I guess that specific curse was an acceptable recovery but still it would have been better to have just caught Dolohov right then and there; and made him completely expose Malfoy's plot. Hopefully he still is in a state that will be enough to convict Malfoy.

I don't get how Dolohov was left there by Volkov? Anyone that worked as a broker for assassinations would have cleaned up their loose ends. Not left him alive to potentially get caught and rat him out. That's the type of stupid thing no one in that type of role would ever do. The idea of a curse that feeds off of a person's magic fading after a few weeks also sounds fairly poor. As they do have bloodline curses in that world. Something that feeds off of magic should at least stick around until the person dies.

Dolohov is excellent villain. Most likely, he will kill Lucius Malfoy.

I think the purpose of the curse is to drive him mad to do something stupid. For example, kill Lucius Malfoy or target one of the people he believes to be responsible for his pain. He cannot attack Harry or Apolline, so he will target his former allies.
