Sigh. So so much. I want to just word vomit on you. In my previous life I was a cultural historian that examined how the treatment of women in traditional societies was impacted by changes in the law and over time. But I’ll spare you! 🤣 Did I mention that I’m a nerd’s nerd? But…you’re totally right about the jokiness. In later seasons, they find a perfect balance, but here not so much. I think that if it had been done later, it would have been so much better even though many fans see it as a total write-off. But, who knows. The covering the face bit imo was an early attempt to point out how grossly vain the Goauld are, esp female ones. Remember how Apophis evaluated Share with the whole teeth thing. 🤮

Yeah I agree, too soon and wrong environment. But yeah about Apophis, I remember I think that if they just expanded on that part more the episode would’ve been a lot better. Knowing how controlling the Goauld are from what I’ve seen I just can’t fathom covering them as a good enough deterrent especially if they’re going from gate to gate looking for bodies. Like in the first episode, but someone mentioned that even the show director/writer doesn’t like the episode and advises to skip it lol.

Thankfully there’s good episodes coming up, and I think you may get at least one thing off your wish list…

The idea for the episode was good, but it was let down by the writing and directing. They really did gloss over the 'Demons' being the Goa'uld. Sam being the butt of a joke didn't land well either. While there was an era during the Mongol & Mughal empires that had women treated like chattel and there was other slavery going on, the way this episode treated it was a bit self righteous - as if America doesn't have its own history of abusing humans for all kinds of reasons! Having Carter win and change cultural perceptions on the surface is a nice touch, but the presentation veers too closely to the White Savior trope (an indigenous people couldn't possibly change and save themselves). Badly thought out. Probably would have been better if the Writers acknowledged how women were mistreated in American history, and what changes happened and how to give this tribe ideas to enact themselves.

Exactly!!! Very well said. They leaned too much into the mistreatment of women for the benefit of men. They should’ve expanded on the fact that they were covered because of the “Demons”. I really feel like if they actually had the women in a secret place that they couldn’t leave, and then SG-1 came and like convinced them that it was safe for them to let the woman come out of hiding, that would’ve been better. It wouldn’t have made it about this culture being misogynistic but actually that they were trying to protect the women (which they stated was why).
