Dear Patrons,

I am very pleased to share HMS Victory Part 2. This 29 minute video covers many aspects of the British navy and naval war in the Napoleonic age - from the composition of the crew, to points of sail, tacking and wearing ship, kedging, warping, the watch system, gunnery tactics, the crew's diet, navy discipline and more! This video, even more than usual, is packed with historical detail, and you get to see it a full 9 days before everyone else.

I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to your thoughts and feedback. Merch for Typos is in effect - first person to spot one and let me know here in the comments gets any item from the merch store as thanks.

Our HMS Victory series is now concluded. Next up, more Napoleon! Thank you to everyone who took part in the recent polls. As decided here on Patreon, the next topics will be Napoleon in Italy 1796, and the Battle of Eylau.

More updates soon, and thank you for your support!

Loved it

All the info about sailing into the wind etc. is why I love these videos. Never knew any of that. Adds a level of appreciation to the complexity of moving over large distances or evading/engaging enemies when time may be of the essence.

Eiko Streitz

Outstanding, don't think that there exists any comparable documentation on this topic anywhere in the world.

whollibaugh

crazy to think how much 'manpower' was needed to utilize these vessels. Handmade machines that fought nature as much as other men

Marcos

This is more than worth my Patreon membership. As mentioned above, I am a big history fan as well as a history documentary scavenger, and I have never seen anything with this quality.

Hethwill Wargames

Another episode, another extremely good establishment of information. Thank you !

EpicHistoryTV

While I was making it, I was wondering if anyone had ever covered splinter netting before!

Eiko Streitz

To me it was totally new, never seen in literature or movies/documentations

Love the detail, especially the representations of how sailing works - you don't get that sort of thing outside of textbooks, save perhaps for Hornblower or Aubrey-Maturin novels! A couple notes you might want to double-check about the cannon loading procedure: -The blocking of the touch-hole isn't to stop sparks from getting in the barrel, it's to block airflow. When the wet sponger gets plunged into the barrel to kill remnant sparks, you don't want anything flaring back to life with air intake from the touch-hole, especially as the tool is withdrawn. -It is a minor detail, but according to William Mountaine's "Seaman's Vade-Mecum: Defensive War by Sea" (https://tinyurl.com/3aradmu4 - last owner date of this copy marked 1798) on pages 98-100, it walks through the drill of the Great-Guns and specifically indicates that there are two wads inserted into the gun during manual firing: one atop the cartridge, onto which the round is rammed, and then that round is followed by another wad, viz: cartridge|wad|shot|wad. Again, though, the most minor of quibbles with what is truly and exemplary video! Cheers!

Fantastic video, Toby! Lord Admiral Nelson would be proud of this achievement showcasing Victory's and her Crew's service and life. Well done. The success of the first HMS Victory guide, now having over One Million views and the always great World War One 2021 Re-edit rocketing towards 15 million views is a testament to the quality of your work Toby. This guide to Britain's Naval past will become a definitive documentary for those fortunate enough to find it. I am ecstatic at the thought the new Napoleon series coming. I am sure they will be massive hits as well. ~Tom

Amazing video as usual. Been waiting on this one for a while and it did not disappoint. I can't help but wonder if we missed a great opportunity to dive deep into the Battle of Trafalgar though. If the topic arises, I will surely vote for it. Thanks again for the fantastic work!

I was 20 years old when I first experienced combat (on land) and bare no shame in admitting that it was utterly terrifying. I cannot even begin to imagine how those Midshipmen and ship's boys must have felt when that drum sounded the crew to action...? Let's just hope the orphans were well fed and cared for by their older peers. Thanks yet again for another masterpiece, gents! Fascinating from start to finish...

Ian Simpkins

Incredible work as always. Thank you Epic History!

Stuart Carver

So much awesome detail here. Hard life not one that I’d have enjoyed I reckon. When you go through the nationalities of the crew shouldn’t it be United States of America not just America which is a stricter geographical term? Also Africa is a continent not a country so it should surely either be the exact country or added to the unknown nationalities?

Daniel Costa

It was so worth the wait, such a fascinating topic. Thank you for doing these two videos! And the production value and details were incredible.

Simon

Lovely as always! Looking forward to the Italian campaign

Austin Lange

That’s a lot of Williams on the ship’s roster

RiseofArn

this is really intresting. Cant wait for part 3

RiseofArn

the navy runs on two things. A steady supply of Grog and new Williams for the gun crews

Jan Smigiel

Huge respect. Remarkable video!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yes, they started them young in the navy..

EpicHistoryTV

Glad you liked it, but that's the end of our HMS Victory mini-series. We might return to cover some of the battles in detail at a later stage..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart, glad you enjoyed it! The 'countries of origin' are as given by the crew themselves. As you point out, they're not all technically 'nationalities', but it's all the info we have.

EpicHistoryTV

Very glad you enjoyed it! Thank you. Interesting points, and I did consider both of them. Regarding air flow, yes that's correct, but as I understand it the greater concern was the risk of sparks being sucked in with the air, via the vent, when the sponger was withdrawn. Air alone should not have been a danger after the barrel had been sponged. Regarding wadding after the charge but before the shot, yes this was in the instructions but rarely done in battle, for greater speed. So I skipped it for the same reason! Both these points were vetted and amended by the curators at HMS Victory.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Tom! Very kind words. I have been very pleasantly surprised by the popularity of such a detailed video about naval history.

EpicHistoryTV

Although unfortunately - YouTube has just informed me that the WW1 video will be age-restricted, which effectively kills it off! It's this unpredictability that makes support from yourself and others on Patreon so important. Time for the 2022 Re-edit, and starting again from zero,

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Daniel! I steered clear of the battles, because I would want to cover them in detail in separate videos. I am actively thinking of how/when to make this happen...

Tom Vansel

That is absolutely awful about the WW1 re-edit video. Absolutely awful of YouTube to do so as well. That incredible video has be up for over a year and only now is it flagged What probably triggered YouTube for the 2021 Re-Edit may have been this image of the Human remains from the Battle of Verdun at: 35:12 of the video. Since YouTube is so unpredictable and unnecessarily fastidious, I am worried for this new video's future, the image of a Sailor being stabbed with a sword at: 18:55 may bring out the YouTube censors, since they appear to be in an age-restricting mood. Thank you again for your hard work Toby, it is appreciated by us Patreons! ~Tom

Just joined Patreon for this, having caught the first on YT. This HMS Victory series has me utterly hooked. I really like it, everything is perfect, from the information, the visuals and audio. Is there any way we can get more Royal Navy/Imperial Era naval content? The detailed description of how the ship is run and organised is so interesting. I'm about to head out to my local bookshop to see if we have any good naval history books I can buy. Thanks for this.

Mac McCormick

I thoroughly enjoyed both videos on HMS Victory and naval warfare during the Napoleonic era. I've read extensively on naval warfare from WW1 on, but very little before - now I want to read more about naval warfare during the age of sail. Many Thanks!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you AJ, and great to have your support! Would definitely like to cover more aspects of the naval war, probably some of the specific battles in detail next, so stay tuned..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Tom. Yes will have to remove that and a few other images from WW1 in the next re-edit. I certainly saw images as least that shocking in my school text books!
