A chemical imbalance in the brain occurs when there's either too much or too little of certain chemicals, called neurotransmitters, in the brain. Mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. So yes, one can in fact have a chemical imbalance in their brain, when not on drugs.
