Rick and Morty VS D&D launched last week and the response has been insane. Tons of wonderful messages and reviews. Retailers reporting sell-outs all over the place. All of us on the team are thrilled with how it's going.

So, how does this work? Every co-writing situation is a bit different and R+M VS D&D is its own beast in the same way working on Conan-Red Sonja and Avengers: No Surrender was.

Pat and I jammed back and forth over email for several weeks. Pat put together a "mission" document about his thoughts on D&D and Rick and Morty that really told me he and I had simpatico thoughts on what made the two properties great. I won't post the whole thing here (since that's his content), but I will include this crucial excerpt:

---

People think Dungeons & Dragons is about killing monsters and gaining treasure. But it isn't. It's about characters and their relationships. It's about collaborative narrative. It's about stories.

People think Rick and Morty is about mad science and ultra-violence. But it isn't. It's about characters and their relationships. What makes Rick and Morty special is that it's a heart-wrenching and earnest story about broken people trying to love each other.

---

That's really the core of it. This mini-series isn't just about slapping the veneer of D&D on top of Rick and Morty, it's about drilling down into the heart of both properties and using the crossover to say something interesting about both of them.

Pat's a prose writer, so once we had the broad story outline worked out he wrote reams of scene ideas and dialogue that I plugged into my own page structure, making sure it would be something Troy could actually draw in the panels, then tweaking to make it all run smooth and hit our page count.

Attached is the full script for issue #1 so you can see how the formatted comic script version Troy worked from came together and compare it to the published issue.

Here's the series on comiXology:
