Dear Patrons,

I am very pleased to share the 'The Decembrists - Russia's First Revolutionaries' Part 1 with you. This is the exclusive Patreon ad-free early access (not public until next Thursday.)

This series is a little different from our usual fare - no battles or outflanking manoeuvres, but much discussion of constitutions and political reform instead! I hope you will nevertheless find it engaging and informative. I look forward to your feedback (about one sequence in particular, which you will know when you see it...)

Typos for Merch is in effect - first person to spot one gets any item from the store.

Just a reminder of our upcoming schedule:

The Decembrist Part 2

Discussions and votes on next Napoleon topics: 1 mini-series, 1 special.

1848 - Year of Revolutions

HMS Victory - 2 episodes

More Napoleon videos!

Thanks again for all your amazing support, and I'll be back with more updates soon. Don't forget you can fire me any questions on any topic either here in the comments, or by direct message on Patreon.

What an excellent video Toby! Exceeded all expectations! I am spinning with anticipation for part 2. Personally I hope the "Waterloo Redux" wins for the Napoleon mini-series, it would be an excellent opportunity to visit and explore the 100 Days. Keep up the great work Toby! ~Tom

Rick Reactions

A poignant reminder that the struggle for freedom for the Russian people is long, bloody and continues to this day.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Tom, glad you enjoyed it! It's going to be a very interesting vote..

EpicHistoryTV

Exactly that. Well put. There's a very obvious reason why we (myself and Ivan in Moscow) wanted to make something about this topic at this time..

Richard Fernandes

You ALWAYS excell with your new videos!! You are a Rock Star on History Video Productions! Looking forward to part 2.

Andrew Herbst

When I saw the Patreon update notification I stopped what I was doing and jumped over to watch! You and Charles never disappoint! Solid episode, thanks for contributing to my fascination with Russian history. May part 2 come quickly!!!

Rebellican

It never fails to amaze me how much the quality of your content improves with every video

Filip Petrovic

I echo everyone's sentiments. Very well done EHTV and I'm looking forward to part 2! :)

Stuart Carver

Kondraty Ryleyev’s satire should be propagated in Russia today. Russias history is endlessly fascinating awesome stuff. I hope you don’t make anything on this current conflict….such us other more odious channels, do you have a policy on how much time needs to pass before it’s possible to fully illuminate a period of history or a conflict?

Nathaniel Crawley

Can you release the names of the materials that you used to research the topic? I'm interested in some further reading. I know that you used historians as advisors in previous documentaries.

Christian Bennetsen

Whenever Extra History TV uploads new videos It feels like Christmas and I stop what I'm doing to watch.

MitchyCool

Holy sh*t! THE FACES MOVE!! It actually freaked me out at first - I LOVE it, don't get me wrong! I was just NOT expecting that, lol!

Jerry Johnston

The southern faction in Ukraine hungry for liberty in a way that's too "extreme" for the rest of Russia. History repeating itself.

Kristian Hagberg

Great video as always!!! 😁 Btw, Emperor Ivan IV would(as far as I know) have been killed 1741 not 1764 by Elizabeth. 😊

Samuel Pattinasarane

Sound, solid, thorough work as always , thought the bobbling faces of the Decembrists felt awkward 😁

EpicHistoryTV

I'm glad to hear you share my fascination with Russian history! I don't have a policy as such - I think one could cover the Falklands War with reasonable objectivity, for example, but not an ongoing conflict.

EpicHistoryTV

Haha, glad you liked it! I know not everyone's a fan (and the software is not perfect) but I think it's a fun little device.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! I think 1764 is the right date for Ivan VI, he was kept in prison in solitary confinement for many years, it's a brutal and tragic tale.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Good to get your feedback. I'm in two minds about the bobbling faces myself, but overall I think people are finding them kinda fun..

Astra Solace

Man holy shit Toby, the way you made this Decembrist series feel sort of like a follow-up sequel spinoff to Napoléon's actions is sooooo fucking awesome. Even the haunting music soundtrack is crazy immersive with the visuals and animations. Can't wait for Part 2! I also can't wait to see this uploaded on Youtube and watch the algorithm soak up the word "Russia" and disperse it to crazy amount of viewers who are now attuned in to anything "Russia" related! More Epic History TV followers to come!!!!

EpicHistoryTV

Haha, thank you! It will be interesting to see how many YouTube viewers stick around for the detailed coverage of various draft constitutions!

Kieran

Enjoyed it greatly, can’t wait for the 2nd episode

EpicHistoryTV

Great! Then I will see if Ivan has any recommendations.. The most interesting stuff in my opinion is the published interrogations with the Decembrists. They were interviewed for months after the revolt. I was consulting an online compilation in translation (published by a Canadian academic in the 1980s) but now absolutely cannot find it..

MarbleHit

such a fan of your work thank you for taking the time to show us these secret parts of history <3

Carson

The animated faces gave me a CK3 vibe, loved it. Fantastic video as always .

Adam J. Danberg

You Just did what Tolstoy failed to do. Incredible!!!

gigantes imperator

I know you talk different, but is that how you spell maneuvers?

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Hi Toby. As a Russian history obsessive I'm ashamed to say I only became aware of this event a few years ago, but all the same it's absolutely fascinating and it's great to see you presenting it in detail.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gavin, glad you enjoyed it. Yes all the political turmoil and opposition in Russia in this period is fascinating - intellectuals and idealists against the iron fist of autocracy!

Richard Fernandes

Hi Toby! Regarding for the typos that You suggest for Us to watch in the vídeo. I guess that in the beginning of the vídeo, where You mention Russia's struggle against Napoleon, You display 3 images with their respective names: The Battle of Borodino and The Burning of Moscow. In the First where You show The Battle of Leipzig in Second 47 of The Video, Here You didn't write it as it happened with the others two. In case that I'm right with this about the typos I detected, let me know.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Richard, but this is not quite what I mean. Typos are the small mistakes that I do not spot in the video - usually spelling a name wrong ('Napoloen') or putting the wrong date.

Mohammed Alsaadoon

Back in the day people took oaths that seriously. Can't wait for episode two.

Stuart Carver

Ah ok so usually something measured in decades? Also are al, the dates pertaining to Russia actually using the Julian calendar not the Gregorian?

EpicHistoryTV

Generally decades, but I don't have a rule for it. Obviously the quality of the history changes with the passage of time, improving in some ways, deteriorating in others. Yes, Julian calendar (although the death date of Paul is one of two things I'm getting fixed before the YT release, the other being that Alexander was not technically childless..)

Adam J. Danberg

You came father than he did thats for sure! Excited for 1848 too!!!

Patrick wilcher

You gotta do one of these for the Nazis and Hitler's rise to power🤞

Resident Elect

Gripping stuff Toby! To echo many of my fellow Patreons, I cannot wait for part 2! I think the Russian elite must have very long memories, hence why even in 2022 the army are somewhat mistrusted, often punished severely when operations fail to meet their objectives, and it's seniour leadership are kept out of the "inner sanctom" if you will...

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Yes, and as we will see in Part 2, the current regime is still wary of the memory of the Decembrists..

Eiko Streitz

Very, very thrilling episode of a less known movement. Just one thing on the map showing the intended federal structure, are you shure about the provinces Don and Ukraine? Would make more sense to me if both would be switched by one another, the Don river is not located that far in the west.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Eiko! This is a very good point. I know exactly why it's happened, because Muravyev gives the capital of Don region as Cherkassy, and the capital of Ukraine as Kharkiv, so I've based the regions on the capital cities and forgot about the names. I'm going to redo this map. I'm very happy to count this as a typo, I will message you about your prize!

Eiko Streitz

Glad I could contribute something ! I checked out the location of both cities too and its totally understandable how it influenced the map.
