Dear Patrons,

We're delighted to bring you our latest premiere - the Battle of Valmy!

In this episode we dive into the tumult of the French Revolution, and explore the momentous battle upon which its future depended. Keen readers of credits will spot that we are welcoming another Macartney-Filgate onto the team! Christopher is the younger brother of Patrick of PMF fame, proving that this is not only a very talented family, but one with a profound passion for musket-era warfare!

-- Before we leave you to enjoy the video, a quick 'Public Service Announcement' regarding Patron payments...

As newsletter readers will know, we've got a lot of new videos premiering on Patreon over the next two months: two new videos in May, three in June.

While this is undoubtedly fantastic and exciting news, we thought it worth quickly reminding all our Patrons that you are billed per video, and not per month.

BUT - if you have any concern that our sudden burst of industry will leave you out of pocket - Patreon allows every supporter to set up a 'monthly max', which means you can still get access to all our new videos, but only be charged up to your monthly max amount.

You can find out how to set this up here: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115002984506-How-do-I-set-a-monthly-max-for-my-membership.

Of course, there is no charge in any month that we don't release a video, and three videos in one month is still going to be a very rare occurrence.. so we hope you'll keep this in mind if you're setting up a 'monthly max' ;)

We hope that's been helpful for anyone who is unfamiliar with Patreon's payment system.

Thanks as always for your tremendous support. Enjoy Valmy, and we'll be back with the next instalment in our Rise of China series soon.

Toby

An excellent opening I think! I'll have to wait till work is over, but it'll be an excellent watch for sure!

teamr

Almost fell on my face running to the kitchen to get some popcorn!

Andrew Herbst

Thank you for the PSA but it is worth supporting each video if you are able to keep producing such great content!

Hugo

I was reading liberty or death by Peter Mc Phee recently and it was thus extra exciting to see this video announced! Maybe a bit of a silly question, but will you also do a full French Revolution series? Or is this the first instalment of said series?

EpicHistoryTV

Hmm - I'd love to, it's one of my favourite topics in all history - but it's extremely tricky to illustrate in a dramatic and engaging way. I think that's why you don't see many great depictions of it. But maybe one day...

Jon Molden

I’m so excited! I needed this today! Best historical content of all time right here boys!! ❤️

Hugo

I can definitely see how that could be an issue. If anyone can pull it off it’s epic history though!

Jon Molden

That’s what y’all do best though. I’m certain you would find a way to make it engaging.

Jon Molden

That’s a great book! Have you ever read the Oxford history of the French Revolution by William Doyle? It’s great. I think it was first printed in 1989 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille.

Hugo

I liked it yes! I read a couple more popular history books on the French Revolution and wanted something of a little more substance, so definitely got what I wished for with Mc Phee. And I didn’t know that book, but thanks for the tip! Will add it to my reading list.

Michael McDaniel

I can’t believe it how long i wanted you to make a video about valmy amazing the best channel

Ahran Ghani Majid

Wanna talk about Marengo being overhyped? Gosh I expected some big great battle. Also audibly laughed hearing Brunswick being called Europe’s greatest general at the time, boy did they have no idea what they were in for.

Hunter Cihal

I can no idea Valmy had Louis Philipe AND Goethe present. History makes the world seem so small sometimes. What an awesome episode.

Stuart Carver

Not Marching on Paris was a fatal error, The sixth Coalition would learn from that mistake.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

This is spectacular! With as always an amazing music score to follow suit. Honestly would like to see the battles & events that didn’t involve the rising star who is also taking center stage & seeking real estate in Europe like that of the revolution. The art used so beautiful! Toby & Team sincerest thanks! I absolutely cherish & love this Channel 💚 best regards Lord John btw a stand alone episode on Zurich would be lovely for the future 🤞🏼 so many battles & events the possibilities are endless & so are the limits of this beautiful & glorious channel. 💪🏼💚

SImon Turner

Fantastic as always guys. I wonder if at some point way down the line if you'll do a video on the Bourbon Restoration up to 1830 after Napoleon's defeat?

Medin Burnic

Another masterpiece delivered by Epic History! Phenomenal work as always! The insight into the political factions of the French Revolution at the start was very useful and detailed! I'm very glad to see the ranks of the Epic History team grow once more! Welcome, Christopher! - Excellent work on this episode! 🎉

Stuart Walker

Really enjoyed this one. The battle/cannonade is a bit anticlimactic when you read about it but the writing, narration, artwork, music, editing and all the other factors made it truly exciting. Great work.

CrazyLizard!!!

This is now my favourite EH video by miles.

Alex Lee

This is awesome. I've always wanted to see more from your creative depictions of the Napoleonic Prequel era haha. Will you all be doing more on the French Revolution and war against the First Coalition?

TankerBricks

Having watched it I can say, that was a turning point in the French Revolution if only Brunswick had been more aggressive at Valmy then maybe history might of taken a different course...

Mohammed Alsaadoon

When you hear Napolean describe this battle and Kellerman's heroics, you get the idea it was an Austerlitz tier victory 😅

Robert Rei

By chance i just saw Middle Guard's video on the battle of Valmy a few days ago. The script of your video is very similar, down to quoting or paraphrasing his video at many points. Sure there are bound to be similarities when depicting the same events but that was bit too much. I don't know if you copied his video or just used the same sources but for that reason i was somewhat disappointed to not see a different perspective or (much) new information. Your video is of higher quality though which makes it more enjoyable to watch.

Cuirassier

I believe this was done in collaboration with Middle Guard - in fact MG announced on their YouTube channel today to keep a look out at EH Patreon for this video

Robert Rei

Okay thanks for pointing that out. It does seem like MG is now working under the EH team from his most recent post

Graf von Kielmansegg

It's very kind and fair of you to mention the monthly max — but as for me; if you're creating that many awesome videos, you totally deserve our support for every single one!

Udel-jury

Haha. I'd already heard about the battle and expected much more than what happened. But again, a very well-done video.

Bardhyl Salihu

Excellent as always! I’d love to wrap up Napoleon and focus more on the American Revolution. I watched that last documentary thrice. 😆

CrazyLizard!!!

I also liked how bemused Charles Nove sounded at my username.

Eli Khanam

The battle itself wasn't that complicated or drawn out, but the impact of it changed French and European history.

Walide

Symbolically it was crucial. For the first time an army largely composed by engaged citizens won or did not loose against what was considered the best infantry in Europe.

John Dominguez

Wow, I didnt know about the Polish crisis distracting the eastern powers in the beginning. Thanks for a great video!

TankerBricks

The Army of Conde, fought with the Austrians until 1797, then the Russians seeing action under Surovov in his 1799 Italian Campaign, then in British pay before being disbanded in 1801 having never seeing the restoration of the monarchy.

Alexander Ruspandy

Thanks for such a great video about the battle that sparked the French Republic. Considering there will be a new papal election this week, maybe in future you could do a video about the papacy during Napoleonic Wars, particularly Pius VII's relationship with Napoleon.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Ali! Interesting points. I am happy to agree that our coverage of the French Revolution was a little superficial and simplistic. As you clearly get, our aim was really just to provide the context for Valmy. But I'm not sure I completely agree with your assessment.. Feudalism isn't a term we used in the video, but I don't think the corvée and other feudal obligations were completely dead by 1789.... alas, I will have to leave debating the origins of the Revolution for another day!

noctorious

Great video as ever. I was a bit surprised to see that Lazare Carnot wasn't mentioned, as he's responsible for the Leveé en Masse? In fairness, I suppose you have to be cautious with introducing too many names. Also, Robespierre was against war - unusually pacifistic!

Will Chadwick

Excellent as ever! I especially liked the new music at 03:40 or so - is this Beethoven's symphony 7.2-inspired...?

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Carnot and the levée came a bit later, in 1793, responding to yet another military crisis!

noctorious

And that's why you're making the video!

Marc Baudouin

That first music gave me chills!! What Is it ? I hope Spielberg watches your videos for his HBO Napoleon series coming in 2026 for the details and even music. Amazing work!

EpicHistoryTV

The opening track is Reminiscence by Seb Jaeger - it's one from Filmstro!

Geraint Thatcher

Great video. Please cover the 1793 to 95 Flanders Campaign where Wellington learned what not to do
