thank you! Amazing work. the animations are extraordinary.

EpicHistoryTV

I think we've been inconsistent about this in the past - but I'm inclined to leave it as it is. Sardinia is often listed as a member of the Second Coalition, but I can find no evidence that she was - Piedmont itself was occupied by the French, the king went into exile on Sardinia, but I've never been able to find reference to Sardinian involvement in the coalition war - although certainly the exiled king was very hostile to Republican France! Happy to change my mind if a solid source is provided.

EpicHistoryTV

(we could only afford one mast destruction shot - pretend you didn't notice..)

Enzo

Its crazy how influential this battle is - the firm I work at is named after Nelson's flagship.

Rodrigo Palacios

This video was a masterpiece with the play by play and animations. I look forward to seeing more content like this. Amazing work!

TankerBricks

Is this for all the mast destruction scenes?

Harvest

awesome video, great creation !! I now look forward to see battle Cape Trafalgar

Sam Owens

When you show the losses near the end of the vid, you can still see Villeneuve's nameplate faint in the background :)

EpicHistoryTV

Very good spot! Thank you! We'll get that fixed.

Gage Hardesty

Found a saying problem long later I realized at the end Charles said that the Battle that made Nelson forever linked which is Trafalgar would be fought 6 years later after the Battle of the Nile which is incorrect because the Battle of the Nile took place in year 1798 and then Trafalgar happened in 1805 which is 7 years later so that is a saying typo.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gage! Amazing no one spotted this before.. Fixed now.

Gage Hardesty

Yeah I was surprised I assumed someone may have already found it but NOPE guess everyone missed that and I came in clutch to figure that one out.

Matt williamson

could you make a video about Glorious First of June.

EpicHistoryTV

Trafalgar next. I'd like to do more naval battles in due course.. perhaps Glorious First will be among them.
