Code switching is when a person of colour talks with their common slang or common accent, but then to be taken seriously by (usually) white people they have to switch to a more white sounding type of talking. Because of racism people think how they naturally speak makes them automatically dumb, unprofessional, inappropriate etc. When really it’s no different than any accent. A British person isn’t automatically seen as uneducated because they have a British accent or because they say loo instead of bathroom, and it’s because stereotypically British people are white. It’s not because you change your fake accent depending on who you talk to. I don’t swear or use tiktok slang around my dad or my boss, that’s not code switching it’s just being an adult. Code switching is specific and it’s due to racism.
