I think this episode set up the season pretty well, I'm looking forward to seeing who that scary smile person is and I wonder if this locust plague is in fact a coincidence or if that faction is still working against the emperor and somehow increased the chances of it happening to show the people what a bad omen it was to eliminate the Shi clan

"Yue" means "moon" in Chinese. I think you can probably guess what the emperor meant when he said, "It is time for Yue to choose a flower." It's a great setup for light novels 5 and 6. I'm looking forward to this season! The movie is unrelated to the light novels; it's a new original story by the author that takes place between seasons two and three.

That makes for a puzzling release schedule of S3 and the movie then!

For Lishu, don't forget the concubines are in the rear palace as a political tool, a pawn, for their powerful families scheming within the imperial court. Lady Gyokuen becoming the empress consort means the other concubines/families have "lost the race", at least for the time being. I assume Gyokuen is in even greater danger than ever now ...

I'm finally getting caught up on this series, so maybe you say something about this in a later episode, but I'm getting big opium trade vibes from the start of this season; While medicinal use already existed, it was the East India Company that brought recreational use trade to China in the 17th & 18th centuries. The goal was to ease the trade defiticit (for teas & spices) but it created a massive crisis. There's a lot more nuance to it, but I'm no expert so only sharing my limited understanding.
