Dear Patrons,

Here it is - Part 1 of our new Napoleon in Italy series. This episode brings us up to speed with Napoleon's fortunes since the siege of Toulon, and covers the first dazzling weeks of his campaign in Northern Italy in April/May 1796. The climax of the video is the Battle of Lodi - in reality, not much more than a battering of the Austrian rearguard, but a key moment in Napoleon's 'personal development'!

Big thanks to PMF Productions for all their help with this one, I think you will agree they've done a brilliant job with the theatre-level maps, as well as advice and support in various other aspects of the video.

This episode features new-look credits (an old-fashioned crawler, as we call them in the biz), with the names of nearly 400 patrons.

Typos for Merch is also in effect - first person to spot one gets any item of merch from the store as a thank you.

We'll start work on Part 2 almost immediately, and report with updates soon.

This video is going to be my first experiment with a 'Live Premiere' on YouTube, at 6pm on Friday 2 December (the significance of the date will be obvious to many.) Feel free to join in and see how it goes!

Thanks again for your amazing support, and hope you enjoy the video.

"Soldiers: This is the battle you have so much desired. The victory depends upon you!” We are back in business!

Hannibal Kofoed

Just brilliant, and what a welcome to a new Napoleon series 👏

Rick Reactions

Brilliant production quality as always! I especially appreciate you giving some spotlight to people that would play important roles in the many years ahead like Suchet, Massèna and Lannes :)

Trey Tatro

I do miss some of the intense music from the first round of Napoleon, but super happy that you've returned to cover more of him. Beautifully done video, can't wait for the rest of the series

Paul Chirica

I have a problem with Vimeo, not allowing access.

Luca Schneider

Such an Epic video. Glad to watch Napoleon and his amazing inspirational leadership abilities on the screen again.

Robin Wong

This is incredible work. Top animation and storytelling. I wouldn't complain if this channel spent most of its future on the Napoleonic Wars. Thank you! Proud to be a patron!

Andy Meakin

wow so good - as always from this channel - exceptional work working through all the coalitions at present with friends - these resources are fantastic

Chirag

Bloody brilliant!

Jordy Botello

Absolutely brilliant - Can't wait for the next.

EpicHistoryTV

Hopefully fixed now? Seems to be working for others after initial hiccup, may need to refresh/clear some cookies? Let me know if you still can't access.

Henrik Granängen

Been waiting eagerly for this and it was as brilliant as I had hoped for, thank you! Be sure of many views from me on the Youtube version also!

Rebellican

great work, though, one nit pick, idk if im actually correct, would the Austrian emperor have been referred to as Emperor of Austria at this time, I thought Austria wasnt an empire until after the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire.

t1

Once again the quality is unmatched. This was absolutely brilliant. Thank you Toby

Tyler Rigdon

Worth every day of waiting!!! Thank you Toby!

Paul Chirica

It's fixed. Thank you for the advice and for the excellent job you do with the production of the series!

Anders L

Great video. Is it a typo that you say colonel but it's written general at 13:10?

MarbleHit

This brings tears to my eyes, when i decided that i wanted to be a patreon the Napoleon series had ended and i wasnt sure if i would see anything new regarding this topic. Thank you Toby <3

Tom Vansel

Excellent Toby! This video is going to absolutely blow up in views!

Ethan Smith

This was awesome! Your consistent great work is amazing. Keep going Toby!

Reese Dorger

This is my favorite content. It’s awesome to hear familiar names pop up across this campaign, and knowing what to expect from them in the future, thanks to your series.

Andrew Herbst

I have been soooo looking forward to this, truly your videos are a highlight of each month for me. This video was so much fun, I loved seeing all the 'cameos' of the various soldiers that we know become Marshals or others leaders in the years to come. I was thinking what a great 'Origins' episode! Thanks for always doing such hard and amazing work!

Jerry Johnston

I will NEVER tire of Napoleon! 1 arty boi takes down army after army after army. He must have felt the determination and frustration of anyone playing Western Rome against the Huns in Attila Total War.

Stuart Carver

Awesome work as always can’t wait for the rest. At 3.38 Toulon was 3 years before not 2, and at 13.30 was the Austrian a general or Colonel? shouldn’t dego be labelled as 14-15th not just 15th?

Visvamba Nathan

love the colab with PMF! The music though usually excellently matched to the scene, feels a bit disjointed this time and the transitions are a bit sudden.

Samuel Pattinasarane

"A man called upon to decide the fate of peoples." Such swag from our petit caporal 😎

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! You are technically correct that his formal title would not have been 'Emperor of Austria' - it's more descriptive, but it's a useful shorthand and used by almost all historians of this period.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Anders! Yes, you're right, we've got in a muddle because Vukassovich was promoted general 2 weeks later! I will fix this, and am happy to award you the Typo for Merch prize! I will message you shortly.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! Regarding your queries - we're roughly comparing December 1793 with March 1794, so '2 years have passed' works for me. Yes Vukassovich is an error and will fix - he was still a colonel, promoted general in May. Dego - correct, the battle spanned two days, but we're specifically describing events on 15th. Appreciate the close attention as always!

Ian Simpkins

An absolute masterpiece. Your work takes me back to the days of watching military documentaries on the couch with my dad on the Military/History channels when I was a kid. The quality and attention to detail are unmatched. Thank you for everything you do! Cannot wait for the next installment!

Ian Simpkins

As a side note - don't hesitate to take the extra time needed to maintain quality. I'm happy to wait for as long as needed to continue to have access to this level of content :)

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Ian! Great to hear, and much appreciated.

whollibaugh

What was the reason for the change in credit style, too many patreons? The crawler itself went by too quickly and with it all mixed together I wasn't able to follow it as easily as separate slides. I prefer the older style.

Simon

MY GOD! It´s so good!

Emperor

Truly amazing. Whenever you make videos, I always expect the high quality and you never disappoint me. Vive le Empereur! Can’t wait to see Napoleon in Italy Part II!

Abdullahi Hussein

I found out about PMF productions quite early and ever since I've wanted him to collaborate with you guys simply Brilliant.

Santiago Méndez

It was amazing as always, can't wait for the next one.

EpicHistoryTV

Haha, no! I think it's easier on the eye, and quicker to edit. But feedback noted, thanks.

RiseofArn

men this is just awsome stuff

Pierre Arnaud

Thank you Toby. Really happy about this new serie on the Emperor

Janan Sutherland

Epic History! Your work brings me much much joy and satisfaction. I love your work on Napoleon, in particular. I look very much fwd to the next instalments of his campaign in Italy. Very high quality!

whollibaugh

I will say the new video is amazing and I loved the soundtrack. The music at 01:00 reminds me of my favorite episode you've ever done Belisarius: Conquest of the Vandals. I watch that video once a month.. so good

Astra Solace

I cannot wait for more future videos of Napoléon, Toby! It does seem that with each new Napoléon video, you find a way to sass up the quality! One minor nitpick with the youtube video title: it lacks a year date unlike all your other Napoléonic battle videos. Could you add the 1796 year in this video's title? Thank you and we all look forward to the next video!

Mohammed Alsaadoon

What is this "Live Premier" feature on youtube about?

EpicHistoryTV

Great to hear, thanks wholilbaugh! Yes that was a good one to make, a tornado of a campaign..

EpicHistoryTV

It's a YouTube feature that makes the release of a new video more of an 'event'. Lots of people watch the video together at the specific time of its launch, with a live chat feature, in which I participate. The video itself remains freely available on YouTube in the normal way.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Astra! Very glad you enjoyed it. The titles do need to be kept as short as possible, and I'm not sure 1796 is crucial information for this one, but I may revise in future.

James Laine

I love these, I'm hooked in this period and a huge marshal Lannes fan. My partner has even started watching them with. these videos combined with Charles Noves soothing voice....truly Epic!!

Richard Fernandes

Richard Fernandes

You Welcome Toby! Thank You as well. Great! I'll be looking forward for it. I'm sure the wait will be WORTH it! Happy New Year

SheepFace2000

Just superb quality, been sharing the channel everywhere I am. It's like the History channel of my childhood before it decided it was more fun to make up History

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Matt! And thanks for supporting the channel! Best, Toby
