Dear Patrons,

I am pleased to share with you 'Salamis 480 BC - The Battle for Greece'. This is the story of how the ancient Greek city-states came together to defeat the world's greatest empire, in a dramatic naval battle fought near Athens. It's one of history's great turning points, and thanks to Herodotus, it's also one of the earliest surviving tales of a struggle for freedom against the odds. And after many months of stop-start production (long story), it's out just in time for the 2,500th anniversary!

I hope you enjoy it. Do please share your thoughts and feedback. I'm particularly interested to know how people feel about the  music and sound effects - too loud, too quiet, just right?

(edit: I forgot to mention this was a Merch for Typos situation, but the first typo was already spotted!)

A big thanks to Nedim Can Incebay for his help with Total War gameplay footage. To Vasilis Manthopoulos for much of the music. To Dresden of Divide Et Impera for modding support. And to my old friend Russel Herneman for original artwork.

This video goes public on Friday. I'll share the YouTube link as soon as it's available.

I am now moving swiftly onto Belisarius. Once again, I hope you enjoy, and thanks again for your invaluable support.

Toby

A new video! Needed a pickup today! Thanks Toby

Oddyseus

There's a spelling error, Mtyilene should be spelled as Mytilene at 02:28. Great video nonetheless

EpicHistoryTV

Good spot, thank you Oddyseus! We're doing Merch for Typos (I forgot to mention in the post), and you've won! I'll message you to arrange a prize shortly.

David Hennessy

I've spotted another I'm afraid. Big one. At 12.32, just to the north of Athens, the word 'traitors' has been erroneously spelt 'Thebes'.

EpicHistoryTV

Lol. 2,500 years later and they're still getting grief. I wonder if the legacy had any impact on Alexander's decision to level the city? Probably not, but I'm sure 480 was mentioned!

Dan Jaggers

Fantastic video, this was well worth the long wait for! I have to say I love the production value that has gone into this video, and I really love the banners used for the land troops, a neat handover from the Napoleonic wars series.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Lysaniel! I had fun designing them, copying the hoplite helmet from a famous Greek amphora.

Rick Reactions

You’ve outdone yourself with this one. The production value was off the charts and well worth the wait. Magnificent maps, art, music and storytelling! Can’t wait for whatever’s next in store!

Andrew Herbst

Loved it. Solid work as always! I personally love the various artwork in your videos. I know the video game type graphics are great for visuals, but I prefer the paintings and other graphic pictures. (that is not meant to be a complaint, just emphasizing that I enjoy the artwork!)

Philip Forinton

I enjoyed it a lot, very good and informative video! However, you missed out a necessary (in my opinion) detail: During two full days of the Battle of Thermopylae, the small force led by Leonidas blocked the only road by which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a small path used by shepherds, which allowed them to encircle Leonidas' army. Otherwise, all looks great!

This channel making videos about Belisarius is going to be awesome

Isaac Lavine

Amazing video again, it lives up to your channel name as truly epic. Thank you Toby!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Andrew! Good to have your feedback. Obviously I'm a huge fan of historical artwork too, and I'm lucky there's so much great work I can use for the Napoleonic period. For the ancient period though, there's much less, which is why I use gameplay footage.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Philip. Yes it's a good point, although I did not want to get drawn too much into the details of Thermopylae and Artemisium - the video was already long enough!

Sean Leavey

I figured you left it out because everyone knows the (admittedly stylised and embellished) story from 300!

Sean Leavey

Awesome video, I learned loads! I knew very little about this campaign and its apparent huge consequences on western culture and ideals. Great work as always Toby!

Sitraka Forler

Awesome ! It's ..;wow really well made ! Bravo !

Andrew Herbst

I thought the same as Sean, Thermopylae gets so much attention, but Salamis does not.

Eric Sorkin

Another masterpiece! They are so enthralling that I try to get my wife to watch. It’s a win-win. She either likes it and watches with me or falls asleep and I can watch in peace 🤣

EpicHistoryTV

lol, thank you Eric! Glad it's working for you both!

Resident Elect

Feedback: Perfect... The narration, music, sound effects, animation, artwork, maps etc etc all on point as per usual. The only thing now on my mind is just how many "This is Sparta!" And other quotes from 300 will be posted when this is uploaded to for the YouTube masses lol 😆

Aaron Snakenberg

Very well done, I plan to use it in my class this year.

Resident Elect

@Sean Leavey I've just posted a comment making light of the fact that when Toby uploads this to YouTube the comment section is going to absolutely inundated with 300 quotes... Especially when the "well kicking" is mentioned lol

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad you enjoyed it! Yes I'm sure you're right, the 300 fan club will be out in force..

Flo

Waow, just WOW thank you so much for this. Definetly the best YT channel.

luc

Very good video ! Maybe a mini serie on Peloponnesian war of 2 videos after

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks! I'd love to take on the Peloponnesian War one day, but would like to give it more than 2 episodes..

Hisham Yousif

Great video Toby. And timely! I was reading an introduction to Hegel and it seems like he attributed a lot of weight to this battle in the dialectic of history. According to him history began its march with Zoroastrian Persia. Her defeat at Salamis was her denouement with history moving to the Greek world, then Roman, then resistance, enlightenment and finally christian reformed Prussia. An oversimplified Hegel I’m sure. But again, timely and thanks!

RiseofArn

I really appreciate the videos about ancient Greek. Especially with the rome total war 2 scenes. Keep up the awesome work!
