I really enjoyed your reaction! Michael and Inde absolutely killed these roles, and wow... what a movie. I'd like to share my thoughts on it if u don't mind 😭 Sorry in advance for the essay One thing I kept thinking while watching your reaction is that I think the movie really wants us to separate the real Nikki from the entity that takes over after Bear makes the wish. To me, they're completely different. The real Nikki is still conscious the entire time, she's just trapped inside her own body, which is why every time she manages to break through, she's immediately begging for help, saying "it's not me," hurting herself, or trying to get Bear to understand what's happening. Even the phone call stood out to me. The mysterious customer service guy literally asks, "Would you like to speak to the real Nikki?" and then all we hear is her screaming. That's why I don't think she wakes up at the end confused about everything that happened. I think she watched all of it happen through her own eyes and just couldn't do anything to stop it, which honestly made the movie so much more disturbing for me. I also think that's why there's been so much discussion online about whether Bear or Nikki is the bigger victim. I honestly think they both are, but in completely different ways. Bear is a victim of his own decision, while Nikki is a victim of Bear's decision. I don't think Bear ever made that wish expecting any of this to happen, or even believing it would come true. But after Nikki got back into his car that same night and started acting differently, and he looked back at the One Wish Willow, I couldn't help but feel like part of him knew. Maybe he didn't want to admit it to himself, but I think deep down he knew his wish had something to do with it. From then on, every choice he made felt like he was choosing the version of Nikki that loved him over the real Nikki who was suffering inside. The scene that completely changed how I saw Bear was when the real Nikki finally broke through and begged him to kill her. She would literally rather die than stay trapped inside her own body forever, and instead of hearing what she's saying, his response is, "What's so bad about being with me?" That line genuinely made my heart sink. I still felt bad for him because I don't think he ever wanted this to happen, but at that point I couldn't stop seeing him as the tragic villain. Even when he finally had proof that Nikki was suffering, he selfishly still couldn't let go because he wanted to believe this version of her was real. That's also why, when you asked, "Bear wish was for Nikki to love him. Is that good or bad?" my answer was immediately that it's bad. The second someone's free will is taken away, it isn't really love anymore. And I think the movie reinforces that when the real Nikki tells him, "I've never been with you, Bear." That line hit me because she's basically telling him that the person he's been with this whole time isn't actually her. It's the thing his wish created. I think that's also why I saw Bear hurting Nikki in ways that aren't as obvious physically. At one point you asked what Bear actually did to hurt her, and to me, that's the entire tragedy of the movie. His wish is what trapped her in the first place. Then when she finally gets a chance to beg him to end it, he can't do it because he's still holding onto the version of her that loves him. Even the phone call is heartbreaking because he has the chance to speak to the real Nikki, and instead he hangs up. Whether it was out of fear or denial, I think he knew what she was going to say. I totally understand why people feel so bad for Bear because I do too. He's a really tragic character. But I think that's what makes the movie so heartbreaking. The more I thought about it afterward, the more I realized I felt worse for Nikki because she never had a choice. She spends the entire movie trapped inside her own body watching everything happen, and to me that's the real horror lol Thanks for reacting to and sharing your thoughts on this film! I'm so used to just watching your Cortis reactions so this was a fun twist 😂

First of all Zo, thank you for the super long comment, I loved reading it!! Sorry I'm getting to this a bit late, I wanted to make sure I understood exactly what you were saying and I even had the same discussion with friends who loved the movie. I think this right here proves even more so why I love the Horror genre so much; because we get to dissect the story and its underlining themes in a way that's so interesting and interpersonal. If this were a drama - and let's face it, without the horror aspects it very well is a drama - it would've been played straight. We would have been given everything we needed and I think everyone's perspectives and conclusions would have met at the same exact place. With all that said - I agree with you. I actually felt terrible reading your comment, because I started thinking "Omg yes....Zo makes so much sense, yes!......but wait....omg now it looks like I was defending him, eeeek 😅" In a sense I was; I understood Bear's emotions towards Nikki because every single one of us has crushed hard on someone in varying degrees and despite how we've all been conditioned to follow societal norms and structures, we're still primal creatures driven by desire. Bear was driven by desire. I think the part that a lot of people take issue with his character is....how he just allowed being with Nikki after the wish came true and the spell fully took over her mind and body. THAT is a major issue, because she is basically a slave to his wishes (literally lol). She doesn't have control of her own mind and body and therefore cannot make any decisions for herself. At least, not in a way that benefits herself. Every decision she makes is to serve HIM. And it's because Bear didn't just sit back and allowed all that to happen with a giant smile on his face like "That’s right, I'm the King of the World now and you're gonna do everything I say 😏😤" - I read it as someone who genuinely believed Nikki liked him back and the wish he made just happened to be a silly coincidence. He searches online to see what others were saying about the One Wish Willow and got mixed reviews (that’s so real 😂), so I felt it was portrayed as him brushing it off. But that's why the film is so brilliant. So simple, yet so brilliant. Because it begs the question: when did he know? When did Bear fully understand and accept that the wish he made was a spell cast on her and that it was actually real? Because there's not believing it's real/not knowing - then there's knowing/believing it was real. And what he does after accepting its real matters. Which is why I sound crazy for defending him because he did try seeking help/advice and tried was very transparent to his friends - and Nikki herself - how weirded out he was with her behaviour. When Bear calls the help line and hears Nikki screaming on the phone, I misunderstood what that meant. I thought it was the customer service guy trying to taunt and scare Bear. So it didn't occur to me that what we heard was the real Nikki and her screaming was her internal self fully aware of everything happening but has absolutely no control of her body. TERRIFYING STUFF. I agree that both characters are tragic. And the movie ends with neither one of them getting a good ending. Which also got me thinking... What happens next? I made a joke with a friend and told him Psycho 2 is the trial after everything that went down in the first movie, so maybe Obsession 2 could be the trial and Nikki trying to prove her innocence 😭😭😭 Like, HOW? How does she explain to the police what happened?? How does she get them to believe that it wasn't really her...I mean, it was but it wasn't lol. It also started getting me to think of mental illness and how someone's lawyer would have to defend their client for doing something terrible with the fact they’re mentally ill. I feel like it's the same concept. Crazy!! I need to watch some interviews with the direct and cast to see what they’re saying about all this lol. I did read that Michael Johnston disagrees with his character Bear, so there's that 😅 Loved the movie, and I'm happy you loved it, too!! Thank you so much for watching, Zo! What should we watch next??

Aww, thank you for taking the time to read all of that 😭 I completely agree with what you said about horror. I think that's why I love it too. Everyone walks away with a different interpretation, and it's so fun hearing everyone's perspectives. I also really like the question you brought up: when did Bear actually know? I think that's probably the biggest question the movie leaves us with, and where someone draws that line changes how they see his character. Also, the idea of an Obsession 2 is hilarious because ugh imagine trying to explain that to the police. 😭 Thanks again for such a great discussion. These are honestly my favorite kinds of horror movies because the conversation somehow lasts longer than the movie itself !
