In-Depth or Just Basic Facts?

  • I want the Suez Crisis video to have as many interesting facts and detail as you can pack in, even if it takes longer to make. 80
  • I want the Suez Crisis video to be short and punchy - a quick overview is fine, so I get the basics, then on to the next topic! 21

Hello Patrons,

When I started Epic History TV a few years ago, my first idea was to create videos that make complex historical events easy to understand - short summaries that don't go into too much detail, but give viewers a good, quick overview.

HOWEVER - after a couple of years on YouTube, I'm wondering if that's actually what most people want - perhaps they actually want MORE detail, as long as the video is still interesting and engaging. So I'm asking YOU what you think, and will put it into practice immediately with the new Suez Crisis video!

Please help me to better understand what you want by voting for your favourite option.. (and feel free to leave any other thoughts or feedback on this subject)

Cheers,

Toby

Your current style is extremely good and fills a niche which isn't just a massive documentary like many others do. Stay as you are I think. EDIT: Also, the dramatic nature of your videos because of the great music you use (Like at 6:30 on World war 1 1917) also gives off an epic vibe to suit the channel name.

Honestly I will be happy with what ever you decide to do. I enjoy the overview we are currently getting but with lots of detail on the points you hit. However I will always be happy with more detail and I personally love to see feature length documentaries on minutia that you don’t see elsewhere. You do you and I’ll keep watching :)

The Internet is filled with basic summaries, shallow facts etc. We need you and love you because of the depth and epicness of your content *o*

Keep up the excellent work, your recipe is just about right!

Insight

Don't fix what isn't broken. The reason I subscribed to your channel and eventually became a paying Patreon member for you is precisely because you offered what others didn't - short, punchy, to-the-point overviews of historical events. Yes, I do realize your WWI series in all parts was more than an hour, but even THAT was short and punchy. You managed to condense into 1 hour a topic that I hadn't been able to fully grasp and understand in the last two decades of repeatedly trying to study it through watching other documentaries that were 6-12 hours long on the same subject. The value of history is learning from the patterns and themes that repeat throughout it as it informs us of where humanity is going next. The point of studying history not in memorizing every little tidbit, date, etc. even when it's nothing more than tertiary information that leads to no paradigm shift in how we think about the world and the human condition. To me, your videos were the video spiritual supplement to Will Durant's book, Lessons of History. If you haven't already, please read that book and you'll realize what you do so well, and why you shouldn't go into monotonous detail and reduce your videos to become like every other droll historical documentary series out there. Lastly, I don't think you should make this decision based on which of these two choices gets more votes - one thing to keep in mind is while your paying viewers might skew heavily in favor of more detail 80/20, I'd venture to say if you were to poll you ENTIRE viewer base (include non-payers), you'd see the vast majority (> 80%) want your videos to continue to be short and punchy. Don't sacrifice a great thing for a voices of a few paying minority. Just do what you're already doing - especially loved how you did the WWI and the Russian Revolution videos. You've helped me finally understand and retain the key ideas of events that I had to reteach myself over and over without anything sticking - until I found your channel. - Sincerely, a paying subscriber

Thanks for all the votes and the feedback! It seems most people think I shouldn't alter the format too much, but lean towards more in-depth explanation, rather than summaries that are too superficial. So this is how I will continue to play it. For example, in the Suez Canal it would be easy enough to start the story in 1956, but we're going go go ALL THE WAY back to 1869, and find out what the British were doing in Egypt in the first place! Stay tuned, more updates soon.

I feel it would be better if you put as much facts in as possible for this one video and then let the people vote on it, as you can't make on decision on something if you havnt seen it yet, you might really enjoy it! (I'm super excited the next video)
