Dear Patrons,

It's been a long road but here at last is the next installment of the Napoleonic Wars. In this episode, Napoleon takes the Prussian military back to school with one of his most devastating campaigns - though one could also argue that Marshal Davout really saved his bacon.

I hope you enjoy the video, and will appreciate that although I may not be the most prolific Youtube content creator, there's a lot of love and attention going into each sequence!

Thanks again for your amazing support. Next stop... Friedland 1807.

Awesome as usual! Very well done mate.

Wade Eckert

Great job Toby excellent video! It sure was hard seeing my much beloved Prussians take such a beating this battle though haha.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Wade, but don't worry, as you know the Prussians will be back - and next time the shoe will be on the other foot...

I think the abduction and execution of the Duc d'Enghien played a big part in her hatred for Napoleon, as it did for many other ancien regime royals. Obviously she also regarded him as an upstart, and product of the vile French Revolution!

Giancarlo Andujo

Yes, but didn't she tried to have sex with him at the peace treaty of Tilsit?

EpicHistoryTV

Well, at Tilsit, she was certainly encouraged to use her feminine charm on Napoleon in order to win a better peace treaty for Prussia (it failed). I've never read that this went as far as an actual sexual advance, and think that's highly unlikely - but also the sort of rumour that Napoleon's supporters (perhaps Napoleon himself) would happily encourage.

Giancarlo Andujo

Well, she tried to get Magdeburg for Prussia but Napoleon knew its strategic importance. Napoleon also knew that Prussia went to war against France because of Louise, so he wasn't going to give Magdeburg up especially to somebody he didn't trust.

EpicHistoryTV

But as was said of Hannibal - if only Napoleon knew how to use a victory. The severity of the treaty against Prussia ensured they would take the first opportunity to renew the war against him.

Giancarlo Andujo

If you were Napoleon, what would you have done instead?

EpicHistoryTV

I would have been magnanimous in victory! And given Hanover to Prussia, which would have wrecked relations between Prussia and Britain, and created a basis for a meaningful Franco-Prussian alliance. The alternative might have been to dismember Prussia (even more so than was done by Treaty of Tilsit) so that it virtually ceases to exist. Napoleon later said he regretted letting Frederick William keep his throne. The worst of all worlds is to turn Prussian into a wounded animal, determined on revenge. And as for making Jerome King of Westphalia? Almost impossible to defend.
