Dear Patrons,

We are very pleased to share the world premiere of our long-awaited 'Voices of the Peninsular War'.

This video features eyewitness accounts from more than a dozen participants - Spanish, French, British, Polish and German. The 'viewer discretion' warning on the front is no joke - there is some grim and graphic testimony in this video (plus plenty of Goya!) so be prepared...

Many thank to all the voices, researchers and others involved in making this video, and we're very interested to get your feedback on it. Keen-eyed observers will notice that we used some AI imagery in this episode - but I hope you will agree that it is used creatively, and only to complement a huge amount of 'real' art! Despite my own qualms about the current state of the technology, it's not something we can afford to ignore entirely, and indeed, is very helpful in limited situations.

Typos for Merch is in effect - usual rules apply.

Thanks for supporting the channel, and I hope you enjoy the video!

Toby

Grama Ionut

16:40 - Is'nt marshal Massena leading the retreat from Portugal?

Grama Ionut

Long live Epic History TV!

TankerBricks

Very nice! Excellent video for certain. Be nice to see the rest of the Napoleonic campaigns from the perspective of the ordinary soldier!

TankerBricks

16:47, Charles says "Marshal Marmont's retreat from Portugal" shouldn't that be Marshal Masséna's retreat from Portugal?

EpicHistoryTV

Yes indeed, as already spotted by Grama. We'll get that fixed.

TankerBricks

Delving into the Campaigns in Eastern Spain, Suchet conducted a brilliant campaign, ensuring the surrender of Valencia, can't remember the website name- I'll post it later, it delves deeper into the siege of Valencia.

teamr

I just started reading "Voices from the Napoleonic Wars" by Jon E. Lewis so this is excellent timing!

Dan.Gryn

Extraordinary!! Thank you.

Gage Hardesty

Um found a typo at 27:38 isn't the Battle supposed to be Toulouse not Toulon because Toulon was southeast France away from Wellington.

Gage Hardesty

I must say it wasn't as great as Marengo but it's a good documentary especially when you truly inputed the accents in the documentary I was left a little stunned by the documentary especially at the one in Vittoria where there was that one French soldier who said "Don't leave me for the Spanish Guerillias" and watched as the soldier mentioned please at least leave me something and he did to which I'm thinking that's sorrowful but at the same time humanizing because it shows that while although at the time the French were the enemy they weren't all dehumanizing especially that one moment and to be fair I can agree on one thing Wars are truly terrible and while although some who fight in the military do die eventually it goes to show that while although they had no choice to fight each other it does give you the clarity of how being humanizing to others can affect your moral standard for the one soldier who retreated in Masséna's army was right about one thing, it's not the commanders who are to blame, but the political leaders who are to blame. To be specific: Look at the Russian-Ukraine War from 2022- the present day many Russians are dying at the Ukrainian homeland because Putin the political leader of Russia forced those soldiers to fight against the Ukrainians when they truly surrendered to the Ukrainians at least they weren't at the time dehumanizing them because it's like I said the soldiers aren't all bad it's the political leaders for whichever faction you support are the bad guys in this situation.

Jonathan Jung

Shout out to Captain Blakiston for not giving up the name of the looting officer!

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at Seville which has an a in the last letter but it might be because autocorrect had turned the word into Sevilla so I could see how that works.

Gage Hardesty

Also Figueres has an "e" not an a in "res"

Victor Deleon

Beautiful work. It’s phenomenal to hear these voices of people from days gone by, during such tumultuous period. Thank you, as always.

Christian Gundersen

Excellent video documentation as always 😊 I found many of the stories from the time, to be quite gripping. So i really hope you guys will do more of these videos in the future 😊

Gage Hardesty

At 26:25 didn't Charles originally say in the Battle of Vitoria video that the one British officer say "They" not there?

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 27:28 the Battle of the Pyrenees actually took place on the 25th of July not the 28th.

Gage Hardesty

Found a typo at 14:06 the British actually sailed from Corunna around the 14th of January not the 16th because the Battle of Corunna was on the 11th of January.

Gage Hardesty

Sorry just getting a little annoyed is all I've seen it so much that I was cool with it when it's the French Revolutionary Wars but when it's the Napoleonic Wars it's the United Kingdom but if you care about the name then suit yourself just don't get me wrong if I am not speaking the truth here

Gage Hardesty

But seriously I like the video it's just the name that has put me on edge and maybe you don't appreciate it which I respect but at least I'm not wrong I mean anyone can make a mistake I'm just a little annoyed is all.

Gage Hardesty

It's just I really don't mind what it should be after all a lot of people can use United Kingdom as like UK or Great Britain or Britain or anything in general it's just I like the terminology for The United Kingdom because if others were reacting to it on YouTube and lot would disagree on the name and maybe you would agree on the name Britain but I don't because for a modern historical audience it would be the United Kingdom

luc

At the end it's the battle of Toulouse and not Toulon ! Apart this little mistake everything is perfect as usual ;-)

Stuart Carver

Brilliant so see The Peninsula War brought as close to reality as possible, compulsive viewing. Toby as one of the voices, I saw that in the credits. 😉 Now to guess who 🤔 it’s like watching a Hitchcock film looking for the cameo 😂 I’d say you’re George Wood??? Reckon william Lawrence and Harris are the same actor then all the other English accents are one person. 2 for Scottish, 2 for french? Then not sure must be some overlap with spanish, German and French. Close?

Medin Burnic

Excellent work! Seeing these accounts with such phenomenal voice acting truly conveys the anguish and suffering from soldiers during this war more than ever - the parts of storming breaches and the guerilla warfare left me much shaken. I would love to see more of these videos in the future. The use of AI Art was done perfectly, I couldn't even notice. I don't mind seeing its continued use in the future videos.

Gage Hardesty

At 21:13 did you mean to put well-tried or well-trained soldiers?

Medin Burnic

The Battle of the Pyrenees was a series of several engagements - but the main fighting happened on the 28th.

TankerBricks

At 5:46 wasn't Denmark at war with Great Britain after the attack on Copenhagen in 1807? (Or at least a French Ally)

TankerBricks

At the section about Partisan attacks on French Messengers is that the Captain Marbot who wrote memoirs about his time in the Army?

Stuart Walker

Fascinating and sobering video. It’s very exciting following all the battles, tactics and strategies but it is sometimes easy to forget that the reality was a nightmare. Ordinary people with all the same hopes and desires as we have, thrown into fear and chaos by war. Great work bringing that reality to life for us.

EpicHistoryTV

Britain was at war with Denmark-Norway, yes. I'm not sure if there was a formal alliance with France - but I will have another look at that map.

Sean Hogerheide

Another fantastic video! It really adds depth to your already existing videos of the Napoleonic Wars in Spain.

TankerBricks

The website is Napoleon-series.org, good website for certain!

Lewis C

absolutely incredible

Lewis C

damn look at the detail on that map

Lewis C

The voice actor 19:00 amazing

Stuart Carver

Does say tried, not easy to tell if you aren’t used to a Scot’s accent though 🙂

Stuart Carver

I mean you were quite obvious, nice acting though. You’re driving your rival channels furiously before you until they’re completely routed 😉

Line_of_Blood

After watching this, This make me want a compilation video of the Spanish Campaign!

TankerBricks

In Colonel Noel's section it's interesting he blames Napoleon not Masséna, which I partially agree with, Napoleon failed to supply the troops in Spain, Masséna for his part was simply not the man of '95-'99 of even 1809 at Aspern and Wagram, even during the retreat from Portugal Marshal Ney conducted a brilliant rearguard at Pombal and Redinha among other places, until relieved by Masséna, a mistake in my opinion.

TankerBricks

Thanks. Wasn't entirely sure. Nice touch by EHTV to include him!

Hethwill Wargames

What an excellent video. My compliments to the voice over team that, despite a couple slips on the accents, did a phenomenal job in giving the right ambiance.

Stuart Carver

Shouldn’t your YouTube thumbnail say 1808-1814 not 1813?

EpicHistoryTV

It was initially to represent the years we have testimony from, but you're right, it's a little confusing, so we've changed it!

Marc Baudouin

It has to be said English troops were in a very favorable environment in Spain and against not the elite soldiers of France who lacked everything. This was Napoleon’s mistake to start with The true vilain in this whole story are the British though. They tried everything to defeat France by any means and creating coalition after coalition to make it become a monarchy again All these conflicts on all sides was too much with time passing by.

EpicHistoryTV

Hmm I'm not sure Wellington would have agreed! The British army in Spain and Portugal was small, inexperienced and under-supplied, and at the end of extremely long supply lines over the sea back to England. And it relied on an Anglo-Spanish alliance that was fraught with difficulties and mistrust. Conditions were perhaps even worse for French troops in Spain, but nevertheless, most historians would not call the British situation 'very favourable'.

Marc Baudouin

Granted. The « very favourable » maybe not. Wrong statement by me But they had the intel they had even if relations were not great 2 Allies + population in general. The conclusion is this invasion was indeed Napoleon’s blunder

Marc Baudouin

Will we have an episode on the imperial guard someday ? Would be so amazing with your editing, your music and your narration Would be my Christmas gift and for many others too I think ❤️

Marc Baudouin

Video was amazing though as always We love you epic history and we love the Napoleonic era

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed - the only people for whom the conditions were worse, were the French!

Arben Kikaj

Excellent documentary! “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”I never fully supported this because I think there can be so many valid interpretations of historical accounts, and as many conclusions on how, if at all, a past event should be considered when judging our future course. What you take away from history and how you apply it to current events will often depend on your own preexisting worldview. But one thing I can always be sure: war is disaster. For all involved. And work like this really hammer that home. When responsibility becomes hard to define this is when atrocities become commonplace. Those who perpetuate war can never be great men!

nothing is more apparent in that when you watch the battle of Eylau and Waterloo side by side. the movements, turns of fortune and overall outcomes for either side are scarily similar.

Would love to hopefully see one day, This same glorius idea utilized in other Wars & Conflicts. Just think how awesome it could be, Voices Of WW1 Voices Of WW2 Voices Of The Napoleonic Wars . Voices Of The American Revolution could literally make a Voices Of War Series. Oh the possibilities 💚🤓🙏🏼 Could give many a detailed insight to so many engagements & battles. & The "Epic" Gents who fought them, From Emperor's to Conscripts.
