Thoughts on Discord (Patreon)

^Title!

I wanted to get some input on a possible discord channel for patreon, art, streams, and general hanging.

Anyone have any experiences with this type of stuff?

I know a few who say it's alright, and some say it gets a little hectic sooo I'm curious to see if it's something that could potentially happen.  The one thing I wanted to know is what you guys thought — and are any of you guys a part of one? Any good/bad experiences to come from it? 

Not sayin' it's a thing yet, but it's on the table for sure. PM me or comment if you have any input!

I think it would be a good idea I’m a part of a couple of servers all of them art community ones and so far had no negative experiences on any of them

I'm in a fair few servers and I'm really enjoying it. Most of mine are pretty small and focus on certain hobbies I'm in and I've never had any issues. (It helps that you can mute channels you're not interested in and stuff. :P) I'd be very down for a Discord server! I'm not in enough art-related ones.

I think it’s a good idea, I have been at few of those Discord servers for art and group chats. And it’s been good so far for me.🙂

I'd definitely go on it, it connects people and I'm also updated on art stuff which is sweet!

Discord Channels can be chaotic, especially if not moderated correctly. Things can get out of hand quickly if one or two folks become problematic. I definitely suggest keeping it small, if you do decide to do one, and get someone you are comfortable with to help keep things in order.

I've been in plenty. Theres a big community depending on how many people you let in and it can get pretty fun if you know em really well. The best advice I can give is research into setting up channels and NSFW channels, rules, guidelines etc etc. Open voice chats, locked voice chats. Moderators and admins. The most annoying thing is notifications popping off, but thankfully you can mute certain channels and have it be ok. Definitely do recommend it for a good social time though

Mm, I usually mute channels unless it's directed @ me or @ everyone kinda dealy. I generally check into the ones I'm a part of on my own accord but from the most part mine have been extremely chill. The only super extreme one I've ever been on was the lackadaisy server when I was a part of her patreon and that was nuuuuts, though I don't think mine would ever escalate that largely. I think I can limit invites too if it gets too much. I was considering a general art channel and a NSFW art channel (on the same server) one for like, a spot to find my art and perhaps another where everyone can upload their own, critique each other? Idk though! Seems like it could be fun, yeah!

There was one I was apart of that did get pretty hectic. I have no qualms giving problematic people the boot haha. Should probably have a 'rules' section for convenience sake

Same here, I'm in only a couple art ones myself and a couple other random ones that are fairly small. I think if everyone has similar tastes (furry art sfw/nsfw) it could be a decent server haha.

You definitely want some kind of rules section so people know how to behave and what you'll boot them for. Gives you a good reference for if someone whines about getting kicked. There was a fan one made for EA, and it spiraled out of control pretty quickly. I made some good friends out of it though! But, I'd never personally host another one myself. (Dealing with my BFs is enough, but those guys are all great)

This sounds like a great idea. I have another streamer I follow that uses it as sort of a hub for his followers and it works great.

Honestly it's just another chat/app that is muted OR that dies off and no one uses. It's a good idea, but it does spread attention thin when you're already in 4-5 or more. For me email is still the most direct method as it notifies of events and not just every little 'lol'

I'll say having been a part of many both in and out of the fandom it can get veeeery time consuming/demanding (more even than twitter) There is a lot of potential for interaction with members between you and themselves but unless the person running the server is everpresent it can fade fairly quickly (since most people who join would want to interact with you) And things can get out of control really fast if rules aren't enforced. While I'm not sure how many would join I think it's safe to say you'd have a couple hundred to a thousand people interested if you opened one so you miiight need a hand managing one if you did. If you wanted to keep things there as a platform for sharing and having an open dialogue about both your art and others those tend to be a bit less....nutty XD But if you're feeling up to it and have rules/info clear Discord does indeed foster a lot of community :D

Ohhhhh. Wow this is really insightful, Pon. I think I'll send you a message about it later you seem to have been around the discord channel block by the sounds of it! I wouldn't say anymore then a couple hundred at most if it was a public server, though I don't know how many people use discord or would want to join a very art centric one. I use it all the time myself, but who knows!

I'm In many discord from fighting game tournament to art almost anything. You could make a Patreon tier on here or make it open you could make an only art channel where you post your art.

I think it could be fun, but since you got over 100 patrons, I can see it being maybe a little too big for its own good. It's worth a shot if you really wanna hear from people though. If it doesn't work out, you made the attempt and learned something haha.

If you do decide to foster one, I would say just make sure you have the direction of it down. Like, do you want it to be strictly art? Maybe a mix of art and games? etc. But, definitely have some Rules and Guidelines ready ( I think you can even limit it where people cannot access any channels when they first join for a X amount of time; like Twitch chat. I think). Also, it's nice to see a discord well organized with its appropriate channels and such. And lastly, just make sure your Mods help you enforce said rules. There's not much else to say as many others have already said it. In the end, it doesn't hurt to try.

A Discord Channel can be good or bad depending on the size of your group. It will get hectic if you have a lot of people in the group, and if your patron numbers are any indicator it will a lot; a lot of notifications that'll make you wanna mute the group thus creating the thought that you're ignoring people. Though if you want to still use it for art, streams, and general you could limit the number of people you invite to the group; the smaller the group the more manageable it could be. I'm in a small group, and it's fine (though it only has about 13 people).

I wanted to give my input, but honestly what Pon said already hit the nail on the head; Discord would be a fantastic way to interact with your supporters on a closer level than the one-on-one that Twitter provides, but if you open it up to too large of a user base, you'll quickly be overwhelmed. You DO have quite a following now, after all. If it were me, I'd begin by opening it to your Patreon pledges, just to get your feet wet, and go from there. If you find that it's not a lot of faces you can expand to your other social media followers, and if it's too crazy with the 100-ish people here then you can close down the server without closing the door on a huge audience.

There isn't much that hasn't already been said, but I just wanted to encourage thinking about what the rules would be before you open it up and starting small so you don't overwhelm yourself. I'd also recommend checking to see if there's anyone among your friends who wouldn't mind watching over the server with you. With that being said, I hope you do end up making one.

You really should make a Discord! In my opinion, it's a fun, creative way to interact with your supporters and even get new ideas from them possibly! You don't have to, I'm just suggesting. Have a wonderful day :D
