YouTube link to Belisarius Part 2

Dear Patrons,

Here is the premiere of Belisarius Part 2 - The Empire Strikes Back! In this episode we see Belisarius given command of the expedition against the Vandals of North Africa, but he's not even left the Hellespont before his Hun mercenaries have started murdering each other, leading to swift justice... In fact it's Belisarius's ability to (mostly) maintain discipline amongst his small force that is the major theme of this episode, and the key to success. I hope you enjoy!

Merch for Typos is in effect, first person to spot one gets any item of their choice from the store.

Thank you all for your support, and for making this series possible. I'll be moving swiftly on to Part 3, in which Belisarius reaches the gates of the Eternal City...

Very amazing, always like the narration, the musical atmosphere and of course the graphics (total war sequences, maps and drawings). Everything is beautiful and catchy ;-)

Rick Reactions

You always get excited whenever Rome is about to make a huge comeback, only to be gravely disappointed by the end results. Regardless, the video production quality is excellent as always. Keep up the good work! :)

Dan Jaggers

Very well done, this short war with the Vandals was a brilliant one, minimal loss of life and a hearts and minds approach, but already in the shadows we can see the intrigue and cloak and dagger that will cloud this story later on. This isn't really a typo, but I noticed that the banners for the Persian armies from 2:51 to 3:02 were the same as the Vandals when they should be as they were in the first video, just something I noticed right away in the video.

Kellen

Excellent video once again! I was hooked from start to finish. I don’t ever suggest history videos to my friends who aren’t as into as I am, but this one was so interesting i am thinking about it.

Alexandre Evrard

Incredible as always ! Do you plan to work on the Hundred Years War ? It would be great !

Darko

Great video, many interesting details, kudos. Might not be a mistake, but 7.42 you say Libya when clearly pointing to today's Tunis

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

I think what impresses me the most about Belisarius is how he's prepared to deal with soldiers who commit crimes/atrocities. You find all too many commanders throughout history who quite willingly turned a blind eye to such things.

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

The destruction of the Vandal armies is an ample demonstration of how luck, as much as skill, can determine the fate of nations. Gelimer's tactics were correct at Ad Decium. But just really bad luck his cavalry broke so easily, and that he happened to come upon his brother. But, as Napoleon said “I'd rather have lucky generals than good ones.”

Dude

It is more correct to put AD in front of the year than before it. AD 533 is preferred. Not 533 AD.

Tony

Vandals trashed my car last Sunday morning. They're still around you know.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Viridyan! I call it 'Merch for Typos' but I include any small silly mistakes like this, and you are the first to spot it! Many thanks, I'll get it fixed and I'll message you about your prize..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, and please do! Word of mouth is still so important to helping a channel like this thrive and grow..

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Alexandre, glad you enjoyed it! That would indeed make an excellent series - perhaps a future project. Make sure you recommend it when we're discussing the next vote..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Darko. This was in fact deliberate - what's now Libya was then known as Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, while Libya was used in different ways, sometimes meaning the whole of North Africa. I'm going to flag it with our new series consultant Prof David Parnell, it's a good point and may change for the YouTube release.. Thanks for pointing out.

EpicHistoryTV

Sorry to hear about your car. Where's the Eastern Roman Empire when you need it..

EpicHistoryTV

You are technically correct, and I did consider this for Episode 1. In the end I went with 532 AD - I think these days, because of increasing usage, it sounds more natural to an English ear, and works better for a script.

EpicHistoryTV

Absolutely. Although one might argue that a third column overcomplicated things, and what happened to the Vandal reconnaissance?!

Bjorn Bumactao

Hmm for me the post says “video does not exist “ can you assist me ?

EpicHistoryTV

Hey Bjorn, sorry to hear this. It's definitely there - these problems are usually connected to privacy or VPN settings? Or possibly browser settings? Let me know if you still can't get it working and I'll message you a link.

Luca Schneider

May I ask about the song starting at 3:52. as well as the song starting at 6:51 :)

EpicHistoryTV

By all means. The first is called Futurewar from Filmstro, the second is called Full Hostiles from Premium Beat.

Luca Schneider

Thank you so much, you are very fast ;)

Luca Schneider

Wonderful and Great video as always, truly amazing work!

EpicHistoryTV

In fact we will be changing this, thank you Darko! For the Romans, Libya is the whole of North Africa, so it doesn't really make sense to use it the way we currently do.

Andrew Herbst

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this video, one of my recent favorites. You outdid yourself.

Stuart Carver

Is it sad that I play these video every day to and from work? Hell no I’m surprised the entire Cotswolds haven’t heard me blaring them out yet. Awesome stuff as always. What made you decide to use the present tense for the scripts for the videos? Adds to the drama to make it seem like these events could be happening now. The writing is often overlooked but it’s extremely well written.

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

One of the maxims of reconnaissance, at least taught to US Army Cav Scouts, is minimal assets forward. Had the Vandals done their jobs right the Huns would have only overrun a thin screen-line and the larger elements would not have been surprised. I blame the comforts of Africa for softening the Vandals. Their Germanic voluptuousness combines with their newly found Punic laziness and the result is they'd rather bathe with sponges, compose lyre music and make love with their faces than fight!

Darko

Glad I could help :) How come then it's Scipio Africanus and not Libyanus? xD

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, they certainly seem to have had a great time in North Africa! Who can blame them..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart, that's great to hear! I often end up writing action sequences in the 'historical present tense', but then find myself slipping back into past tenses for the main narrative. I thought I'd commit to it for this series - as you say, it can add a lot of drama. (I did the same thing in the WW1 series).

EpicHistoryTV

No it's still there. Playback issues tend to be caused by privacy settings on your browser or VPN. If you check those and still can't get it to play, please message me and I'll send a link.

EpicHistoryTV

Good question! The Romans mostly use Africa to refer to western North Africa, what's now Tunisia and where Carthage is. When it became a Roman province they named it Africa Proconsularis.

Styll Fresco

Im very hooked on. Any ETA for the much anticipated third part?

EpicHistoryTV

Good, that's the plan! Part 3 will be out around 10 Dec. You'll get the first updates here on Patreon.

Wesley Barley

Great job as usual. Is the Menorah in 19:35 a general golden booty-plunder picture? or is there actually some evidence that the Vandals removed it from Rome and Belisaruis recovered it? It seems too unexpected to be unitentional, and too random to be false.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, and good spot! Yes, Procopius mentions that the Vandal treasure included much of the loot from Rome (455), which itself included the treasure from the sacking of the Temple of Jerusalem by Titus (70). According to Procopius, Justinian was persuaded by a Jew in Constantinople that it would bring the city bad luck, so he had the treasure from the Temple sent back to Jerusalem.

Wesley Barley

Thanks. Very interesting. Always appreciate your attention to detail. Keep up the good work!

Tom Vansel

Another excellent production. Thank you for your hard work.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for your support!
