I used to think the same thing about Steve; that he was a pompous jerk, and he can definitely come off that way at times. in this episode, though, I got a different feeling from him. as with all the other kids, he was deeply affected by what happened in that house, and the personality he's developed as an adult is a way of coping with it. the way he copes is by denying that it's real and passing it off as a mental illness. especially as we see more of Steve as a kid, I started to feel bad for the child version of him who lost his mother and never got any answers. granted, I know that the dad had a very good reason for keeping certain things from them at the time, but it doesn't hurt any less knowing that. especially now, after seeing the entire series, I feel nothing but love for Steve and the rest of the siblings. they were dealt a very bad hand and handled it the best they could, under the circumstances. I can't say I'd handle it any better, tbh.

Methadone Mile is a real place in Boston on Massachusetts Ave and Southampton St. It's part of a neighborhood where homeless junkies live on the street to either receive treatment (methadone) from some of the few clinics that line there or score their next fix. It's also next to a men's homeless shelter and women's shelter.
