sorry for the long comment you're about to read but wanted it to be as detailed as possible! so regarding your question if kassidi could have bipolar, as much as i'm not a mental health expert, i wouldn't agree. my mum works in mental health & i have a lot of friends with both bipolar disorder & borderline personality disorder, and on this rewatch i'm considering that kassidi could have bpd (which is frequently confused with/misdiagnosed as bipolar, especially in women). this is just my personal analysis of her character & i have no mental health qualifications, just a LOT of knowlege on this topic lol. bpd has 9 diagnostic symptoms, with 5 required for diagnosis (long standing & affecting many areas of your life). imo kassidi clearly has: 1. a fear of abandonment, causing her to lash out & cause fights with carl, 2. unstable relationships, this is obvious from what we've heard with her parents & also her relationship with carl, 3. extreme mood swings - (these last hours/days, rather than in bipolar disorder, where manic episodes have to last at least 1 week, depressive episodes have to last at least 2 weeks & hypomanic episodes (in bipolar type 2) have to last at least 5 days), 4. explosive anger & 5. impulsive self destructive behaviours e.g. running away from home, hypersexuality, picking constant fights with carl etc. other symptoms include unstable sense of self, self harm behaviours, feeling empty, & paranoia/dissociation bpd is one of 9 personality disorders & is is typically characterised by frequent mood swings (throughout the day with external triggers like breakups, grief etc), unstable sense of self & a history of trauma, whereas bipolar disorder is a mood disorder & tends to have a genetic predisposition combined with an external trigger. episodes in bipolar disorder have to last longer due to the diagnostic criteria & have higher rates of psychotic features (bipolar 1 often includes hallucinations & delusions, like ian has in s5). it should also be said, however, that bpd is diagnosed a lot in women, as is considered to probably be overdiagnosed where actually autism, adhd, ptsd or other conditions may actually be the cause, as historically a lot of our neurodevelopmental & mental health research has gone into male patients, so bpd may be lazily overdiagnosed in women. however, i do think kassidi's character was written to be bpd coded. just my opinion! but i hope this info is somewhat helpful, & i know it's pretty accurate as i have a lot of knowledge due to my family & personal experience with people in my life experiencing these, so i've done a lot of research. bipolar & bpd are often confused & when people think of bipolar, imo they're actually thinking of the classic bpd symptoms, because of how bipolar misrepresented in media/popular culture etc. which is why i think the way shameless has portrayed ian & monica's bipolar has been soooo important. i'll leave some links to some more info below if you're interested, i think it's always good to know a bit about these kinds of things as i'm sure you will come across people & have no idea they live with these conditions. bipolar disorder- https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/bipolar-disorder/ bpd - https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/borderline-personality-disorder/overview/
