So because I work digitally, I only ever draw my faces left-facing. If the panel requires a right-facing face, I just flip the image when I'm done drawing. It's the most time efficient 'technique' for me because I literally suck so bad at drawing right-facing faces. If any of you are digital artists and face the same problem as me, maybe this might be a solution for you, ha.In this one panel today, I forgot to draw Tora while he's facing left, so I ended up with the wonky image on the right. Later I redrew him left-facing which resulted in the image on the left. Same effort, same time spent. Look at the difference 😂Anyway I just thought this is an interesting little tidbit to share. I'm not, in any way at all, beating myself up about or feeling bad about my art. Just in case you guys get worried 😋

All I’m wondering is...how is he so HAWT!

mai

Oh man, same. I draw better on the right side of the face so if I draw a left eye or something, I have to flip it 😂😂😂

Love learning about these behind the scenes tidbits! I'm also curious, and feel free not to answer if its too personal, but I'm an early bird living on the east coast. I often see you posting or responding to things when I wake up for work at 6am here (which is lovely bc it makes my mornings much more pleasant), and I have to wonder if you are a night owl who is staying up really late on the west coast, or also an early bird like me on the east coast?

It is amazing how lines on paper can evoke emotions to stir in us. Have to admit a preference for your black and white scrawled lines over the finished cleaned up versions. Something about the illusion of movement those loose lines give. interesting that drawing one direction is easier for you than the other. Think it has anything to do with being left or right handed?

Emma Lou

I call for a spin off series with derpy Tora 😂

It’s the mask Shin Ae wore to the party lol! I find it fascinating how we adapt to make the most of our skills. I wonder if people did this on paper? Draw it facing their dominant way, flip the paper and use a light board to trace it facing the other way?

Amanda McClain

This is how I learned how to use a photo editor. I can only draw something right once. So, when I create a pattern for sewing or embroidery I copy and flip the image.

It’s like I’m staring at a masterpiece. How is this man so beautiful!? The right is how all my digital drawings turn out😂😭

I mean, even my best drawing is worse than your “bad” drawing so don’t fret!!! Sometimes we’re our own worse critics, but I support artists that are *real* about their process because it’s nice to know we all start somewhere (or can’t draw left facing faces 😂) you rock, no matter what orientation you can’t draw!

Victoria Dias

HAHAHAHAHAH omg, the right one is my life rn (kind of a mess *cries*)

Kuro Mono

Lmao i was the same, something about left facing is just easier, but I have tried to fix it by practice and only flip when i need to align the eyes 😂

Eva

Very clever fix lmao!

Irene A

Very cool and fun!

I just watched the episode of The Office were Dwight cuts off the face of the CPR dummy and wears it, and I can’t stop comparing it Right Tora in my mind now 😂 I don’t say that in a mean way, but it looks like Toras features are obscured and mask-like in the right one.

Nik Ribble

OMG this is hilarious and genius! I noticed a few months back that almost all my drawings are left facing! I'll be using this tip in the future 😂

NurseAmethyst

I swear, we have the opposite issue. Lol. I can draw tons of people facing left, it's when I'm trying to make them look the other way that it sucks. Lol!!! Love your art btw!

Karen Alexander

Yeah, you can definitely tell the difference...😂😂, I can't do anything left handed, it's good to see things like this, and I'm also glad you don't mind sharing it with us, I'm the same way, I'm like you get me with all my crazy, sarcastic, imperfections, and all the other jazz I do...

tictactous

Tora on d right will give me nightmares 😂 but ur technique is so time efficient haha..

Kim Sambajon

Me too 😂 can't draw a character facing right. Unfortunately for me, since i still dont have a tool and do it manually, all my drawing are facing left hehe

DIRTYAIM

I can totally relate to this!

Gudrun

Dear Lilydusk, your drawing style is very special and it stands out from the crowd. It is more realistic and the difference between the male and female figures is clear to see what makes it so special. Unfortunately, most of them draw their figures the same, no matter if man or woman. They have no character in my eyes. Then there is mangaka, which proganoists rather resemble a caricature. Here it's hard for me to take the story seriously at all and a kiss between two caricatures seems ridiculous to me. I became your patron over a year ago, not only because there is a lot of love for detail in your story, but also in your drawing.

kari

I had never thought of that before! I'm not an artist, so I had never thought about there being any difference, but now I can see how there would be one in drawing them! Thanks for the cool insight into the artistic process!!

Hi Lily, before you started making digital comics, was it difficult to muster up courage and dedicate your time in doing them? I have a hidden passion in storytelling, but I am afraid to pursue it. Pursuing my passion feels like a far stretched dream because of my financial issues. I feel like I only can dream. xoxo

Hannah Retzer

I thought I was the only one 😭😭😂

Rose Hazard

Girl that’s working smart and efficiently!! Great techniques!

Sheila Camara

I have the same problem. I am still on the paper and pencil drawing and I am hoping to bribe the hubby for a digital drawing tablet.

Arti

I feel your pain. I have to flip images too, sometimes.
