Dear Patrons,

A quick update on the Napoleon's Marshals series: the final episode will be available here on Patreon on Friday 19 March. I've attached a few sneak peeks - I don't need to keep the identities hidden this time as we all know the last episode will cover Berthier, Davout and Lannes - but in which order?! The video will be accompanied by news on which lucky Patrons guessed our final ranking, and will be receiving their very own Marshal's batons!

We also have Apollo Program Part 2 in production, which will launch in first week of April - this episode covers the first moon landing, and will be another highly polished blend of archive and original CGI.

I hope you are all keeping well, safe and sane, and thank you again for your amazing support.

The way pictures are sorted implicates that Lannes will be 3rd, Berthier will be 2nd and Davout will be 1st.

Can't wait to learn more about Berthier's staff system. He's probably one of the most underrated marshals. I suppose I'm equally curious to see what his "battle honours" would comprise of.

EpicHistoryTV

I can assure you there are no hidden clues in the picture order - based on aesthetic interest only!

Lazar Momcilovic

Oh well ok, I said this because I figured something similar two videos ago (Part 4 - Bessieres, Macdonald and Massena).

Sitraka Forler

Berthier thén Lannes and the best being Davout (He even saw the best option in Russia....)

boot live

Lannes in third, Berthier second and Davout first. After reading two books on the Marshals due to this series I'm confident (hopefully) in my call. Surely Davout fighting off the main Prussian army at Auerstädt, and his refusal to surrender Paris without an amnesty for the other Marshals makes him the greatest of the great?

Darko

I am super curious to see the final ranking. I am already out of the game, putting Ney in top 3. Which was more important, without Davout there would be no Auerstedt, without Berthier there would be no Grand Armee, without Lannes there would be no Napoleon(?)

Flo

Davout is from my region Burgundy, when i go for a drink (before Corona lol) i always walk on the Louis Nicolas Davout street... <3

John-Mark Mamalakis

I am overflowing with excitement for this next episode!!

Line_of_Blood

Are you going to show remy and your personal Marshal’s lists at the end of the video, it would be interesting to see both of your rankings before you collaborated and how both you differs with certain marshals

Amin Ibrahim

Berthier number one! We've seen how Napoleon fares without him....

EpicHistoryTV

I would, but we didn't work quite that way. I would propose an order, Rémy would critique, then I would incorporate his thoughts. I can tell you, however, that the biggest changes came from Rémy's point that those who betrayed or fought against France must be ranked lower. I guess the value of a French soldier's perspective, versus that of a part-time English historian!

Stuart Carver

Lannes doesn’t get enough credit for his action at Friedland holding off a force more than 3 times his size, just as impressive as Auerstedt for my money?

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

I guess one cannot blame them. Benedict Arnold was perhaps the best tactical commander the Americans had... but one is hard pressed to find the US officer that would include him at the top of any list!

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

I think the results will inspire a lot of discussion about the relative value of staff officers vs. line officers. What is the old saying attributed to Patton? Amateurs talk tactics, professionals talk logistics?

Maggie Scott

And he did it for more than 11 straight hours, with Oudinot, Grouchy, and Nansouty, among a few others. Were it not for that bit of clever deception between Posthenen and Sortlack, there would be little reason for Ney to charge in after five pm, with Naps on his heels, and claim all the glory.

Louis Chiodo

I wish Lannes would've lived longer I feel like he died too young and could've made more of a difference i'd like to believe.. Imagine Lannes being apart of Leipzig

Andrew Robson

Davout number one mainly because Jena-Auerstadt, one of Napoleon's great victories was really Davout's victory, beating the main Prussian army. Also, because of his actions in the early stages of the 1809 Austrian campaign. Only bad reverse was the mauling at Vyazma.

Louis Chiodo

Something overlooked by many was his defense of Hamburg, by holding it he protected Napoleons northern flank and Hamburg’s defenses were lacking, supplies dwindled and he was outnumbered and he held it til the Bourbon king told him to

Oscar Rigo

Super excited for the last part!!!

Miibez

Is there going to be a episode like the Napoleon (parts 1-6) that has all the marshals in one video? Like a 2 hour video that includes every marshal? Super excited to see the top 3 order, cant wait!

Andrew Robson

Agreed. I like the ruthlessness in expelling the civilian population also as supplies ran low.

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, I'll release a compilation video after the last part. It will be.. about 2.5 hours long?!

Camouflage

Awesome, I was wondering if you will make a video about Napoleon in the style of Marshals

EpicHistoryTV

Like a big biography? Oooh that would be a long video! I won't take it on this year, but maybe a future project..

Camouflage

Something like that, cool, I will watch anything you make.

CJ Tabunda III

I read an article about Davout. It says there that the primary reason of his inclusion as one of the first marshals of Napoleon is because of Davout's mentor and Napoleon's close friend General Louis Desaix. Napoleon wanted to honor Desaix, who was killed at Marengo. Maybe, if Desaix did not die at Marengo and saw Napoleon become emperor, he would have been included in the first batch of marshals. But that doesn't mean Davout would not become a marshal. Maybe in a later stage of the Napoleonic wars. Napoleon was well aware of Davout's capability.

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, seems quite likely, and the death of General Leclerc in Haiti (Davout's brother-in-law) also helped to ensure Davout made the first list of Marshals.

CJ Tabunda III

Oh, I forgot Charles Leclerc! Brother of Davout's wife. Also a very capable commander under Napoleon who would become a marshal if he had lived longer.

CJ Tabunda III

Davout's inclusion as one of the first marshals earned him the resentment of his fellow officers in the French Army. They complained why an upstart young commander with little experience was included in the first batch of marshals. But they did not saw what Napoleon saw in Louis-Nicolas Davout. Maybe the emperor saw brilliance in him. You mentioned in your earlier episodes that Napoleon measures the abilities of his commander. Most of the time he was right. He correctly judged that Massena and Soult's capabilities as independent commanders, while the likes of Ney and Oudinot would be most effective if under Napoleon's close supervision.

CJ Tabunda III

While Davout, he excelled in both independent command and while under Napoleon's supervision. His great victory at Auerstadt proved that he can be a reliable commander without the presence of the emperor. Also, his conduct in the 1809 Bavarian campaign should be noted.

Louis Chiodo

makes sense, one of those one step forward two steps back sort of thing

Louis Chiodo

Yes but what exactly did Berthier accomplish during the Russian Campaign, Leipzig and 1814?

Louis Chiodo

not sure on that, Berthier was in command at the start of the 1809 campaign and was almost responsible for the destruction of Davouts corps but thankfully Napoleon got there in time to get Davout out of there, while in the 1809 campaign Lannes helped prevent Aspern from being a disaster valiantly holding his area. After 1809 what did Berthier really accomplish? Sure he was a main force behind the planning and organization of the Russian campaign in 1812 but does that really matter?

CJ Tabunda III

I forgot to mention. I hope you would quote Napoleon when he called Davout "one of the purest glories of France."

Line_of_Blood

@epic history, will you show your original proposed list at least? also has this project changed your perspectives on certain marshals for better or for worse?

CJ Tabunda III

Looking forward to watching it👍. Thanks!

EpicHistoryTV

The original list was just to kick start the conversation, so is not really of much interest. But yes, my opinion of many Marshals has changed a lot during the series. In all, I've spent about 30 days reading primary and secondary sources on them, and learned a lot, particularly about their pre-Empire careers. I didn't realise, for example, that Bernadotte was such a famous general of the Revolutionary period, while in comparison Davout and Bessieres were non-entities. I didn't realise how many mistakes Murat made, or how badly he was regarded by the other Marshals. Or how important Macdonald was in 1813/4. And that Ney was EVEN MORE heroic than I had previously understood!

Pierre Arnaud

Can't wait to watch it. Davout was unbeaten throughout his career. The death of Lannes was a huge blow.

Amin Ibrahim

We shall find out tomorrow! That Marshall’s baton will look so good on my wall. Here’s to hitting max nerd level!

Gaurav Rao

Really can't wait to hear the life of Marshal Lannes. Favorite marshal of mine by far and honestly, I am pleased he's the top 3. I reckon it will be Lannes - Berthier - Davout in that order. Lannes, if assuming that momentum could be maintained would have been the greatest Marshal (at least my opinion) if he had not died in 1809.

Flo

Cannot wait for the last part really !! :')

EpicHistoryTV

It's exporting now, and then needs to upload... Hopefully around 20.30 GMT. (it's 40 minutes long so everything takes a lot longer!)
