So like I said in the high-res artwork post, I made some dialogue edits, nothing too major that would add new information to the episode. Except for this one panel, where Poppy adds that 'they barely know each other'. This is something I decided to emphasise on (not sure if it'll help, but I can try lol), because I noticed a small number of people being up in arms about Tora withholding the truth about his situation from Poppy.

So yes, I strongly agree that lying, or not being honest in a relationship, with your partner, is completely NOT okay. I expect nothing less than full transparency and honesty in my RS with my hubby, and vice-versa.

But just as much as that, we also need to keep in mind that Poppy and Tora are barely even friends, and most certainly NOT!!!! in a romantic relationship, where there is a mutual need to be honest and transparent. I'd go as far as to say it is a HUGE, HUGE dating red-flag (to me, at least), especially at the start, for this person I'm dating to be constantly getting in my face about personal, private matters I'm not ready to talk about - I would honestly run the hell away from Poppy if she started doing that. And I really hope this is something people will understand. PEOPLES RESPECT MY PRIVACY PLEASE!!!! <-- Lol, my inner-Scorpio is screaming. Honestly though, I've been in this situation several times (been on both sides of the coin, in fact. Not fun), and it was a nightmare and very toxic. It also screams of a very deep lack of trust / insecurity issues, which is NO-BUENO.

Anyway because of this, I feel that Tora has a right to his own privacy, and not wanting to reveal to Poppy more than he's comfortable with. And even then, being fully transparent and honest, even in a long-term RS is not always possible! A personal example - my hb does finance/corporate/sales-related work. Some of the projects he works on tend to be *very* sensitive topics for him to talk about, for a variety of reasons. And when he says he doesn't want to talk about it, I respect that. Period. Likewise for myself - like when I read a particularly shitty comment lol and I'm fuming, and hubby wants to talk, but I just clamp up and refuse - he respects that too.

Granted I know the information Tora is withholding could potentially get Poppy into trouble. But let's not forget that the man is doing EVERYTHING he can to keep her out of trouble. This is a very very unique (and yes, dark and kind of twisty) situation and I don't think common dating 'rules' should apply, in this instance.

Last but not least - when Poppy talks of how she respects his right to privacy, it is so, so, so much more than that, for Tora. Because this man has lived all his life with every shred of RIGHTS, taken away from him - starting from the point he was made a Balthuman 'belonging'. So having Poppy affirm that Tora has a right to his privacy, to me, is indicative of a validation of the very basic rights that this poor, poor soul has had robbed from him, and been deprived of, all his life (imma go cry now).

This turned into a long-ass rant but I swear, I'm not even half as angry as I might sound😂😂It's just a topic I find very interesting and feel quite passionately about. And since MPL is all about relationships, let's TALK relationship! <3

Agreed! Even though I’m nosy (Gemini tings), this is how I would react if I were poppy! If I liked someone, as I believe poppy has developed some form of a crush on Tora (I mean how can you not?), I would want to EARN their respect and their honesty. Being that they LITERALLY just met like a week or so ago (I think?), it’s not in any way realistic to jump into each other’s lives. It’s the little things that matter to someone, that eventually grow into something more meaningful, like Tora’s protection, the strawberry hair tie, the muffin-this ALL leads to a stronger relationship! And yet at the same time I just can’t WAIT to see them all lovey dovey with one another. I’m so ready. And thank you lily, for your realism. This is one hell of a story. Can’t wait til next week ❤️

100% agree. The only time I tell porky pies to my husband is when it is how much I paid for an item of clothing 🤣🤣 'but it was on sale!!!'

Léa Boyer

Well, it’s just that.... Amen lol 😂

These sorta posts are one of the reasons I fell in love with your work. Your care so deeply for your characters and their worlds that you put this level of thought into it. This is the main reason these relationships have such depth and color to them. Thank you for your thoughts, I'm so excited to see where this all leads 💖

Relationships can definitely be a complex topic to discuss, especially when values are put into perspective. I am glad for this "Behind the Scenes" chat. Readers can actually recieve some actual author intent instead of ambiguously inferring it or "over-justifying" towards their preferred outcome. It's going to be delicious for me to see how/why an author's makes certain artistic decisions! -says me, after waking up at 2:43 a.m.

Nina Castelmonti

I think is perfect the dialog, dont worry Lily. You are doing a good job👍 Kisses mmmmuaks💋💋

caseyjarryn

I love that you are building up their relationship in a healthy and respectful way from the start instead of just diving right in. It makes their growing feelings that much more realistic. My heart breaks for Tora whenever we see glimpses of his past and every time he is treated like a trained dog even by Quincey who I love! It's so nice to see Poppy validating him as his own person with rights and feelings that matter just as much as anyone else's!

Annie J

I agree with everything you said, Lily. Everyone has a right to their privacy. I am a very private person and if someone I just me kept pushing to know things that needed a lot of trust on my part, I would say "fuck it" and leave. Same if I pushed. Looks too much like someone trying to control another person. So far, I think Poppy and Tora are progressing very naturally and at their own pace. And even if it gets more serious, I would expect them to have some things they dont talk about. Like you said, jobwise some things are more sensitive and irrelevant. On a more personal level, I guess it depends what it is and how it affects the relationship. Again, about the past, some issues are not always resolved in one's mind. So they will not talk about until they are ready to do so and people need to respect that. But there will always be things we wished we knew and are deal breakers for some. We each have our own baggage and can or cannot deal with certain things and people also need to respect that. I know it must be difficult for you to navigate through some comments by people from different culture, different age group, different life experiences, but I feel you are doing a great job at dealing with it and staying true to yourself. 🥰

Nina Castelmonti

And is telling you that a real writer. (even my english is not too good because im catalan)

Lacey Blankenship

Thank you for keeping their relationship/acquaintanceship realistic and not rushing things. As eager as we all are to see things progress, this is so much better. Also, poor Tora. He's such a broken little baby, and I just want to wrap him up in a blanket and make all the bad things go away. I know his life has been just horrifying, so much worse than the little snippets we've seen so far. Thanks for all your amazing work. ❤️

think that the overinterpretation of Tora and Poppy's relationship is due to our impatience as fans and unrelated(?) but still with the participation of Poopa and Tora stories SG. In the main story, the characters are at the beginning of their relationship ... and we are looking forward to development of their relationship at the SG level ... not only this body part, but also at the spiritual level. I love this story and the comments that deeply analyze the story and the frame of the story that Lily shows us. Please forgive me if something sounded wrong, but English is not my native language and I may not express my thoughts very well.

Asma Alshamsi

Regardless of Poppy feelings toward Tora, he is still not welling to give it all becuz of what he is... he is already not proud or happy of his current situation... him trying to protect Poppy from mafia will end so badly which can be like death or almost died... i think this is how mafia world is🤷🏻‍♀️

Tiffanyyyyy B

Thanks so much for this! I loved that you explained it, I still don't like that he lied of course, but it helps me understand him much more! Adding new layers to the characters 👌 I'm all about it!

Rebecca Darby

Yes! Thank you for adding this clarification and nuance! I'm completely with your reasoning here. I think total transparency and honesty is the ideal state and a goal, and at the same time, it can't be there from the start. Let's think about the total time that Poppy and Tora have spent together, and what they've said. It's not that much, and for most of that time, we've been watching two diametrically opposite worlds clash. Try to imagine meeting someone from the opposite side of your social environment, and be honest: even if you like them and want to be open with them (and that's a big if!), to what extent can you do so when you first meet? Now make at least one of you an introvert, give at least one of you some major and/or recent trauma, and add in general mistrust of people for either personal or general reasons... It just isn't _realistic_ to expect total honesty and transparency here.

A Braswell

Loved your remarks. One of the reasons why I love MPL is the complexness of the story. As a Sagittarius, one of our curses is trying to see the good in every situation and person. Even when we probably should run in the other direction. Tora knows he is bad for Poppy, but she gives him a comfort he has never known. The same is for poppy. Tora seems to be the only person since her father that has given her the emotional/mental comfort that there is nothing wrong with her having a weird personality. I can relate cause I'm weird and my hubby is the only man outside of my dad that never made me feel ashamed of that🥰. Eventhough when we started dating, people thought I shouldn't have given him a chance due to demons from his past. Obviously, he was worth it. We have an awesome life and family. Anywayz....lol. Thank you lily for this story that shows nothing is simply "black & white." Relationships have alot of grey.

Soosie

Yesss I totally agree. Thank you for sharing that personal example of you and your hubby! And then tying it in to Poppy affirming Tora's right to privacy even though they barely know each other 💯💖. Although I share just about every detail with my bf of 8 yrs, we still respect our privacies too when situation calls for it. I remember he mentioned before that even if he gets negative words from people, he doesn't always need to share those things with me because it might harm me as I 'anger' for him, so he protects me in a way by keeping that from me. I love that Tora met someone like Poppy, and love the person Poppy is even after being with Julri... Side note (rereading ep 30-34 to re-enjoy seeing their relationship grow😍): I wonder which friends Tora sent the tiger bento picture to hehe. Tora and Julri are such opposites... Love that as Poppy gave Tora something he's never gotten (right to privacy in this case), Tora also gave Poppy something too (being proud of her cute bentos when Julri was ashamed of it). 💖

Myosotis

Thank you for sharing this point of view with us. It is really important to me to know what you think because it is your story and it enables us to see through your eyes. And I love it !

Bee

Your story, before the edits and now after, are compelling and it draws me in. I do hope you made those edits not to appease anyone but because you wanted them. Tora and Poppy are hardly even friends at this point. While his heart is allowing her in, he also knows it's best to keep her at a distance and not include her in the world he lives in; protecting her innocence is his priority. In the slide where Tora quickly rebuttles that if he were involved with the shoe there would be more blood, it's to protect her and to not lose her trust;he didn't lie (which is my favorite scene because it shows that he cares so much already). He wasn't "technically" involved in what happened with the shoe but rather involved with the shoes owner, perhaps. As for Poppy, she knows that he's not a straight laced guy, but chooses to see the good in him knowing there are bad things. I think she knows, as she knew with the other men that he "works" with, they are bad news. She still allowed him up because she is beginning to trust him. It's a wonderful moment. On that, no one is owed information, regardless of their situation or relationship, real life or beautiful stories. There is something to be said about how you choose to tell your story (also real life and stories) and you are in control of it. If information is left out or not provided it isn't distrust, it's because you are not yet at a point where you are able to accept those things for yourself. I believe your character development is on point. You wrote a beautiful narrative and provided depth and feelings in this wonderful story so far. I'm looking forward to continue reading it.

EIIisemme

As readers, trust and patience are our virtues that the story that you create and reveal as an artist will be both compelling and rewarding. Characters need complexity to feel genuine and relatable— glimpses into both of Poppy and Tora’s lives reveal that they have unmet needs and hopes for themselves and dreams of a more complete and fulfilled life ( I’m not suggesting that interpersonal romantic relationships are the only way to reach this — but in this story, it is a romance). As your characters grow and as the nuances of their unique narratives are revealed, we’ll see how this all goes together. Thank you for an interesting and beautifully drawn weekly diversion from the mess that is 2020.

Ele_Smiles

The episode kinda of explained why he was withholding information from Poppy...why he wasn’t completely disclosing everything to her. Outside of the reason that Poppy respects Tora’s privacy or because they barely know each other, Tora explained to Gyu he’s trying to keep Poppy safe. He doesn’t want to reveal anything that could bring her harm. Tora’s been trying to get that notebook back while trying to protect Poppy from any clan member finding out that she has. it. That’s part of the reason Tora’s been dealing with her himself; that and he’s drawn to her. Poppy doesn’t look at him like he’s a “bad” person anymore but instead she wants to do things like hold his hand for comfort (balcony scene 😉) and she wants to trust him...plus he really digs her body 🙂. I can’t wait until their budding acquaintance turns into a real relationship! ❤️

KaiyaValentine

It is your story Lilly and I luv every second of it . Don't justify yourself, just create their beautiful and at time heartbreaking story like you imagine it because I absolutely luv what you did so far ! :D can't wait to see it unfold ! I will definitely stay tuned ! <3

Courtney Boylan

I couldn't agree more with everything you said!! Especially as a Scorpio- generally, I want the truth at all times, but I also understand that sometimes there's things that can't be talked about. And if I barely knew someone and they started making demands for information about me regarding things I considered personal or things I didn't feel like that they were entitled to or had the right to know that early on? That would be an *instant* red flag. And that goes for people I'm befriending, or dating. So GOOD ON POPPY for letting our boy know that he doesn't need to share every secret hidden in every nook and cranny of his life. She sees him, and respects his right to privacy, especially this early on, and that's why we stan our girl Poppy!! She sees him as a PERSON, not a piece of property, not a tool to be used or weapon to be wielded, and I am so glad Tora found her. Even just as budding friends, I think they will be so good for each other- but she'll be especially good for him. Honestly, the way their relationship is developing is perfect. You've set the perfect pace for them. As fans, of course we instantly shipped them (especially us Discover/Canvas people who already knew and loved these characters!) and so of course we're dying for the ship to sail, but not SO badly that we want to see the plot and pace of this beautiful series you've created get destroyed! You have done everything so, SO well and I can't wait to continue to watch their development as individual characters, and to watch their relationship develop as friends, and thennnnnn see our long-awaited ship set sail. Everything about MPL is just fabulous and honestly, nothing makes me happier than the fact that your story was recognized for the gem that it is and that you got featured!! In so many ways, your story is so REAL, and we love it! Please keep doing what you're doing because you are an incredibly gifted artist and storyteller, and I can't wait for the rest of the story to unfold. I learn so much from Poppy every time I read it ❤

Caslpk

Thank you for keeping it realistic! That’s seriously one of my biggest pet peeves in other stories when the sudden magical perfect relationship is rushed and seems to have just appeared from nowhere with zero buildup. This story is incredible and I can’t wait to see how things continue to unfold!! You do amazing work! 💚💚

Kima

I love how you bring in the scorpio type of characters and I love to see an astrology post as well

Derf n’ Bob

@Lilydusk It’s wonderful that you go above and beyond to explain sensitive items. You defiantly have a talent for enveloping the entire mood into each scene-it’s not hard to see the balance between the setting, the facial expressions, the body language. What they say-especially in real life-May not be exactly what they mean-but the visual aspects speak volumes and def communicate your intentions. PROPS TO YOU and thank you!!!!!!!

pdinnny

We're such fans of these two, and so desperate for them to be together. In our minds Poppy and Tora have been in a relationship for twenty years and a day 😅. They've only recently met, but we've already got their kids' names picked out. I love her character. Imo, Poppy shows so much maturity and understanding, more so than I ever had at ANY age. All the characters surprise me. I make wild guesses and predictions every week. Don't think I've ever been right once 🤡, and I like it that way. This is the first comic ever where the story and artwork have absolutely gotten me so swept up. The attention to detail is amazing and I love that I have to go back and forth to reread, and end up finding a thousand things I've missed the first time around.

Arumi

I love this episode, and the realism of it - which is essential for building a strong relationship. In my mind I *know* that these tough moments will help them build a healthier bond, but of course I'm battling with my hopeless-romanticism brain, "KISS KISS FALL IN LOVE" (an Ouran High School Club reference, for the uninitiated). In all seriousness Lily, I love that there were enough moments of fluff in between the serious moments, which made it just the right amount of tension without being too heavy of a weight for us readers. And, the ending, a perfect "Awwww" moment to leave us with something adorable for next week! In fantasy, I think many of us are used to insta-love, because the idea of it is so appealing - to meet someone and instantly connect with them so deeply, right away, that romance happens THAT MOMENT. What I love about your series is that it shows two people who obviously have a strong connection and attraction to each other, but know they have some building to do before they can entertain the possibility of being together (and possibly "against all odds", which makes for more delicious angst). "We barely know each other" is a dash of cold water on romantic fantasy, but in this case, it's one that reminds us that the connection they have is still in its early building stages. Thank you for giving us the hand-holding, nose-booping, boob-squish-hug fluff moments to keep our inner hopeless-romanticism happy during the building process. <3

Minimouette

This, this here is gold. Some of the reasons I love this comic so much is 1: the realism behind the way their relationship is developed, with trust slowly establishing itself but not fully. I mean, they met each others a week or two ago? There is no way Poppy have already fully processed her highschool sweetheart cheating on her, it would be weird and super unhealty for her to fall in an other man's arm right away. This bring me to 2: because of how healty their interactions are. While I agree lying is not healty in a long term relationship, when you are learning to know and trust each other it is an other story. Some informations are better to be told slowly and a little latter when it can be understood and safer to explain. I also remember the car scene before they went to the grocery store where beautifull clear consent was established. No gray zone was left: "we can go eat, but if you don't want to and you're not comfortable, it's okay" it was a clear reminder to Poppy that she had the power to say no safely. Clear consent is a major element that is absent in pop culture and work of fiction, with some of the consequences we sadly all know. So when i read stories there is always so many major red flags... I know it is fiction, but for me it break the immersion. To see a story like MPL where the red flags are killed before they can even raise, Icry of hapiness and jump on it, share it and use it to show how it is possible to create good narrative with caracthers that respect their boundaries and use comunication like it should be used. Thank you Lilly for such a well written story ❤.

Grace Boone

Lily, thank you for the thoughtful explanation and realistic story building! I totally agree with the points you've made about honesty and privacy, and the varying balance of each that is healthy in different relationships. Loving this story and how much love and care you put into it each week!

Sarah R

Ughhh this is why I love this WEBTOON and YOU Lily so much! So much thought and detail into everything and I usually 100% agree (must be a Scorpio thing!) In any real relationship you’re going to have bumps and bruises along the way. As my husband says “it’s not all cupcakes and rainbows”. You have to work and learn to adjust your normalcy for the ones the you love.

MollzJJ

Thank you Lily for always taking the time and care to explain your vision and meaning behind certain scenes to all of us. You’ve done this a few times and we love you for it. I was actually surprised when people started to worry that he was lying or hiding the truth because to me it never occurred to be a problem because he’s in the mob! 🤷‍♀️ In the Sicilian mafiosa there is a thing called “omertà”- a vow of silence that you will never reveal mafia secrets, and if broken, it’s punishable by death. This includes not telling the truth to your wife, parents, siblings, closest friends. Most organized crime across the globe have a similar oath and Tora is just following the code he’s known his whole life, plus what Poppy doesn’t know keeps her away from danger. ❤️❤️

Karima Shamma

I love your thought process for this!!

Morgane

First of all, thank you for all this work!! We LIVE for it! Fast passing every friday night and reading through all these theories of all those lovely ladies are my weekend treat 🙌🏼 So after reading all the comments, re-reading multiple time the ep, there is just this one panel that I can’t put my mind around. I just don’t understand.. So they barely know each other. Why is Poppy tearing up? What makes her tear up? Is she sad that maybe he should leave? Is she scared of him? is she scared for him? I don’t understand 😫😫

Ravenhall

I think people aren't perfect. People do and say things that aren't perfect! And trust takes a long time to grow, in any kind of relationship (even non-romantic ones!) I think with this episode you can really tell Tora is struggling to keep Poppy out of any connection with his life in a crime syndicate, but also wants so badly to know how it feels to HAVE a life without that kind of fear. He doesn't want to loose that connection he's building with her, but he wants to make sure she's ready to run. Because it's more important to him to make sure she never knows that fear than it is for him to keep her in his life. To me, it's not a question whether or not it's healthy, it's a very human thing to do. And that makes it more real. <3

Alexara

I truly loved this episode and their conversation. I think it is totally understandable and WAY more realistic that they would not share every detail about their lives since they just met and just like you said that is not even possible to truly share every detail. They are not even in a relationship.... yet (hopefully, obviously I am rooting for them to be in one) and they have not known each other that long. It also is super sweet that she did say that to Tora since he has not had any of those rights throughout his life.

Ocean

Even though I didnt necessarily think Tora NEEDED to tell Poppy the truth right away, I was definitely hoping that he would. But I can also see the need for privacy, especially after reading your thoughts Lily. Its funny how different peoples thoughts and relationships can be. Im not a very open person but I always feel obligated/ forced(?) to explain myself to others. Its a terrible trait to have that Id really like to get rid of. I wish I had been able to say no a little more and stand up for myself so I could have avoided uncomfortable situations, like our boy Tora did. Definitely would have had better relationships with SO and friends if I knew my comfort limits. Shout out to you Lily, and everyone else who knows their limits.

Darla (Tora’s THOT)

Fellow Scorpio as well love! I completely agree, honesty in a relationship is crucial and I’m glad you reminded everyone that they are barely even friends??? And NOT in a relationship! It’s still the beginning of getting to know each other, Poppy may be more of an open book because she never had her rights taken away and was able to be herself! I mean look at her outfit- bright, colorful, skin exposed (more free). Tora HAS to keep secrets purely to keep her safe and is extremely guarded for fear of judgement and mind you, he looks guarded (black hoodie up at first, completely covered, even his hair was in his face shielding). And just when poppy gives him the hair tye is when he can attempt to try to tell her the truth as his face is less guarded, ie, Poppy is his key to freedom. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I trust lily as the artist/storyteller to know things happen for a reason between them. And I just know it’s a slow process for Tora but we have to respect his reasoning and simply because he is the way he is. Privacy is always something we need to respect from one another and when we feel comfortable or trust someone, that’s when shit can be revealed.

Valerie P

I totally agree with Lily there is a big difference when you are first dating someone vs. living with them, having a joint checking account, and been married to them for 10 years. For me it is a huge red flag when someone wants to know your dating history after knowing each other for a week. It takes years to know someone and find out about them. Right now they are only flirting. They are not even official: They know they like each other, and they want to hang out. The thoughts of intimacy are there, but they are taking it slow. I think they both want this to be a LTR but they know that in both their situations that it is better to take it slow. Poppy is saying to Tora is that I do not need to know everything about you yet. But she also implies she IS NOT READY. We know she knows he is a thug by the way she jokes around with him but she doesn't know what level of thug. And she's pretty much saying she is not ready to hear that, yet. She knows when the timing is right he will tell her. And that is how you gain someone trust and grow in a relationship. Over time, things will change and I think Poppy will loose some of her "innocence" that Tora is so attracted (I also think Poppy is not as "innocent" as Tora thinks and is as tough as him in her own way) and he will learn that she can handle things. I also think by the way Quincey, Gyru, and Tora talk to each other they want out of the mafia; it sounds like they are so jaded and hate it. I think that's why Gyru has so many jobs: he is saving up for something legit (like opening his own shop). If that is the case, Tora might not want to tell Poppy everything. Especially if he thinking of a life outside the mafia with Poppy.

Alex

Yes I agree relationship and trust takes time to evolve and strengthen its not normal or realistic to just unload all your trauma and feelings into one person u don’t know very well, especially if u live in a world like tora does. I’m sure every time he has trusted or believed in someone he has been let down in some way either from that person of from an enemy that wanted to hurt that person to get to him, so it makes sense as to why his guard is up even around poppy even tho deep down he knows she is a good person and most likely won’t judge it’s clear he is not ready and won’t be ready for a while to share that kind of stuff with her, and I don’t believe she is ready either due to the fact that she is just starting to realize what kind of person tora is and what kind of stuff he is into and I’m sure it’s scary for her since she has lived in a world that is Mostly black and white with no great area. And since she does end up finding out more about tora and the world he inhabits it will completely change her world as well and I think deep down she knows that and is scared of that outcome happening even tho it inevitably will end up happening. Very rocky situation for the both of them. Once these worlds collide ,life will never be the same for ether of them.

That’s funny that you mentioned this lily haha I was thinking it was too soon for anything to happen as well. They have only seen each other a total of 5 times. First was at the train station, second was the same day but later in the day, when he caught her from falling out of the tree. The third time is at Chevys and the fourth time they meet is later that day for diner. And then he sees her after she saves mr lam and the kid that passed the note, and have dinner. This is barley the 5th time they see each other. I’ve gotta say, I absolutely love how slow everything is going 😊 you get more of that build up of emotions and it makes it that much better once they do start something or if they do. For us aaaand for poppy and Tora😏 wheres my girl Lola?! 💕😂 ALSO, a funny little side note as to why I love this WEBTOON so much.... Tora looks like a taller, waaay buffer version of my ex 😂 I shit you not, the only difference is the hair, my ex had some beautiful curly locks that would make any girl envious, and the height. Everything else is pretty spot on 🤣 I even showed him a couple days ago and he freaked out and was like “omg this is so cool! He looks like me but perfect!” 🤣 like the skin tone, eyes, he has a smaller figure but he’s pretty buff still, even how private Tora is with his life and his way of thinking (I’m really good friends with my ex still, kinda hard not to be when we lived together and have so many memories and we didn’t end in bad terms and he’s perfect... and looks like Tora!) I was actually quiet hesitant to read the webtoon too cause of how much toras eyes alone reminded me of him haha but im so happy that i did. I didn’t think I’d be able to get butterflies again or smile but lily you really have some magic.. thank you for such a great story 💜 I hope nothing but the best for you 😋

Ok, new theory...I think Poppy never had the notebook. It was never clarified that the black and white notebook she had in her stack was even the notebook that Goliath had, it was only ever implied. But if you read back in Eps 30, when Gil told Poppy that he grabbed a report from her desk, she also told him she had organized her things. I’m thinking the black and white notebook was the report Gil was talking about. And Tora’s right, Poppy’s too carefree to have stumbled across something that was obviously incriminating to act all nonchalant about it. She has absolutely no poker face to hide her thoughts and feelings. Soooo yeah, Tora just clarified that Poppy knows absolutely nothing of the notebook without having to ask her out right. That’s why he lightened the mood...he knew she was struggling with her thoughts and was having a mini panic attack and he didn’t want to scare her off for no reason.

Julia G

Honestly, it’s strange that people are worrying about this. They’ve know each other for at most two weeks if that. They aren’t in a relationship in any way. Honestly, Poppy’s questions aren’t wrong to ask because she knows there’s more to why he took the photo of her than what he’s said. That’s all she’s really asking about and that is her right to know why a strange man takes her picture. When she asked, she wasn’t sure that it was connected to the thug business she knows he’s involved in. Once that is confirmed, she chooses to let it go when he says he can’t tell her more. I think the only reason she asked if he had something to do with the bloody shoe is to figure out if the shoe may be connected to why he took the picture. I think now that she has this information and knows that those things are connected, she’ll leave it be because she doesn’t want to know the details. I think she knows Tora’s character enough in the ways he treats her that he doesn’t want to see her harmed. Examples: throwing his jacket on her in the train, catching her from the tree, the safety advice on the balcony. On Tora’s side of it, he’s in the mafia. Passing information to outsiders would get him into serious trouble and her as well. Like Tora said “Communication gets people tortured. Or worse.” Telling her would also shatter her view of the world and he doesn’t want her to live in fear or to fear him. Their conversation had a lot of “read between the lines” moments. He gave her enough information through his words, expressions and his actions to tell her what he could without giving her more than she can know at this point. Like I said in the episode discussion, he basically told her “I’m lying and I’m sorry but you need to let this go.” when she asked about the photo and she accepted that. When they talked about the shoe, he’s telling her in a way she’ll understand “Consider the shoe a prank, the real story is bloody and has to do with my thug business.” She takes his actual words as a joke at first but you can see these words (or a similar understanding) pass between them in the panels of them staring at each other after he says it. There’s a change in her expression that gives me the impression that she understood his meaning behind his words. She chooses to drop the subject and changes to a safer topic. She doesn’t press for information because she understands that he’s keeping it from her for a reason and she’s also not ready to know. Tora’s nose boop and that soft grin when he calls her pretty aren’t just amusement about the green paint, there’s also relief that this isn’t over, that’s she didn’t walk away. My only concern is people like Yadori. If he ever makes threats against Poppy, Tora might not tell her just like he didn’t tell her about Scharch (he just waited until Scharch wasn’t going to be in town to tell her where Mr Lam was) and that could have seriously backfired. I’ve read plenty of other stories that involve various crime organizations and ones of the key causes of a “innocent/kept in the dark character” getting into trouble is the protector knowing someone was a threat and not giving any kind of warning. I hope if the time comes Tora tells her, “If you see this person walk away, they are not safe to be around.” He doesn’t have to give her anything and I think she’d be ok without further information because by that point the trust between them would be even stronger. Here’s hoping they get to the end of their story (and their happily ever after-however that may look) without too many roadblocks and hurdles at least not enough to break them because I would cry for weeks if they didn’t stay together at the end of this journey...just sayin 🤷🏽‍♀️

I will try to keep this short (yeah right, who am I kidding?). I have to admit, initially I was in the "tell her the truth" camp because of my own views on honesty (trust me, when you grow up with a compulsive liar in your life, it creates ALL kinds of trust issues). However, when I took a step back and looked at the story as a whole and most importantly, the timeline- it makes complete sense. Why would Tora open that Pandora's box? It would not only completely undermine all the work he's done to protect her, but just like you said Lily, completely expose Tora in a way he's not ready for yet. He absolutely has a right to not share what he's not ready to share. Not to mention, I think we all know, in the long run, Poppy would be in MORE danger because she's too curious and headstrong not to get involved. I chalk up the fandom misunderstanding due to the relatively young age of the readership and underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex.😂 🤷‍♀️ At least that's what I tell myself to cool off when I see ignorant comments and start sharpening my pitchfork. 😂 And Lily, I felt you on so many levels with the relationship honesty bits. I too, believe in complete transparency in my relationship, but there are certainly bits that cannot be shared. I'm very lucky in that my husband gets it because he was in the military. There's this concept called "Operational Security" (Op Sec for short)- you cannot share certain details about your mission, particularly dates of return, not even to your own spouse. You get a range of dates and that's about it. My hubs and I use this concept in our relationship when it comes to my profession. Confidentiality of my clients' stories is paramount, but sometimes even I struggle emotionally with my work. But I can't really talk about it with him. So we have this deal where if I'm having a shit day and he asks if I wanna talk about it- if I say "Op sec", he immediately knows I can't talk about it. Cue the take out and ice cream. And that's enough for me and for him. 💜 And ladies, gents- I wholeheartedly second Lily's comments about red flags in relationships with oversharing. Your friendly neighborhood therapist is here to tell you, if someone emotionally vomits on you like that a week into knowing you- RUN FOR THE HILLS. Thank you for attending my TED talk. I knew this wasn't gonna be short. 😂😂

Life is beautiful

It is not a "rant" but a beautiful truth. Poppy is giving him little by little every time they meet a little more of his rights. Every time they meet Tora gets to see that Life is not like the Balthum forced him see it. They might have stripped him of everything but Poppy is slowly giving home and faith and the ability too see that he can trust others. Lily, Thank you for the red flags and specially for making all this points so specially about people needing their privacy. Not many people understand that and have the need to know everything.

Amy Crumbaugh

Just when I think I can’t like you any more than I already do, Lily, you go and make another insightful and important post. Thank you for taking the time to say all of this ❤️

Brittney Daniela

I adore the amount of thought you have put into this. It excites me for the story. I know that anyone who thinks about “small” details with this intensity is going to bring a deep and heart felt story. Honestly this behind the scene post is so thrilling for me 🤩😍💕

Ez-Cheez

I absolutely love that Poppy didn’t pry. I think she is incredibly smart and emotionally aware. She isn’t going to wheedle something out of him that he’s not ready to share because she respects his boundaries, even unspoken ones. And I think from their interaction that she realizes he’s often trying to keep her safe (maybe even from himself?). It’s kind of like she’s dealing with a wounded animal so she’s treading lightly, with much patience to offer him an “out” without realizing it. I love this dynamic and I can’t wait to see more.

Bi Skull Fairy

I’m sorry you had to explain this. Yes, you can tell that they are just scratching the surface of understanding and getting to know each other in this series so far. I love how you have made all the characters and each of their own personalities and quirks. I am glad that you show the vulnerability and the topics that humans struggle with in this. Thank you for your bravery in doing so and creating such beautiful art in this comic. Thank you, thank you. 🖤

Victoria Dias

Their slow burn romance is perfect, it’s not just those frustrating happenings, there’s a lot of dynamic interactions and friendly exchanges between them! Every time there’s a romance story that keeps dragging months for something good to happen (and that “good” thing is CLICHÉ AS F*) I get booooored and drop it. I ain’t got time for that, I think my shoujo self is no longer patient, I’m much more josei now 😂😂 growing up is weird ugh

Amanda Baker

I just want to say that I love how you have been telling their story! What you said here, I felt all of that in Friday’s episode, the fact that she respects his privacy and how it bothers him to have to keep stuff from her for her own good. All of it, I felt in the episode. You are a fantastic story teller and I am so deeply invested in this story! I have fast passed this since day one of the rerelease and from there, joined your Patreon because I can’t get enough of MPL. I have turned all my friends into your story and my family 💜

Kayanee Akins

bro i jus wanna know where my dude tora got that green stuff from ;-;

princesahyuuga

For me, their interaction is happening in such a natural and beautiful way, I'm really enjoying it. It is good to be able to follow the development of this relationship. As for the people complaining, maybe they are just rushing things, anxious to see our couple happen. I imagine it is boring to read a lot of comments with unfounded criticisms, such as that thing about Tora smoking ... he is from the mafia, he lives under stress, so what do people expect?!!! I think people lack common sense, but I also think it is caused because they are enjoying the story so much that they are eager to see it all happen.

kaielichi

Just wanted to say I'm new to your Patreon (and Patreon in general) but I'm completely obsessed with your art! I binged both AB and MPL in a day and HAD to have more content! You write beautiful stories with such well thought out characters, not to mention your grasp of the human body is breath-taking. Please keep up the amazing work, I will stan you till the end of time ❤

Ashley Gainey

I love how naturally their relationship is progressing. I think that if Tora started blabbing all of his issues and inner most secrets and confessions it would detract from the super realistic character you created. He is a tough guy that is used to a certain amount of independence. Yes, he answers to the mafia but he seems to have built a reputation for himself that demands respect. He certainly isn’t going to enjoy losing that part of himself at first. When you’re only worried about yourself you don’t second guess risks as much as you would when you have someone that depends on you. So no, overnight someone like Tora wouldn’t flip their whole world around. It’s going to take our Poppy some time to chip that armor away!

Derf n’ Bob

Okay this is really random but has anyone else made Tora and Pops in The Sims...asking for a friend...🙃

Alex

Random question but will you also do a playlist for MPL? I’d be really curious to see what ur take on the playlist would be like (: @lilydusk

TeHeeJones

I didn't really see it as Tora lying to Poppy. I saw it more as in telling her what she needs to know VS what she doesn't, because it's very apparent that he just wants to keep her safe. As Tora stated, people could just take one look at him and know what he is all about. Poppy is sweet and gentle, but i think deep down she knows that Tora doesn't walk a straight line. I for one am glad she didn't pester him about his personal life very much (that would have been rather annoying 😅, and if he would have told her everything then we wouldn't have such an amazing suspenseful story). I think it was a think ice breaker for the two of them that went rather well in my book. Lilydusk spectacular job as always 🥰!!!

FTNyx

I didn’t feel that tora was lying, more like evading the full truth because in his line of work, the more you know the depose you are into it and are susceptible to getting in trouble. Right now her not knowing anything is the best example of “ignorance is bliss”

mabarigroomer88

I think that the conversation was absolutely realistic considering the situation. Poppy is a great heroine because she is thoughtful. It makes the dynamic with Tora great because she is honest but not purposely cruel. He is not used to being treated like a person. I think you’re doing a great job.

Diana

Honestly Poppy is one of the very few female characters that shows not only courage, maturity, independent but vulnerability at the same time.. making her very relatable and easily liked as a character...🥰🥰

Afton Jennings

I think the pacing for the development of their friendship is perfect. I'm so glad that you've made it genuine and not rushed, the best things come with time 💛

Heather Woodville

You artwork and content have been a huge help to my stress and anxiety lately, thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!

Alondra

Will they ever be in a romantic relationship 🥺♥️

Mjpan_7

I so totally love how this relationship is developing. I feel Tora. He is in a tight spot right now. I so cannot wait to see how thing progress and how they both overcome the extremes in their lives and relationship.

Coffee Dragon

I live for these in depth behind the scenes discussions

Lilydusk

Thank you all so much for your responses!! I'm so glad I opened this discussion because I had such an amazing time going through everyone's comments and this is a treasure trove of insight! Much love to all of the absolutely brilliant minds I'm in the company of. I can't be any prouder to have all of you as my readers and tribe 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️

LouCas27

I was also confused why some fans/ readers were upset with Tora for lying, even comparing him to Poppy’s ex-boyfriend. You can’t compare the two since each had different intentions: Julri lied because he was cheating on her while Tora had to withhold information because, hello, mafia — where communication gets you tortured or worse.

Jo.Rho

I actually really appreciate the pacing of their relationship. Sometimes, I feel artists rush the story too quickly to solidify the relationship when in terms of the storyline they've barely met. It's really refreshing when storytellers keep the timeline realistic despite everyone in the comment section clamoring about whatever whirlwind romance their grandparents had. 🙄

Wanders Through Books

Yassssssss! This! They are barely friends - though they both clearly have feelings for each other - so at this point, Tora doesn't "owe" Poppy any information about what he does. The second the relationship changes, which it seems like it's gonna' do real fast, then he does owe her the truth about his life.
