Early sneak preview because Tora and our rubbish-tattoo boy Gyu are in uniform, and I can't wait a day longer to see everyone's response 😂🥵

(Cross posted on FP and non-FP tier)

And also, because I've been asked (with increasing frequency) what country MPL is set in, and what races the characters are, I thought I'd talk a bit about this today. I've mentioned this briefly in an old Author's Q&A I did on Webtoon, and somewhere in the comments before, but I'll post my response here with more elaboration so it's clearer for everyone.

For those who aren't aware, MPL is set in a fictional country called "Narin" (the city they're currently residing in is "Narin City", which probably makes it confusing and doesn't make much sense, and I'm sorry lol). Basically, the entire country of Narin is a melting pot of many different races/ethnicities, with a fusion of different cultural practices, beliefs, mannerisms, etc., all of which co-exist together.

To me, MPL is a story with a strong element of 'fantasy' in it, and I often like to think of it as an 'Urban Fairytale'. Sometimes, parts of the plot might border on being 'surreal' and maybe even 'otherworldly'. In-line with this, many real-world details are kept intentionally vague. Partly to add on to MPL's whimsical, fantasy-like story setting, and partly to keep readers focused on the story and character development.

MPL is also primarily a story about love, romance, and the relationships people have with each other. Which, I think, is an entire web of complexities on its own. And the MPL characters, to me, are really just people being people. I do have an idea in mind on what their races are, but at this point, it is of little relevance to the story. So I'd prefer to leave this to the readers' own interpretation <33 In short, there are no right or wrong answers to what 'race' they are, because that's not what this story is about. It's really an 'anything-goes' kind of story, basically.

As a final note, I though I'd add on that while I know the topic of 'race' is an important one to have, it's something that has been (and will be) covered beautifully, and intelligently, by authors who are much more well-versed, and better-equipped with knowledge and experience in this topic, than I am. Instead, I'd like the focus in MPL to be on everything to do with romance, love and relationships (and of course, gangs, crime, mystery, etc.) <33

Anyway I hope this clears things up for those who have been asking. And as always, thanks for reading!

GYUUUUU I have a feeling if he's probably one of Tora's only 'true friends'.

Olive S

I can see Tora's hat... His beautiful hair... His gorgeous eyes... His amasing muscles.... Hmmm wha...? Who...? Where...? His uniform???? 😳😮🤔

Rosemary Willow

Doesn't matter what Tora wears he is always like this teddy bear man roaming around (I mean he can kill you at any time) but like at least to me, I can see poppy hugging him even in the scariest of outfits or in this case .. a uniform LOL

Trychtopus

Rubbish tattoo boy 😭😭❤❤ Thank you for the clarifications and also the eye candy!! You spoil us!

Patreon is mad and keeps deleting my comment, but I’m going to try again 😂: 1. Tora and Gyu’s relationship is fast becoming one of my favorites. Gyu seems to be a man of many hats (even if Tora won’t lend him his) and I can’t wait to see how this interaction goes! The side characters in MPL seem to make their ways into our hearts so easily, and I’m sure most of us are already happy to die for Gyu. 2. I’ve always been amazed at the way you trust your readers to take away their own lessons from your characters. You have a main moral to your story of course, but each little interaction we see is vague enough for it to resonate with our own lives. The topic of race and your “urban fantasy” have always captured my attention, but you keep your characters free from being boxed into specific societal rolls, allowing us to focus instead on the micro cosmic rolls of their jobs and their relationships. It leaves our minds unburdened with having to keep up with the overarching political or cultural climate, and free to be fully absorbed in their lives at a more personal level. Hopefully my sleep filled mind makes sense here 😅 but I love this topic and I can’t wait to see more on Friday!

Tora in uniform!? 😳 Swooning!!! 😌🤤

LaRhonda Sparrow

Hiya Lilydusk! Since this is sort of related to what you posted, I figure I’d ask - do you have an accent in mind for Tora? I’ve been reading his dialogue in sort of a “tough, husky, pseudo-New York” accent but I was wondering what you had envisioned. Everyone else feel free to chime in as well! Love the story and I literally have to stop my from spending even more money to get you content!

Kristen Davis

Tora looks like a man deep in thought. Can’t wait to find out what’s going on in that beautiful head of his! And man, my heart does “badump” every time I see him now! ❤️

Annie J

I love the idea of urban fantasy and characters not being defined by their race. Everyone wants to fit everyone in a box and I much prefer to let my imagination roam free. So thank you for that. 🥰 Can't wait for more Tora-Gyu interactions, I feel that with Quincey (and Alice), they are the reason Tora didn't turn like Scharch. And uniforms??? I can't even form words. 🥵❤I am so curious, where are they going??? Are they as security guards? Will there be more scared Trevor pissing his pants and resigning??? 🤣

Jina Vargas

What a well thought out and expressive response. I really love all the thought you put into it. Only one thing though, for all the people who had the time to ponder nationality and race of comic characters, WHERE DO I GET THIS KIND OF TIME?!

Victoria Dias

Simply beautiful response 🥰 why bother about things like race when we can bother about which shampoo Tora’s using, this hair tho 🥵

Angeline

The more you tell us, the more obsessed I am with you and your storytelling methods. I love the fact that you want to focus on the people and their relationships, while letting us (the audience) make up our own minds on the world around them. You say that you would rather someone more experienced with race and culture take care of those big topics, but don’t sell yourself short, Lily — gang and violence is a huge topic that does deal with race and culture. In fact, it is a very specific culture that you are helping us dive into — and you’re doing it beautifully. You make us (or at least me) question Tora’s world which leads to realizations and questions about our own world. I honestly never thought much about the topics of gang, violence, mafia, etc. until reading this, and your attention to detail has actually helped me learn a lot about this world. However, I can appreciate that the people are what I should focus on the most. I hope this nonsense makes sense to someone, summer semester starts this morning and my teacher brain is so dead 💀 but I hope you know how genius and wonderful you are at your work, Lily. GENIUS!!!

Mykala Kearney

Thank you for this wonderfully written response. To leave it up to interpretation is a wonderful thing for everyone to be a part of. We all can express our opinions freely and not be judged for it. Love you and this wonderful story Lily! Thank you so much!

Carol

Nah home girl the real question here are we ever going to see Tora with cornrows braids? I bet he will look hot😍🤤🥵

memomamumimi

I just realized that their race never crossed my mind before just now, I've always been most curious about their voices. When reading anything I immediately equate a character's mannerisms to voice actors I'm familiar with so I guess that's why race never came to mind for me

Meruko

You lady have no idea how many times I had to explain to people that I live in Quebec City in the province of Quebec. So yeah, Narin City makes total sense to me, at least... 😂

Myosotis

First. I love this answer. I feel free to imagine everything now ! And uniforms wow

saucytuggles

Thanks for a Wednesday preview! The long march through the weekly desert is much easier today.

pdinnny

I see Tora's hair is tied back..Imma be keeping an eye out for that strawberry 🍓 😂😂

Julia G

😱 Are we gonna see Tora and Gyu break into Poppy’s work?! 🤗 I hope it’s flashbacks so we still get some Tora and Poppy time 🤩

Blueberry

Tora on janitor duty at poppy’s work place ??

Abbiline

I just arrived at work and was absolutely thinking about MPL during my 1-hour commute. (When am I not thinking about MPL nowadays? I swear, I am obsessed.) But I was just thinking about how it’s so nice that you provide us with insight into your characters and the MPL universe outside of the story. It’s like getting access to secret insider info. 😁 Anyways, I should actually work since I am at work. I just wanted to share my appreciation for your hard work, Lily!

larosamorada

Am I the only one that latched onto that tiny bit about this story having some fantasy elements? 👀👀 Been wondering when those low key super powers were gonna make their way in...of course, we saw a bit with Tora passing by Poppy at the train station. And the fact that they kept running into each other in a city likely the size of NYC. What's hiding behind those amber eyes? 🧐🧐 Also very excited to see Gyu return! Our boy looks like he's running permutations in his head about Tora's workout regimen. 🤣 Also, low key wondering when that boy sleeps. 🤣🤣

Lacey Blankenship

I'm guessing they're going to Poppy's workplace to get that notebook to try to protect her from the scary mafia dudes. I'm so concerned for all of our nice characters, especially dear Tora and Poppy. We'd love to see them safe and free, but I know it's gonna be a helluva lot more complicated and scary than that.

Olive S

How cute, Gyu has a girl's uniform! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Catalina

In my head Narin is sort of similar to London, where you can see people with so many different races and backgrounds walking together side by side, unlike some other places I've visited where I've noticed people tend to hang with other people of their same race/religion (also, the name Poppy sounded so British to me, maybe because of Remembrance Day Poppies 🤷‍♀️) so I've been using different London accents for the characters in my head. Thank you Lilydusk for allowing us to use whatever ethnicity and accent we feel more comfortable with!.

GenX

I’ve always thought that there is an Asian touch to it.

karena333

Thank you for all of your thoughtful and kind posts giving us background or letting us know what is appropriate for us readers to consider and what is "taboo" (such as the smoking comments) and not acceptable. You are a wonderful communicator and I am glad that you don't hesitate to give us guidelines. If only we all could express difficult subjects so tactfully! I for one will try to learn from you in real situations 😘 The Narin/Narin City idea makes perfect sense to me. It is kind of like the city of Singapore within the country of the same name. Singapore is a blend of nationalities with four official national languages, so this aspect doesn't seem unrealistic at all to me! And having lived in NYC and spending time in London I definitely have seen melting pots like Narin! In my mind the fantasy elements are already there within the looks and personality of Tora! He's definitely too good to be true, LOL!😍😂😂😂

Darla (Tora’s THOT)

Lily, I’m going to admit, it pulls at my heart a bit but I will respect the ambiguity of character’s races. Tora has always been Asian in my mind and always honestly- will still be, due to Asura’s Bride. I wanted to so badly have this gorgeous beast of a man represent a race that really isn’t viewed as HEART THROBS (Asian Men) and I was incredibly happy to have your representation of it. I will respect this and keep my thoughts to myself when it comes to mind. Just thought I’d let you know some reasonings of why some ppl are so passionate of who he is and what his identity is. Identity is a huge aspect in each of our lives in the first place and if the time comes where we do get to see Tora’s biological parents- I’d be extremely excited to see that.

Alex

I love that with stories ur able to keep it under your own imagination and interpretation, I think it broadens our minds and horizons a lot to be able to to chalk it all up to what our imagination sees fit. And I love stories that are very character and relationship driven, I think it makes a story super special when u care about the characters and the relationships they have together and shat they are willing to do to help each other, I think that’s what makes this story so beautiful and unique is seeing the strengths and vulnerabilities in each character and how they all are able to pick each other up and be there for eachother, which is exactly how it should be (: such a great story! Thank you lily for sharing such an inspirational, passionate story (:

Lola

Let’s talk about the real issues here, like how Tora’s clothes are barely containing those biceps. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) sorry, jk jk! Or am I? 👀

Valerie P

Either they are breaking into Goldfish publishing and we are going to flashback to what happen that night Ronzo talked about. Or this is a flashback and Tora is confessing to Poppy.

Lauren Hoover

I love your comic and I LOVE the way you handle all these situations that come up. You are so sweet and I love how you stand by your views and I support you all the way! I like to imagine what the characters would look like irl and I think Poppy would look like Rosanna Pansino and Tora would look like Lewis Tan 🤤

Amy Crumbaugh

Anyone else having The Office flashbacks? 😂 Tora in a uniform is everything I didn’t know I needed.

Léa Boyer

Whoua so cool! For a French girl like me even if I suspect Narin city to be fictional I never thought the entirety world would be! Even tough I’m always craving for le more details possible on every world creators imagine, I for once feel completely satisfied to stick with the romance universe ! Plus I love the way you describe your point of view and now I’m even more curious about those « surrealist » moments you talked about 👍🔥🥰

Bly

Omg please be the break in/notebook episode. 🤞🏻 Please please please please please please please 🤞🏻 *squeals*

ᴄʜᴀꜱɪᴛʏ

Ok, so what is tora and poppy’s enthnicity? I know you said Narin City, but can you expound a little bit more in detail, at least for the main characters?

Nicole Vogt

Has anyone found any confirmation yet about Tora & Poppy's age difference?? He's always calling her kiddo.

andrea

So excited! This series is one of the only things that make my Fridays so much better!

TeHeeJones

Narin doesn't exist in real life, but it does in my heart since that's where Tora & Poppy live 💜!!! I personally love that our characters are not defined by rice and that it's focused on other more important things that makes this story worth wild!!! Whatever race Tora is is irrelevant, he is made up of pure hotness (I do vote he has some Asian in him, which make him even more hot) 😉!!!

Bi Skull Fairy

I absolutely love this story. Why does it matter what race or ethnicity the characters are it’s about who they are on the inside. We are all just human. Thank you for sharing your story telling and beautiful art

Life is beautiful

Ah!!! You spoil us all!!! Thank you!! 2 more days to friday!!!🎉🎊

Morgs

I just want to be strangled by those big arms of his

Christina Agan

Oh what shenanigans did these two get up to? I’m assuming this is the night they broke into Poppy’s office to get the notebook.

Cynthia

This message is so important especially given the current climates we live in (or maybe it's just the USA being messy) <3 Thank you for this! Upset because I ran out of FP on the app (I managed to get it exactly zeroed out) so I'm going to need to wait a month for this episode bc I would rather support Lily here than buying Webtoon coins but it's FINE bring on the spoilers. Who knows maybe I'll cave on Friday....

Soosie

Wow I really love this point of view to the story: That the characters' race is left to the readers' interpretation. It definitely adds to the fantasy and lessens the pressure of confining the characters within certain cultural aspects of a race and ethnicity. I personally always felt that Tora was at least part asian because of his name, which means Tiger in Japanese.. and the Mandarin/Japanese character on his back that also means Tiger. (I also like that his jacket says Superman in Mandarin/Japanese 😍🔥). I've been having baby fever, so I look up name meanings quite a bit, and I love even your detail of the names! I think Narin and Narin City totally makes sense, just like New York and New York City. 😄 I'm amazed every week by Lily, very inspired every time 💖

princesahyuuga

Loved this post!!! From the illustration to the text context. It is really nice to see author point of view. This make us aware of creative process behind. ❤️

Ocean

I really thought it was Thursday after seeing the sneak peak in my email inbox 😂...Too bad its not 😭

Amyzades

Narin.... Narnia.... They're around the world....

Amyzades

Then... I wish it was MY closet... 😍😍😍

Christina Agan

So....I’m not complaining AT ALL, but Tora’s shirt looks like it’s basically painted onto him, like you know those buttons are straining. And I am living for this.

Gem

Woohoo uniforms. I can’t wait to find out more.

LS1988

Silly question: how do you pronounce Gyu?

Krystal

Tora is fine. That's all I care about. He could be a literal alien for all I care and it would change nothing. We just gon have some mixed, half black half tiger babies. Dassit. Lol I wonder if this picture is from when they go to Pop's office...

Katie

*IS SCREAMING INCOHERENTLY* I CANNOT HANDLE THIS, LILY!!! Someone send help!!!🥴😵🥵 From the absolute steamy fire that is this preview (Tora - baby - those muscles are KILLING me) to the wonderful world of Narin, your world building, story-telling, and art are thoughtful, meaningful, and wonderfully illustrative of the complex world we all inhabit and how gray the good/bad dynamic really is when it comes to human relationships and personalities. Lily, you are truly, in every sense of the word, FIRE🔥 💖

IcingQuinYang2

Doesn't matter to me, you're doing a great job. My mind creates what is with your story telling and drawings. #fangirling66

Tiffanyyyyy B

I actually love that idea! It makes it more like a fantasy story & I think I understand you much more now. In the beginning the different races reminded me of Requiem for the Phantom, they were all mixed and although they were based in America it didn't really matter where they were from. They were just awesome characters all wrapped up in a spider web like story. I have to admit though I thought they were in Poppyland 😅 guess its the country Poppyland, Narin, Narin City 🤷‍♀️🤭

Tiffanyyyyy B

Btw this sketch reminds me of the Secret Garden Garage story. 😍 Gotta go back now

Mahirah Sattar

To be honest I thought it was set in Japan

~LostSoul~

Never really thought about their race either. I guess I assumed it was Japan bc of the food Poppy prepared.

CoCoPuff_BB

I was waiting for this post ahahah forgot she posted a few days ago ahahaha

Sophia

Ah my god..... I’m getting butterflies in my stomach from the excitement of this new episode 🤯💗🥵

Red

Vikki Smirnoff

I bet this is a flashback from the night they went into Poppys work. We never saw what happened with that....maybe they are in uniform undercover as janitors or security guards 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Lily

You mentioned twice in conversation that Tora is at least half-Asian despite your insistence of racial vagueness, why not just say so, if that's the case? Just because someone has a district race doesn't mean the character is confined to any such stereotypes or way of life, unless it is written that way. I just don't understand the need for vagueness when representation matters so much to real, breathing people. Race doesn't have to play a part in the narrative just because the representation is distinct. I appreciate that you put a lot of effort into your story, but this statement leaves me kind of disappointed here.

Ravenhall

I love how you've described Narin City. I'd been wondering about the location as well and one of the things I've enjoyed about this story is that it felt really familiar in different ways! And not just the City -- the characters too! Parts of Narin City remind me of streets I've walked in Boston or NYC, and the train scene could have been taken from a rural platform in England or Germany. Poppy reminds me so much of a Swedish friend who taught in Japan <3 I relate *so much* with Poppy's flat, because living in Scotland the mold life ALWAYS chooses you :P but sometimes the view is too good to pass up. I appreciate how relatable this story is, and I love the context of an "Urban Fairytale" that mimics the world we recognize but in a hazy sort of way so we can really focus on the character development. I came to Paton for the smut; I stayed for the content. <3

Jennifer Chauvot

I think you sell yourself short. Your stories are amazing, and I'm totally invested. I'm here, up to date, and I finished AB IN FOUR DAYS. Asura' Bride, MPL, and the Lore Olympus series are seriously the only reason I'm here. You've got perfect fucking content, and I hope after you rest, it rolls again. Makes my heart happy. The secret garden, though? Fucking dynamite.👏👏👏
