Dear Patron,

I'm delighted to share an exclusive preview of our latest video - World War Two Episode 2 - which covers the years 1935-36, and which we've titled, 'Crisis'... Although if you were to suggest the 1930s was one big rolling omni-crisis, I would not argue with you.

There's tons of interesting history packed into this episode, from the familiar - the remilitarisation of the Rhineland, Soviet crash industrialisation - to what I hope is less well known - Haile Selassies's journey to Geneva, the Arab Revolt, the assassination of leading liberal figures in Japan, and more.

I hope you enjoy the video. I look forward to your thoughts and feedback, and let us know if you spot any typos! We've had an unprecedented run of new videos these last few weeks - there will now be a short pause, but be assured, we are working hard on the American Revolution, Copenhagen, Verdun, and more. Newsletter update next week...

Thanks as ever for supporting our work.

Great video, thank you! I have to share one piece of general feedback though: For me, a lot of the great animated movements (for example expecially in the american revolution series, not so much in this series) have a bit of flickering while transitioning, which is probably due to not enough fps. I love the movements themselves but the flickering is actually triggering my eyes a bit so that it's a bit unpleasant or I even have to look away. I'd be very curious if this is because of technical video requirements for youtube or if you could perhabs improve the transitions somehow to make them smoother?

Very interesting insight of hitlers “four-year plan”. I was waiting for you to describe how the nazis used what I (and many people who have research this) would describe as a ponzi scheme to finance the war lol. Superb information as I also didn’t knew about that conference between Italy, France and the UK to oppose Germany. Great video!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks for the feedback - do you have a particular example you can share? Our videos are produced to very high specifications - but then they are compressed by YouTube (and Patreon) for optimisation on their platforms. This is not something we can control, and sometimes it does degrade the quality, particularly when there is a lot happening on screen, such as a transition.

MitchyCool

Franco did nothing wrong.

Graf von Kielmansegg

Thank you for your quick response and possible explanation! Just one example would be the american revolution part 1, 3:22 min, where you can see especially the text and frame flicker while transitioning. (I have tested the effect on multiple devices, so it is nothing special about my device.) But if you dont know about any possible cause in your video production, YouTube compression and quality drawback seems a likely cause indeed. In this case there is off course nothing one can do and it's absolutely not your fault.

The collapse of the international community and the rise of appeasement is all dishearteningly familiar. Great video though!

Looks good so far as my historical head and eyes can see- except for one issue- Spanish Civil War, in the north of the country Oviedo was held by the Nationalists, so was Cordoba and Granada (both in the South- near Seville). That's just me being picky! Other than that, looks good so far- I expect others will pick out missing parts that I missed.

Mingyuan Chen

I wish EHTV would elaborate the Spanish Civil War in the future. It is a very intriguing war with foreign backers on both sides. What I read was the UK, France and the Soviet Union sent their funds, arms and volunteers to support the Spanish government, whereas Germany and Italy were backing General Franco.

Mingyuan Chen

And one more interesting historical thing: during WWII, Hitler asked Franco's permission to send German troops across Spain to take out the British-controled Gibraltar, henceforward to control the inlet of the Mediterranean Sea, although backed by Germany during the Civil War, Franco peacefully declined his request and thus avoided the allies' reckoning after the war. In China, we have a saying: as foxy as Franco.

Stuart Carver

Franco also infuriated Hitler when they met as he couldn’t get a word in edgeways 😂

EpicHistoryTV

Yup, I’m sure we’ll cram that into the 1940 episode - Operation Felix, if I remember correctly from my university dissertation!

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed, a fascinating and important conflict. Although the reality was slightly different - the arms embargo was essentially observed by UK, France and USA, but ignored by the dictators. So it effectively hamstrung the Spanish government forces.

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed. It’s sometimes tempting to mention the parallels in the script..

EpicHistoryTV

We will investigate. Is this on YouTube, Patreon, or both? The unfortunate fact is the videos are much higher quality than they ultimately reach you, via compressed streaming services.

EpicHistoryTV

His crimes are perhaps not on a par with the other notorious dictators of his age, but this is pretty out there as an assessment.

MitchyCool

I agree, the man wasn’t a saint or perfect by any means. What I was trying to get at though is, if I were alive in Spain around this time - I would have absolutely joined up with the Nationalists, despite the fact they had many monarchists backing them and I do have major issues with the Catholic Church. But despite all those misgivings, taking one look at the alternative- yes, absolutely would’ve fought for the nationalist side. Perfect? No. Better than THOSE PEOPLE? YES!

MitchyCool

Also, my Mom’s a Cuban Ex-Patriot, so believe me when I tell you I am VERY anti-communist, probably to a fault.

Graf von Kielmansegg

Unfortunate, but nothing to be done there... And aside from this flickering your videos are still on YouTube very high quality. Content-wise it's off course quality beyond measure!

Mingyuan Chen

Thanks for your correction. I heard about it as bedtime stories from my father when I was very young.

History is just a chain of sad and unfortunate events. I feel like anti-semitism and ultra nationalism are on the rise again. Too many parallels to draw from, it’s depressing

Flint and Ball

Please don’t. This is one of the last places one can go to escape the constant bombardment of modern politics.

AnthonyBlessed

You would be wise to remember that it was largely the work of Hans Oster and the conservative conspiracies against the National Socialists which caused this to come to pass. Giving Franco too much credit for this, and to a lesser degree lionizing his stance against Hitler, can be dangerous as a false perception.

AnthonyBlessed

In our times apathy and general ignorance of reality are more prevalent than ultra-nationalism or antisemitism. Both of which generally remain fringe in the arenas of radical politics, and are blown out of proportion when some of the people who embrace those ideas ally themselves with broad conservative parties/political fronts. Regurgitating this idea dangerously alienates and unfairly demonizes genuine conservative movements, as well as their ideas and proposals, in the broad suggestion that liberal and pseudo-centrist coalitions and policies are the best and only way forward for any nation. What is truly depressing is a grave sense of ignorance and apathy from all western populations. Who find more value in hedonistic pleasure and narrow minded self service than desiring freedom from vices, sober understanding of history, and forging a better path forward for their people. Just because one or two voices agree with the sentiments of a conservative movement, doesn't mean the whole movement embraces or endorses such a move. Nor does it mean they are likely to implement it, or that the whole movement should be rejected and discarded. The ecochamber of demonization for any level of conservatism is truly tiring, and demoralizing.

TankerBricks

The musical score for Episode 2 of WW2 series is totally nice. I could listen to the music all day long and never get bored!!!!

John Wyk

Thanks. That was great!

EpicHistoryTV

Having just checked the original video, I can't see any issues at that point. I'm sure this will be caused by the YouTube / Patreon video processing, and reduced bitrates, that creates some artefacts and flickering. The only thing I can suggest is that YouTube does offer a 1080p Premium service, with enhanced bitrates, that ought to make the videos look better - although there is a fee for the service.

Graf von Kielmansegg

Thanks for checking! I'll maybe try if its better with premium.

No mention of leftism which killed tens of times the amount that national socialism did, 100 million vs less than 10 million, interesting

Josh Nash

History may not repeat itself, but as Mark Twain once said, it sure does rhyme. The formation of the Axis eerily mirrors today’s growing alliance between Russia, China, and Iran. The similarities are hard to ignore.

Best History channel ever!

any news on the next epoisode's release ?

It's also worth noting fortifying the Maginot Line was only half of France's plan to prevent a German offensive. They didn't find an unguarded backdoor as historical jokes or skits like to portray, France wanted them to get around it by invading Belgium or Switzerland. And thanks to their alliance with Belgium, they hoped to station troops and fortify along the Meuse river. But then Belgium decided this would threaten their neutrality, and denied going through with this plan. By the time France and Britain tried to react, German forces had rapidly moved through the Low Countries, quickly broke through the Ardennes and Belgium surrendered within weeks.
