I said it before, but season 2 is an absolute banger! Choosing between it and S1, S3 and the movies is tough, but something about S2 is peak. :-D And watch out for special credits, I can't remember how many are in S2 but they are all worth the watch. :-)

Season 1 Kaguya would never have celebrated his birthday without an ulterior motive. Although the anime itself jokes that the relationship was restarted and progress was lost at the end of season 1, we see that this wasn't the case. Then in the last segment about the plan involving Chika, I interpret it as Ice Queen Kaguya taking control as compensation for all the permissiveness she showed the others, but she eventually failed to maintain her composure to stick to the plan and the others regained control.

Theres some interesting things with the ending this season. Small things change over the course of the season. Nothing crazy but fun little things to look out for

I’m obsessed with how consistent is the character writing in this series: you noted how Kaguya often has the upper hand because she always plans far ahead while Shirogane doesn’t. That’s not by chance: we learned in S1 that Kaguya is a very rich natural genius, so she doesn’t need to work and she doesn’t need to study much; by contrast Shirogane has to study like a madman to claim his top spot in the school and he has to work on top of that since his family isn’t well off. Because of that Kaguya has much more free time to make her strategies and plan far ahead, but the flip side of that, as we saw in this episode, is that Shirogane is much better at improvising and thinking on his feet, a skill he had to develope by necessity, while Kaguya falls apart the moment her plans fail.
