Dear Patrons,

I am pleased to present the world premiere of 'Five Great Viking Deaths' with Prof. Tom Shippey, I hope you enjoy!

You'll see that I had some extra help with this one, so big thanks to my old friend Chris (camera), Milek (art), the Holy Rood Church and Tom himself.

(Lord of the Rings fans may know that Tom is also one of the world's leading authorities on JRR Tolkien, whom he knew personally).

As I mentioned, I've been wanting to make a video about this topic for a couple of years, but it's only now with your help on Patreon that I felt able to do it justice. I very much hope you enjoy the result. In a few days I'll also post a Patreon-exclusive video with bonus interview clips, including Tom's thoughts on the Valhalla myth (spoiler: it's why I didn't call this video 'Road to Valhalla' which was my first idea!)

After a short break, I'll be back to work on the next installment of Napoleon's Marshals, which should be out in late January. I'll also have the Apollo Program Part 1 around the same time, which promises to be a spectacular visual treat.. updates and screenshots coming soon.

In the meantime have a very Happy New Year, and thank you for your support!

Toby

You are a ROCK when it comes to High Quality Video Productions! Keep up the GREAT Job You always strive to do. Thank You so much for bringing to History Lovers, TOP PRODUCTIONS as You always do. Merry Christmass and a Happy New Year also for You and Charles Nove. Greetings from Dominican Republic.

Richard

Great video as always! I would love to potentially see the Viking age portrayed in the context of the history of England! Like the way you told the history of Russia! Wishing you all the best!

Luca Schneider

Great Video i really like these Epic stories the Vikings were truly fierce till the very end

Stuart Carver

Where did you get those Viking painting they’re great? That’s awesome stuff love some Norse legends but try saying those names when you’re drunk.

Gavin Gates

Fantastic video! So interesting

Dan Jaggers

Amazing video, and a really good insight into 5 of the most well known Vikings in history, who would've known that they Vikings had such a sharp sense of wit. I feel this video alone should encourage a video or series on the History of the Vikings as a choice on the next poll!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Richard! Yes Anglo-Saxon England is a very tempting project... I always had a soft spot for the Kingdom of Northumbria, after having to present a paper about its glory years at university.

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed, or even sober.. Glad you enjoyed it, the artwork was commissioned for this series, from a very talented Polish artist who specialises in historical subjects.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Lysaniel, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, it's what made Tom's book such a joy to read, and made me want to make this video - we often completely overlook the role of humour in history! I suspect the Vikings will return to the channel in some form or other..

JDusk

Absolutely loved this! I have heard of that historian before, top notch fellow, he always struck me as the Tolkien of our age, not in writing fantasy but in just how much joy he has with these old sagas and stories. Reading his book, one can tell he has great deal of passion for his subject. I highly recommend him. But I won't forget our favorite provider of historic stories Epic History TV, thank you! I did not know I wanted this video until it was put before me! Its one of those topics that was unexpected but marvelously entertaining and informative not unlike that castle video you had done earlier! Cannot wait to see what else you will pull out of your hat sir!

Flo

Wow...once again, thank you for this incredible video, high quality, very interesting. And we can clearly see the passion transpiring for this historian !

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you very much! Very glad you enjoyed it, I think you can see how much passion Tom has for his subject, and he's a great (and very funny) writer to boot.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Florian, you're dead right about Tom, he lives and breathes this stuff, glad you enjoyed it!

Hey EHTV, Do you think you will ever consider putting out some of the maps or battle artwork you use as desktop or iPhone wallpapers?

Chirag

Toby, Fantastic work. I will always miss the Napoleonic videos, but this was incredible! The artwork in between the narrations reminded me of the History of Westeros production from Game of Thrones. I marveled on how easily the professor was able to pronounce the Scandinavian names; Charles did a great job as well. Cheers!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Chirag! Well, Tom is one of the UK's greatest experts on Old Norse literature, so he has had plenty of practice!

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Justin, there haven't been any requests for this before but I'm happy to consider it. Although most of the map are only made to video HD resolution (1920x1080) which is probably not big enough for wallpaper?

Wali Siddiq

I just had a few questions with regards to your team. How large is it currently? Do you have plans on expanding it and by how much? Just asking because I would love to see you guys make more videos more often. Cheers mate and good job on the video.

Shaun Scandrett

What a great Christmas present. As always well done , this was was a fun treat!

Absolutely fantastic! You have excelled yourself again Toby, my friend... The expert analysis by Prof. Shippey made this video even more engrossing. He is obviously very passionate about his chosen subject, and his contribution fit seamlessly with Charle's (always superb) narration and your writing, artwork and production etc. I live just down the road from Stamford Bridge, and many a time I have sat on the bank of the Derwent and imagined being in the midst of that ferocious battle. Keep up the amazing work, and I wish you and all my fellow Patreons a happy and healthy New Year...

Resident Elect

I could sit quite content and engrossed listening to Charles simply read out his shopping list, or the instruction booklet for some flat-packed furniture lol he really is such an amazing narrator!

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Wali, glad you enjoyed the video! I'm currently the only person working full-time on the videos, but I often work with specialists for artwork, filming, voice-overs, etc. Obviously I work hard to get videos out as frequently as possible, but my intention is always to make videos that are as well-researched and polished as possible, so that does require time.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad to hear how much you enjoyed this one, and interesting to hear that you're so close to the battlefield! A happy and healthy New Year to you too.
