Working with Marvel and the Disney Imagineering team to expand the mythos of the Journey Into Imagination attraction from Epcot into a full fledged graphic novel was a wonderful experience. I went into the project unsure of how difficult the Disney approval process would be and was pleasantly surprised at how much the Imagineers let me forge ahead and build new concepts and characters to give the concept appropriate conflict, character development, and bombastic action with an imaginative steampunk flare.

Disney fans responded very positively and the series went through multiple printings (4 prints of issue #1, 3 printings of #2, and 2 printings of issues 3, 4, and 5). When the hard cover collection sold really well (and is still available at several gift shops in Disneyworld and Disneyland), I was asked to develop a sequel.

Attached to this post is the revised story outline, character descriptions (including some visual ref to inspire the art team), and the full script for issue 1 for you to read.

The story did change a bit from outline through to the final printed page, including the name of the school and the inclusion of a dream being named Improv who didn't end up fitting with everything else we needed to cover. If I'm lucky enough to be asked back for a third FIgment story I'm hoping to include Improv then. Fingers crossed.

Hi Jim great stuff here. Do you use any other outlining methods to organize your ideas? The outline of story beats for each issue is very helpful. Also how do you approach planning out a longer story line like Thunderbolts?

Jim Zub

Thunderbolts is my first ongoing monthly superhero title at Marvel, so it's been a learning experience in terms of how much I'm able to plan ahead of time and what aspects need to be adjusted month to month based on changing plans happening in the Avengers office. Once Issue #12 is out I'll post up the overall series pitch I submitted to get the gig and a more detailed story breakdown of issues #1-3 that I put together early on to make sure everything was approved before I started scripting.
