Dear Patrons,

I am very pleased to share Belisarius Part 4: The General & The Eunuch!

No pitched battles in this episode (just a little one at the beginning), but instead some intriguing (and disastrous) personality clashes, some intricate negotiation, plus the sack of a great city and a very brutal execution.. (extra little fact that didn't make it into the script: we actually know this man's name: Bourkentios. And after describing his gruesome end, Procopius drily adds, 'Thus did Bourkentios profit from his love for money.')

I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to all your comments and feedback.

Merch for Typos is in effect for the first to spot one, usual rules apply.

Thanks again for your support, more news and updates soon.

Awesome! Greatly enjoyed it. The ending got me, I was ready for the next scene and the video left me with an "ah man!" Ha. Can't wait for what comes next.

I think the typo is a transpositional typing .. at 2:19 in the video.. the year was 538

Rick Reactions

"...in the interests of our Republic." Are we still maintaining this notion? :D

EpicHistoryTV

Yup, good spot, thank you! I'll message you to arrange your reward..

EpicHistoryTV

Oh yes, he's only the First Citizen after all ;)

Rick Reactions

Looks like Diocletian is just about the only one that was honest about the authoritarian nature of the "Republic".

Mzee

This was extremely interesting. Great video.

Mzee

I’m wondering if the famine you mention in the video was also the result of a volcanic eruption that happened?

EpicHistoryTV

Well - perhaps! Simple answer, we don't know, although Procopius, who was travelling around Italy at the time, is clear that the harvest was there, it just hadn't be gathered because of the war. I'll dig into this a bit when we get to the great plague...

Tommy

Great video! Love the time period and Belisarius! Well done chaps!

Richard Fernandes

A-MA-ZING Work as ALWAYS! The await was WORTH it! Now looking forward for the next video. Keep UP the great JOB 💪🏼.

Isaac Lavine

Wonderful video, thank you Toby! I can feel Belisarius' frustration, with internal politics spoiling his careful plans. It's very interesting, can't wait for the next episode!

There is something truly unique and special about your content. Seriously, I have never seen history docs like this before. And that narrator 🙌

I also wanted to know whether the Burgundians and Goths promised not to harm the civilians in Milan if the city surrendered? Wasn’t this the agreement they reached with the garrison?

EpicHistoryTV

No, the garrison negotiated only for their own safe passage. They knew exactly what would happen to the civilians, which was why their commander, Mundila, pleaded with them to do then only honourable thing, and go down fighting!

I love those illustrations of main caracters ! Great vidéo once again! Bravo!!!

12:47 Procopius's eyewitness account of the starving peasants was horrific. Not to make lights of the immense suffering those poor souls endured, but he could have been describing a scene from the likes of "The Walking Dead". Sadly humanity continued to experience such horrors even into the 20th century, thanks to Nazi concentration camps, Mao's "great leap forward" and the famines of Bengal, North Korea, and Somalia etc. Thanks yet again for an informative and thought provoking documentary, Toby.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you. Yes it's a shocking description, and grimly familiar from 20th century archive film.
