Dear Patrons,

I am very pleased to share the new Belisarius episode, in which the Roman Empire recaptures Rome... but then has to hold it. The siege of Rome lasted one year and nine days, and was truly one of the epic sieges of history. I hope you enjoy this account!

Merch for Typos is in effect - we had a 'perfect' video last time I think? I'm sure there'll be a typo hiding in this one somewhere.

I'll be moving straight on to Belisarius Part 4, but that won't be out until mid-January, as Epic History TV will be taking a few days off over Christmas and New Year.

Quick reminder about the plan for 2022: after the Belisarius series, I'll be prioritising our 1848 'Year of Revolutions' video, and HMS Victory project... then we will see the return of a certain General Bonaparte, with a vote here on Patreon to decide which chapter of his story we tell next...

Thank you again for your generous support, and hope you enjoy the video!

Toby

General Bonaparte's conquest of Italy deserves a triumph in my opinion! Maybe he could be made Consul as a reward...oh wait.

Line_of_Blood

Not sure if this is a typo, but at 7:37 the sound kind of distorts when the narrator says “Italy”

EpicHistoryTV

It's not a typo but it's useful feedback, thank you. I'll take another look.

Isn't absolutely crazy how the Roman Empire has inspired basically every European ruler and kingdom/empire, from Charlemagne to Napoleon? Heck, even further back in history still.

Rick Reactions

Ah yes, these events took place in a time when the court of Constantinople still could depose a pope at will lmao.

Mzee

This was really good. How many more videos do you plan on doing about Belisarius? One or two?

Nigel Pierce

Yes!! Loved it! Long live the empire!

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

Isn't interesting? Constantine made it clear in teams of hierarchy that the Emperor was God's Regent on Earth, and the Bishop of Rome merely his vicar. Of course, it just so happens that the Popes discovered they had far more power vested in them at about the same time the Eastern Empire lost control of Rome! Not only that, but the Donation of Constantine pops up as well. Funny the timing!

Astra Solace

Yes! 2022 is going to be another EPIC year! Can't wait for 1848.... and as for dear Napoléon, please milk the series as much as possible lol. E.g. 1794's Battle of Saorgio, 1795's 13 Vendémiaire, Battles of the 1796-1797 1st Italian Campaign like Arcole & Rivoli, etc. There's actually still a lot more Napoléonic stuff to churn out!

Josh perry

Absolutely class video once again! The amount of work and passion you put into your videos is palpable, keep it up gang

Wow, great video. I wasn't sure what to think about this series initially, but videos 2 and 3 especially have blown me away! One question I did have though, is about Rome's population in the first century AD. I have heard a few scholars say 1 million, and not 500k as you state in the video. I do not have a source off the top of my head, but I was just curious about where your 500k population comes from? I simply ask for my own knowledge, because I have wondered about this very question.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! I'm not entirely sure myself yet! Ideally one more to go, but there may be too much good stuff to fit into one episode..

EpicHistoryTV

There certainly is a lot more to cover! I'll be narrowing it down to 4 options then we'll have a vote in the new year.

Awesome as always hard to believe anyone could withstand a siege that long, very impressive I wonder what the longest ever siege is in history?

Mzee

Why not make the last video 10 minutes longer than usual in order to fit everything? Or do you have to stick to a certain time limit for each video?

Isaac Lavine

Great video as always, thank you!

EpicHistoryTV

The siege of Candia (a Venetian-ruled port on Crete) by the Ottomans lasted 21 years!

EpicHistoryTV

I aim to release a video roughly once per month. If the videos got longer they would take even longer to make!

Excellent job Toby. Shedding light on a subject I’m in the dark about. Looking forward to the new year ‘48 and “Victory” are gonna he spectacular, I’m sure. And oh what music to years to here about the return of The French Emperor. I still rewatch the old videos regularly. Happy holidays and best to you and yours in the new year!

EpicHistoryTV

Many thanks Hisham, and happy holidays to you and yours also!

Happy New Year 🎇 Toby! When is the next Belisarius Series Video?

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Richard, happy New Year to you too! The next Belisarius video should be ready in exactly 1 week.

Richard Fernandes
