Hey guys, just a quick post on my recent photobox experiment. I decided to do this because I wanted to test shooting in a different environment for once as well as maybe have some flexibility to change my back drop.

I was particularly interested to see if my light box set up was baked into "Saint-ism style" or whether I could utilise other backdrops etc and how it would impact my style.

Anyway I decided to pick up the following lightbox from Amazon

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07TYCH18N?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

I will post a proper review later, but basically the booth collapses into itself in a packed state and mine arrived broken. It could still stand up but I am going to return it.

What I liked

The colors definitely look very nice and much more vibrant compared to my normal booth.

What I didn't like

The front door of the booth needs to be closed in order to get the best lighting. When the door is closed, low angle shooting becomes impossible. You could also maybe compensate with an additional front light, but I didn't have time to test this.

Being the collapsible version, the booth isn't particularly rigid. The bottom of the booth is pretty much cloth so you will need to put it on a hard surface to use properly. There is an optional support bar you can put at the bottom, but with this on there will be a slight bump in the bottom depending on where you install it.

Overall

I will probably be sticking with my old lightbox for the time being, I like the colors on the new one though so I'll be seeing if I can upgrade my lighting set up so that I can get something similar.

Examples

Below are some examples I manage to take before packing it up. Let me know what you guys think! (Pictures are unedited). Keep in mind for the new booth, I am only using the included 2 LED strips with no additional lighting.

Photo in the new booth with front door OPEN

This was my first shot in the new booth, I left the front door flap open and I immediately noticed how dark the shadows on the front and undersides were.

Photo with the door closed

When the front door of the booth is closed you get light bounce from the front so the lighting is more balanced. The door isn't right at the bottom of the front flap, so this was the lowest angle I could shoot from.

My normal booth, but I borrowed the backdrop from the new booth

Your normal booth + new backdrop appears have better shadow control which I liked. It almost looks it is floating. Cheers for the tip.

The other backdrop is thin PVC(?) plastic and is probably better at bouncing the light than the cloth which absorbs. I'll probably use my old set up for Gunpla and change backdrops as needed for musume shoots or when I'm shooting dark kits. Meanwhile I'm going to try upgrade my lights so I can get better colors like the closed booth version.
