Hello, friends, and welcome to today's most special tech update!

One of the most common questions is whether Star Periphery will ever get animations. My answer was always the same: "I am learning how to animate, and I would like to have animations in the game one day."

Well, I have been tinkering around for a while, and now I can also add that animations might be in the game sooner than expected!

Obviously, as you can see from the tiny (it's actually quite huge) teaser above, it is very basic, rather rudimentary, and frankly just bad. But it is moving, and it is most certainly the start of something fantastic. Especially since my models are nearly finished and thus ready for animation!

To show you a little bit more (and also finally give you a bit of that sense of thiccness!), I have made some 360 views of some of the main cast. Since Patreon does not allow embedded videos other than the one above, you will have to click on each link manually. You'll be taken to my Dropbox folder, where you can check the videos!

For Iris' 360 turntable animation, click here.

For Markala's 360 turntable animation, click here.

And for Tessa's 360 turntable animation, click here.

Alternatively, you can check the folder here!

Now, how will that work for Star Periphery?

Once ready, I will start implementing animations gradually. First, the main cast's static figures will be upgraded to their animated counterparts, including simple breathing, basic emotions, etc. In the second iteration, I will be adding selected simple animated backgrounds. In the final iteration, I will be adding spicy animations to selected scenes.

Again, I have no idea when that time comes, but expect more reporting about animations in future Tech Updates!

That's it for today! I hope you enjoyed these little snippets of the future!

And just like always, if you have any questions, suggestions, or ideas, do not hesitate to let me know!

You're at the animations now?! I feel like you're just spoiling us.

tanktreads

is the bad animation on some other post?

TheFreakinPope

You already made most visual novels look lesser in my eyes and you're going even further

Redanimator

hope we get animated bj or butts soon hot

I am very much looking forward to the animations, but... and this might sound weird, but I hope you use them sparingly, for certain scenes to have extra oomph, you know? I say this, because I don't know much about animation, other than it is incredibly timeconsuming. Don't get me wrong, I think that animated scenes would be awesome, I'm just worried about scope creep and burnout for a big project like this. Sorry if it feels like I'm being harsh or downplaying your progress, because I think your work is incredible, and the promise of animation is HUGE!

VoidPilgrim

Oh, it is not weird at all; this is a very rational and valid concern! It is also something I am thinking about. Even from the few learning sessions I had, the animation is clearly time-consuming. Not as much as I expected, but the difference is still tangible, especially in rendering times (simply put, minutes for a still, hours for animation) I am very aware of the limitations of one-person dev "team." And I most certainly won't be able to animate everything or even the majority of the game; the animations will be used to underscore certain scenes and/or their segments, just like you said. If there is extra time, I will be animating; if not, then it is the good old tried way!

Jesper Rasmussen

Ok, thank you very much for the answer Void! Keep on rocking on :D

Samu 2000

same thing here my friend i dont think these animation are necessary, don't get me wrong they are beautifull but i am already good with your 3D which aready more than good enough to me, and also worried about the stress and time consuming this will take from you, so please reconsidere this if someone else agree with me put a heart here or you void create a poll to vote for animation or not

Flyguy

Who knew a simple cock twitch could have such an affect. ;)

shleefin

That animation wasn't bad at all! I'd say it was pretty good actually. I'll echo others' sentiments though that full animated scenes are not necessary. Your game already has great static art and scene writing, which is enough for me.

VoidPilgrim

No worries, Samu! One, it is a LONG way to go before I can start rolling out animations I consider good. And two, no matter what improvements I come up with in these updates, they all serve to complement the core of the game that is already pretty much set in stone. I know what people like about Star Periphery, and I am not planning on changing that formula. And this applies to the time limitations as well; I wouldn't be considering anything that would hurt the development!

VoidPilgrim

The animations can always translate the size and weight of the thing quite efficiently!

Samu 2000

very well, you are the creator, your words are final, be well my friend

Osk0

Adding animations is absolutely huge. The rate you've manage to evolve this game is incredible and only makes me more confident in what's to come.

goDEVILvw

Dang dude, you are really doing great work here! I feel I should say, as cool as animations would be, this game is already top tier with static images and the writing. Thanks for putting in so much effort, it really shows!

steevejo

Thank you void, but the fact that the model you shared of Tessa and the blue giant were both clothed, is simply a crime 😭😭

VoidPilgrim

Haha, don't worry; there will be plenty of chances to see them both in their glory!

Was checking the comments for this. If you use it to emphasize certain things I think something what I already see as uber-amazing and wasn't expecting at all can elevate a scene quite tremendously. So if you think that short animation is "bad" I think it is good enough that you can make it work. Just summon your inner anime god and only use them to focus on a certain emotion/(throbbing) feeling you want to really hammer home. You are improving constantly, just bonk your inner perfectionist every now and then to make a timestamp of your animation skills and implement what you think is good enough. Just tiny little things.
