Dear Patrons,

Welcome to our latest newsletter, with production updates, merch news, and your chance to tell us what you think about AI in history videos! Let's get straight into the updates.

Production updates

American Revolution Part 4

After a short break for summer vacations, the next part of our American Revolution series is well underway. With Britain now threatening all-out war, Patriot forces make a pre-emptive strike against Canada - with not very many men... and just before winter... but hoping to be greeted as liberators from tyrannical British rule. Find out how that goes, plus the conclusion of the Siege of Boston, a British strike in the south, and deliberations over a declaration of independence....

Expect this one on Patreon at the end of October.

Road to WW2: 1935-36

Production for the next episode of our World War Two series is also underway. The future Axis powers are becoming bolder and more extreme in their domestic and foreign policies, with Nazi Germany passing new race laws, Italy launching a war of conquest in Africa, Japan continuing its attack on China, while Spain descends into bloody civil war. This will be an early October release.

Thirty Years War with Europa Universalis 5 (Patreon poll result)

Last month, Patron Citizens voted for the topic of our upcoming collaboration with Europa Universalis 5. 'The Thirty Years War' was an easy winner, so now we're taking on the thing I've deliberately avoided for ten years - making a map of the Holy Roman Empire!

Production is now underway, and this will be another October release.

Verdun in 3D

Another topic voted for by Patrons, this video has - like the battle itself - taken on a life of its own, and expanded into a two-parter. The idea for this series is to use 3D graphics to convey the importance of topography. It's VERY early days, but these sneak peeks will give you a sense of what we're planning. We're aiming for a December release for this one.

Battle of Copenhagen

Another major 3D project is in the works.. the long awaited continuation of our Nelson's Battles in 3D series. This time Nelson is taking on the Danes in the harbour of their own capital. No 3D shots to share yet but we've been hard at work with research, writing and storyboarding...

New Epic History merch store

We're delighted to announce that we have a new merch supplier, a new shop, and brand new merch!

We started looking at new supply partners after becoming aware of some issues with stock availability and deliveries. We hope that the new partner will now give our loyal supporters a superior experience whenever they choose to buy merch.

Even better, we've some great new items in the store, including framed posters, desk mats, mouse pads, and more to come.

And, of course, any existing Patreon discount codes have been carried over to the new store.

Alexander the Great speech - in AI?

Needless to say, AI remains the hot topic in the creator and YouTuber world. As we've already shared publicly, we use a small number of AI tools to augment our work, but are clear that humans remain in control of all research, writing, narration and animation.

This is not the place to rehash all the arguments for and against AI. But I want to quickly gauge the mood of our favourite channel supporters. We're contemplating a reboot of our viral Alexander the Great speech video - with new AI animations... Here's a few early test shots in two contrasting styles. Let us know your gut reaction using the voting options below!

That's all for this newsletter - thanks agains for supporting our work - more updates soon!

For the Alexander Part: Definitely a No from me. I prefer the original. I’m not even that against AI, but these just look awful I’m sorry 😭. What are they tryna make him a Mall Roman?

Anderson Rochford

The use of AI for this really depends. Y’all have the highest, and most consistent production quality that I’ve seen. If AI can reach your level of polish and dedication to the history you’re teaching, then I don’t see why it wouldn’t be useful. At the end of the day, it’s up to the Epic History Team’s discretion.

Tyler Rigdon

Regarding Alexander the Great: the further we go into AI being incorporated into our work, our art, our content, the harder it will be to get out or separate the fake from the real thing. It’s not about whether these proofs look good or bad, for me, it’s that I fell in love with your channel and so did many others for the obvious hard work, man made dedication you present in every video. Even inching closer and closer a little bit each year to utilizing AI tools turns me off a little bit. I think there’s something bold about being a great channel without doing the hype thing everybody else is doing. My two cents.

Filip Petrovic

I suppose I would be ok with using AI where it would make sense, but to me those AI images look ridiculously historically inaccurate when it comes to the armor. I feel like the value of the video would degrade if you were to use it. The original video was simpler but at least the illustrations were relatively historically accurate in that sense.

Joshua Nahmias

First, I’m so excited for your work! We are so lucky to have a creator so detail oriented and passionate about making the viewer experience as good a possible. As for the AI with alexander, as much as I’m for using technology, I think it will detract from the experience and be more of a distraction rather than being beneficial. Let’s wait for the AI to improve a bit, is my opinion. But I trust your judgement and know you will do the right thing.

Nova-Brienne

Personally I'd say relying on it too much, especially using it for images like that is a downgrade. Your quality is the best of any history content I've seen, and AI spam content is far too common. There's also the debate around AI being used over people which is a whole other thing. Just my opinion, either way I'm excited for the upcoming releases.

Kevin Xu

AI would be best for helping making image focuses and special effects and maybe some dynamic movement, but I worry that building up images from scratch will do a disservice to the attempts of accuracy of images from history or about it. Osprey’s reputation depends on accuracy, while AI’s is more focused on what people like to see

Connor Hilchie

That HRE map just gave me a massive headache. I can only imagine the sorry map makers back then who had to remember all those borders inside such a monster

Graf von Kielmansegg

Since the Alexander Video is mainly about the speech itself, I think good looking AI-imagery wouldn't be a bad thing in general and it may be worth it, just to try it out. On the use of AI-Imagery in the main videos, I would have the prerequisite of it having very high historical accuracy. Meaning either of the depiction itself or of the style of the depiction relative to real historic painters. If you can achieve this however, maybe by training AI specifially on examples of real historic imagery, then I would be open to include them aswell in main videos, especially if the video is dealing with a subject or historic time with little artwork or range of real depictions to choose from.

MitchyCool

On the AI topic, if it’s a stand-alone video of Alexander giving that famous speech to his troops, that’s fine with me. But if it’s a video about the history of modern China, or the American Revolution, or WWII - I do NOT want AI imagery utilized at all. I want all real photos and footage. As a single, stand-alone video though, I’m perfectly okay with that.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Stoked for all of this epic material!!!!! The AI I’m slightly skeptical of but this is Epic History out of anyone on YouTube & Patreon I have lil doubt 💚💚💚💚

göran persson

Will there be a series covering suvorovs Italian campaing and switzerland?

Marcos

Can't wait for the Verdun series 😛

Martin Nolan

The AI looks awful to be brutally honest and I think it would detract from the hard work that goes into the rest of the videos.

John-Mark Mamalakis

Personally I liked the Alexander Speach video the way it was originally. But I understand your intentions. I really appreciate you asking our opinions before just going forward with the AI implementation.

Stuart Carver

Some great teasers, what about China part 6, will that be out before the end of the year? As for the AI I have to admit I’m not really a fan, though the black and white is better than the coloured version. I think the original with the great artwork is far superior though.

Iv Delch

One thing along with the music is the style, absolutely beautiful, please dont ruin or risk it for the sake of faster uploading. Love your work and that humans still, as it seems have value.

Jérôme F. Kaeslin

I would not say no to AI out of principle. However, these previews have a clear AI touch. Probably, I could make these myself and the result would be indistinguishable from yours. So please keep your style - something that only you can do!

Jakob Barron

I mean using AI as a search engine, that’s fine. But using AI art? No, thanks. If that gets uploaded I’ll just skip that one

Medin Burnic

Fantastic news! It's great to see there are a lot of upcoming videos in the pipeline. Most looking forward to American Revolution PT 4 next month! As for the AI- I personally feel these example renders have a certain uncanniness to them which is often prevalent in 3D AI. I would still encourage using AI, as its use in some of Epic History's videos for making/improving images has been phenomenal, like the voices of the Peninsular War one, but I think these renders might not be ready for a video yet.

mcmaha1

I actually loved the art style on the existing Alexander video, remaking it with Ai feels unnecessary. As much as the sample styles look slick, I don't think it would actually add much to the final product.

Merrick Kibler

Please, please do not go down the AI path with your video creation. There are endless history YouTube accounts these days that are all AI and they are just awful. Those Alexander examples look like horrendous slop, and I think I noticed some AI generated imagery in the spread of Islam video. If no contemporary or human made artwork/depiction exists then it’s better to show no visual than to show ai generated images. I would rather watch a video with a stick figure of Alexander drawn by an 8 year old than a hi-fi ai generated images. Please keep Epic History the cut above the rest that it is!

Joseph Cunningham

I would LOVE an Alexander the great remake. If you're going to use AI try and make him historically accurate. Check out my AI attempt in the new video Ideas chat.

SheepFace2000

Please don’t go down the AI route

samu 1208

Please stay away from using AI Pictures. There are so many terrible AI History Videos out there. It has always been an enrichment for your channel that you use historical pictures. If there are no good pictures available, better use none at all, instead of AI. AI generated Pictures gives me always a feeling of unprofessionalism. Better take your time for the videos and keep making them as good as we know it.

Thomas Venables

There are plenty of poorly made AI videos online, so it would be great to have someone knowledgeable in history share some quality content, or at least give it a real try!

KingMMTheGreat

I think the current Alexander the Great video is perfect as is, but if you did want to experiment with AI then I'd be leaning more towards the two pictures on the right as they are a similar style to the graphics in the current video. The style of the two pictures on the left would spoil it I think. Thanks for the update guys :)

Mohammed Alsaadoon

I'm not as anti-AI as most people but I voted no to AI. History youtube is being flooded with low-quality channels partially or wholly made using AI and I don't want Epic History TV to have the same sort of reputation.

Taha Addam

I'm generally more chill about the usage of AI renders, I myself use it for enhancing a really crappy image here and there, but at the same time I'm also with others here on the subject of AI in terms of your guys' content and yeah, I think many of us agree that it would be disheartening to see this channel go down that route of 'AI Slop'. (dont get me wrong, i think so far you guys have pretty seamlessly used AI visuals to enhance your videos, which isn't that bad) I think a good way to 'hypothetically' utilize AI for a remake of your LEGENDARY Alexander video would be perhaps to animate each still by hand, so there's that human element. But I still feel like It wont scratch that itch that Alexander video had with.. what? some 14 million people that have watched it (or have rewatched it, doesn't matter).

Tony Kim

the AI art looks terrible. if u use AI, get it to look realistic for the time. this looks like some 21st century modern depiction of alexander. nothing ancient about these renders

Benjamin Stampe Mehr

As someone living in Copenhagen, I’m excited about the Battle of Copenhagen video. Recently went down a rabbit hole on this battle and visited the town of Dragør in Amager, that just like Copenhagen, was bombarded during “Slaget på reden”. Some residents there even display the cannon balls on the facade of their house as a reminder. Same thing goes for Copenhagen where cannon balls are embedded in the brick facades for display. Spoke to a local fisherman in Dragør while there - he even said that he still routinely catches cannon balls in his nets as they are so plentiful on the ocean floor.

Kieran Lancaster

Like others have mentioned I think the ai would unfairly lump you in with the other AI history channels which is a bad reputation to have when you invest a lot of time and research into your content. And secondly it'd distract not add from the speech - the drawings and still frames help you focus on the speech & the words, AI animation would look flashy but I feel like then you'd just focus on the visuals instead

Seth Pridgen

Will the Thirty Years War be Early October or Late October.

amaury A

Amazing anecdote, thank you! i'd love to catch cannon balls like that in the ocean too

The Guy With The Hat

The visuals of your Alexander the Great video are characterful, dramatic, and perfectly fit the tone of the video. The AI screenshots look generic, and bland. Don't remaster it with AI, keep the old video. I think it would be extremely controversial if you released an AI version, and I would personally be very dissapointed.

Leonardo Espino

Looks like I’m late to the party lol. 🥶🥶 no ai. Yeah it does have it’s pros and cons but it really doesn’t look good. That looks like a scene from a cheap movie production and looks even somewhat cartoonish. I won’t mind of you one day revert to AI like idk making AI say a speech (when why can’t a human read that?) written by a historical figure as compared to make images.

Ywold

When will WW2 episode 2 be coming out?

EpicHistoryTV

We're working on it, probably about 2 weeks away.

Aarush Badde

When will the American Revolution Part 4 arrive

Seth Pridgen

When will WW2 part one be out on YouTube?

Seth Pridgen

What the eta for the Thirty Years War part one?

Julian Gilyadov

I've been checking every day but no videos for a month? What is the blocker here? How can we help?

EpicHistoryTV

Videos take time! But we’ve got a bunch coming up soon..

Kevin Chen

adding ai images would genuinely kill the channels rep

AD Le

Yeah I would definitely stop subscribing the moment AI slop becomes a mainstay.
