The realistic themes of life are what make this comic so much more than a comic, but a compilation of life lessons and food for thought that we should all be thinking about more often, but often overlook. We tend to be blinded by the issues of our own life, and judge others for their struggles without even thinking. I need to reread again, but as always, this is a new favorite. Will there even be one I don’t enjoy? I’m going to confidently say “never”. ❤️

I’ve had a rough week studying for a huge exam I have coming up, and the stress has been real. This episode made it a little bit better, so thank you Lily 🥰 All I can say is that the characterization in this episode really stands out. The characters are never one dimensional, and the conversation between Candy and Benjamin just brought that out even more. Everyone has something they are struggling with, something that keeps them going, and this episode was a reminder that you don’t really know anyone wholly. There’s always more to people, and we should try and take the time to get to know and understand others before we pass judgement. Side note, unrelated, I didn’t think Tora could get hotter but dayum that turtle neck 😍 and Poppy looked so cute the inside jokes between the two of them had my heart melting I can’t wait for more ☺️

I would like to first say that if Tora finds our that Benjamin is selling Poppy Hair pin he is DEAD MEAT 😳. Jacob is definitely going to feel the pressure when he realizes that Tora is the Greek God... Now that we know what Benjamin’s suicide mission was, I wonder what’s the story behind the debt she owes. I think its amazing how Lily writes such real multifaceted characters. I understand Benjamin frustration, wanting to protect his mom, being frustrated and embarrassed of the men talking sexually and objectifying her. I also understand Candy making a living for her and her son, enjoying the sexual freedom and power that comes with her job. Maybe even for once having what she feels is control on her life and means to support him. Powerful men literally begging her for her time and attention. And thats real. Even with female sexual empowerment, it doesn’t change how hard it can be being the child/ relative of a sex worker and the scrutiny and criticism they received just by proxy. Which is completely unfair. Also that Make me😈😈😈😈😈

I really appreciated this episode’s thoughtful discussion of sex work. Back in the day I worked in San Francisco with members of a sex workers union, COYOTE (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics) and learned a lot about sex workers’ struggles for dignity and violence-free workplaces. I know young women who have danced or done peep show work (which like quite a bit of sex work does not necessarily involve having sex with people) to get through college. Candy’s points are valid, she is making an honest living. Her job duties fall within the law. Working for TBO, hopefully she gets insurance, paid leave, etc., and so on; it’s an actual job. Of course sex workers have families, and it is so painful to have your children feel the shame and stigma associated with sex work and then experience that fallout in those most intimate relationships. This sex work stigma is also profoundly bound up with the hypocritical double standards regarding sexual behavior for men and women, such as slut-shaming and the virgin or whore dichotomy. So SUPER kudos to Lilydusk for the deft and nuanced handling of these real and complex issues in this bittersweet scene. I loved it. Also appreciated Ben seeing the broke side of Poppy, and remembering her compassion for him when he was injured, and his subsequent realistic moral struggle: do I regret ripping her off since she’s kind and also not as rich as I thought? Maybe, but not enough to give it back, at this point anyway. Agree with all on the hotness of Turtleneck Tora, as well as Quincey’s adorable pairing of sweater vest and shorts. Everybody looks so stylish today! So I'll be over here waiting for Poppy to pony up that substitute reward…

All the emphasis being placed on the hairpin (that isn't really a hairpin, more like a brooch) really do get me thinking what kind of role it will play in the story. Lily's storytelling style is not really one for red herrings... Definetly Chekhov's gun! ("all the dots are connected") *waiting eagerly for those "guns" to fire!* (The metaphorical ones, that is! Tho we know it's a mafia story, there will be real ones too...) The person Ben's trying to sell it to is insisting he comes over himself if he's looking for a higher trade for it. Either the buyer really doesn't believe Ben coulda come across anything really valuable OR they're actually looking for information on who it belonged to. It seems like a sorta family heirloom... Maybe it has a similar significance to the Balthuman crest tattoos on Quincey's chest and arm? Like a sorta "under protection of" warning? Maybe someone will recognize who it belonged to before? (Poppy's mom...? 👀) Maybe Candy will find out Ben stole it? (and that Tora is dating the owner of it? Pink hair is not gonna be too happy about that!) Or maybe going after her pin will get Poppy entangled in some shady mafia business she should not get involved in? AAAAA I'M SO CURIOUS!

I apologize if this comes comes out disjointed. I'm just trying to get all my ideas out, hopefully it makes sense! I'm glad to know more about Benjamin, but at the same time, I'm more confused by him! Back in episode 25, Tora says that Benjamin was at Miracle on a "suicide mission." What exactly was he trying to do. In 23, we see him in the club saying to "let go of [his] sister," but what was he trying to accomplish by doing that? He has to know that a kid walking up to some high-ish ranking clan members and yelling at them would not make them let his mom go if they "owned" her (with debt or otherwise). I get that he probably knew it wouldn't end well for him, but what about Candy? If he's saving up money to try to get her out he must care about her, how would it help her to get his ass beat? Also, she was there! Not right in that section anymore, but she was there at the club. Did Benjamin not know? Did he not see her (and did she not see him)? He told Poppy the delinquent center lie and to take him to Quincey because he didn't want to have to face his mom and tell her what happened at the club, but she wasn't home, she was there! Also, regarding the hairpin, I've read a lot of people's thoughts that the hairpin is somehow a mafia symbol and tied to Poppy's mom. Whether it's the Balthuman Clan or another one, I don't have an idea yet, but if it is a clan symbol, of any serious clan, wouldn't Quincey or Tora have recognized it? They've both seen it, Quincey said he remembered it in 45. This makes me think it's significance is something else. Thoughts?

Thank you again for yet another great episode! The flirting between Tora and Poppy melted my heart this week. Ok tin foil hat time. Could Candy and Benjamin be related to Gyu. Like Candy is Gyu's sister. In episode 34 he mentioned his sister to Tora when they are in the truck and how she has been asking about him in the club. Also we saw Candy asking if Tora was going to be at the club.Gyu also said that she has a kiddo. It makes me wonder if Candy's debt has something to do with why Gyu has so many jobs and why he was in tears in episode 15. He was thanking Tora for saving his life and even Tora was getting teary-eyed in that panel. We also know the Tora is avoiding Gyu's sister.

Okay, I think I’m finally ready to have an intelligent discussion about this chapter. Who would have guessed that Ben and Candy were actually related! I had always assumed he made that big scene in the night club as a decoy to pass along Poppy’s note, but seems like he was planning on barging in regardless. Maybe Ben isn’t a little shit after all, but how hurtful it must be for Candy that her son denies her as his mother and instead calls her his sister because he is ashamed of the life she leads. I am so interested in learning more about her debt and connection to the organization, since she works at a night club owned by Vincent. Okay moving on. 😭😭😭 at Poppy’s counting coins to buy the groceries and thermometer. I figured the cashier was talking about her in the last episode, but I appreciate the confirmation. Y’all she went over there pissed and angry at Tora, but still spent her last to take care of him!! 😭 Okay let’s talk about the office. Is it me or does Quincey always try to explain Tora’s actions away. (Telling Poppy to not be alarmed of his body guard, telling Poppy don’t think it’s weird he’s sleeping on the floor, telling Jacob he’s a regular guy and not mean)I feel like in his mind he’s protecting him and trying to brace folks to not immediately judge him. Idk.. let me know your thoughts. Anyway, I’m still dying at the blatant flirting, giggles, and Quincey’s obliviousness. And Tora’s smirk progression as he’s looking at Poppy, just ugh! Kill me now! 🥵I’m sure his choice of clothing is to hide himself and cover his tattoos, but still so hot regardless.

There is a lot to unpack here. Ben and Candy: she is doing what she can. She gets this may be for life and she is doing her best. She is also not hiding it. She also knows it’s an act. I can feel like her trying to get with Tora was for protection. Ben trying to get her out is noble, but is super dangerous. He also can but needs more information and has to be connected to the right people. I think people are right about Tora and Quincy. They protect each other. I’m still unclear as to how Quincy knows of the abuse Tora went through.

This is going down a super weird rabbit hole lol but I've often considered this everytime Poppy's financial situation has been brought up in the series. (I think Victoria and Vintage Nerd also touched on this). I get that as a fresh graduate in a big city, and especially in a small company, she might barely make enough to afford rent at a cheap place, far enough away from the main city. But it seems like Erdene (and even Jacob maybe) could be making more than Poppy. When we're first introduced to Erdene, she mentions her gym membership, and Poppy comments how that's a luxury she (Poppy) can't afford. On one hand, Gil could've genuinely hired her to ensure she gets experience and may have been up front about the pay, but methinks not. And speaking of Gil, he didn't seem too happy about Goldfish working with Q.B. Nyouko. Now, if I were in Gil's place, and my employee managed to land a super, big shot author, I would do everything to make sure my company gets paid a shit ton AND gets the recognition it deserves (AAAND treat Quincey like the best princess he is). Its interesting that Gil has not once attempted to meet Quincey, when he's been in the office twice now (maybe we'll see this happen in the next episode?) Like here you have a legit way of helping your company improve and you're not gonna do that Gil? Da fuck bro? I think that Gil has figured out a way to help his little company prosper, but that could be attached to the notebook

There's something that caught my attencion an has touched me so deeply: the genuine smile of Tora. It's a smile of hope, happiness... if you sometime felt the bliss of having back a love you've been considering long lost, you can understand the depts of his smile... that feeling as anything was possible, that Dreams really can come true, the excitement about what life can bring tomorrow (sometimes be in love feels like having super powers). Tora seems completly aware that he has fallen for her, he's kind of surrended to this feeling, and had acepted it couldn't happen... but can you imagine the joy feeling of having your lost true love back? Plus her acceptance of his reality and aknoledgement of his secrets? This is why I really want to protect Tora's smile. Poppy is happy too, e can see her full of bliss and excitement as a teenager when first falls in love... in someway it's the first time she falls in love: true love... this kind of love that makes you stronger, braver, generous... it makes me want to see them grow and fall in love with them more and more... and unfortunatly, when Vincent notice this (because he will), it will challenge them... will Poppy be Tora's strenght or his "kryptonite"? Lily will tell us...

One of the things I love about this comic (besides the obvious love story and hotness all around) is the lesson that teaches us, that we should really know but sometimes forget in this life: „don’t judge a book by its cover”. Here not a single character is what it appears to be at first sight. Poppy is not just the cute, innocent, lively, simple girl everybody pushes around – she is secretly smart and funny, extra caring, selfless, not so innocent (stash of spicy books anyone?) but also sometimes rough, vulnerable, and self-doubting. Tora is not just the intimidating bodyguard, the scary thug, the rough man, the self-confident and handsome man everybody sees him as – he is also secretly gentle and vulnerable just as Poppy, scared of his past/boss/life circumstances, ashamed of himself, empathetic, respectful and protective of his friends/loved ones. Quincey is not the self-centered, shallow man we thought at first. Not to mention gay. He is also a caring friend (procuring Gyu tea, carrying Tora 6 flights of stairs, caring enough for Tora and Gyu happiness, hiding Tora’s guns so that Poppy does not get scared), a bit naive and a bit mischievous. I think that Quincey is also very smart and there is a whole lot more of him left to be discovered. In the same way Ben is not the punk, the jerk we thought he is, at first sight, he also as a motive for stealing the hairpin, he is also considerate enough to feel sorry for what he has done when he sees Poppy again, is ashamed with his mom and wishes to „save” her from an unfortunate situation. Candy is not just the stripper that dances in a club, is actually a mom in a difficult situation, trying to pay a debt and to make the best out of whatever cards life has dealt her. Kudos to Lily for bringing her background in our attention, because I feel that we judge people way too easily based on appearances, on what they do, or how they look, and sometimes we need to be reminded that underneath it all there is so much more, that people’s character might surprise us and that some of them are behaving the way they are due to hardships and traumas we cannot even fathom. Looking forward to Gil’s backstory, to Vincent’s and to Goliath’s, and to whatever other side characters’ Lily wishes to present us. Lastly two other observations about the last few panels: - firstly the cadence of the frames when Tora walks in the room – omg I felt like in a movie, where the main hero walks in to save the day – beautifully directed, the cinematic movement, the shift of the eyes, the focus on the jaw, face, eyes, torso, boots in a certain order – perfect! - secondly, the beautiful contrast between the scene where Tora stands behind Poppy in this episode and the one where he stands behind Poppy at Gudrun’s – both are surprises to Poppy, but Tora’s demeanor has changed radically. We go from him ignoring Poppy and shouting at Quincey in ep. 43 to him stealing glances and secretly flirting with her in this episode. Emotional validation and intimacy for the win. I cannot express how much happiness their secret language, gestures, and looks bring me. Once again, a great episode, much to learn, much to enjoy.

Random question: Lilydusk, you made a few comments here and there about Tora possibly being a distant relative to Ulaan from Asura’s Bride, and as far looks go, he definitely could be. Is Tora actually Ulaan’s ancestor? And what about Poppy and Yuwa? Any relationship there? Or are their similar appearances just coincidence and/or drawing style? Like we say it in Brazil “if God made it, if fits” 🙌🍆🍑 Side note tho: Knowing how shitty Tora usually parks the spot wasn’t even that small. Tho we know his bedroom “parking” is way more precise than his street one! 😅 ---- Onto more serious topics now, Lily... I just love how no character in your story is one-dimensional, even the side characters have dept and nuanced stories! The motto of this story, besides all the dots being connected, really should be don’t judge a book by it’s cover – ‘cause that fancy executive woman might actually just be a broke ass recently graduated kid, mean and big bodyguard Tiger might just be a blushing love-struck little kitten, “ditsy pink hair stripper” is actually a witty and hard working mom, and even baby thug petulant Ben is a kid struggling with moral dilemmas. We even know Ben's full name! I bet even “no-face woman #2 at Goliath’s left side who might also be Poppy’s mom” has her own little side story by this point! 💃 There’s this constant underlying theme throughout the comic of what lies behind our social facades... We’ve been seeing that clearly with Tora, Poppy, Mr. Lam and more recently with Quincey. And now, with Ben and Candy as well. It’s truly amazing. It’s like “Who are you when no one is looking?” or better yet “who are you when someone is truly looking at you?”. We all have public personas we perform according to what’s expected of us, but who are we behind our social masks? I really appreciate how well thought out and multifaceted your characters are... It really makes them feel credible and genuine and their stories relatable. I also thought it was super interesting how in this episode we kinda got a bit of a “Purity vs Objetification” complex breakdown. Women are always being subjected to this dual standard of fulfilling either the role of Holy Mary, the virgin saint or Mary Magdalene, the whore and Poppy and Candy could very well embody that duality. Only, no character is that one-dimensional here! Poppy, though young, cute and innocent has shelves upon shelves of erotica books, is going through this sexual awakening with Tora (girl... we see you checking out that “car” 🍆 you recently sat on! Trying to gather info on how many inches bigger it was?👀), is witty and has a very nasty sense of humor, not to mention that she’s not willing to just “turn the other cheek” when people are being jerks to or around her! (looking at you Mr Lam, you chauvinistic old fart). Poppy is not just a cute innocent angel faced shorty. She’s feisty, determined, and strong willed... A nuanced human being! And having sexual desires and a bit of a mean hamster streak doesn’t make her any less! The same goes for Candy. Being a sex worker DOES NOT make her any less! That’s part of her (AND NO SHAME IN IT!), but that’s not all there is to her. She is also a hard working mom, who clearly cares about providing for her kid (tho should know how to hold out on slapping him even tho he's being a judgmental asshat...), and it’s doing everything she can to keep her morals (no stealing, no cheating) in doing so. And if men think any less of her for it THAT’S ON THEM NOT ON HER! Women are not just labels the patriarchy attaches to them! And this episode, with both Candy and Poppy really brings that forward. Going back to Candy and Ben’s interaction, I now realize how you often smoothly connect the parts of the story and we are introduced to Candy in ep #23 and right after it to Ben in ep #24 saying something about “his sister”. I wonder about this debt she seems to be tied up to. Could it be something similar to Sugar & Spice Poppy’s story? She seems skeptical about the idea of leaving that life... because she’s so entangled in it by now? I imagine there’s no leaving the clan once you’re in... She probably knows too much by now and the club is making lots of money with her performances... Now, going back to Ben, he seems so invested in getting her out of that life...Why does he feel so responsible for it? Could it be guilt? How did Candy contract that debt? She seems so young... Was she a teen mom? Is Ben’s father anywhere on the picture? Could Candy maybe have gotten some sorta felony charge by proxy? Is this the reason she acquired a debt she’s struggling to pay? ‘Cause she got a record? Going to Ben’s job to give him money every so often makes me think they don’t live together for some reason (it could also just be the different schedules but...). If so, how come? Did Candy possibly loose custody of Ben at some point? Is Ben fighting some “man of the house” male savior – parent/kid inversion complex there? In which he feels responsible for saving his mom from what he perceives as “naiveté” or recklessness? Or... From Tora’s dream sequence we know the Balthuman Organization targets young kids running away from foster care/orphanages, we also know Quincey volunteers at a center... something Ben calls a “deliquent’s center”. Could that be something aimed to help kids on the system, only, as Tora says it “they were not treating us right”? Or could it be juvy? Perhaps Ben got entangled with clan business during this whole ordeal with being placed away from his mom and then she tries to clear off his debt with the clan, and that’s why he feels so responsible... Perhaps it’s none of that and like Audrey Bonfig said on Facebook it’s like a lot of child psychologists say... That kids always find a way to perceive things as their fault and he loves mama too much and feels responsible for it. And what about that suicide mission??? 🤔🤔🤔 So much to uncover! Can’t wait for what comes next! There’s no boring chapter in MPL... My tinfoils are burning 🧠💥

This is my first time commenting, so I don’t know if I’m ready to share all of my deep analyses and theories, but I so love reading and processing all of your comments! First, these people work way too hard at Giant Goldfish Publishing to be struggling so much, come on sketchy Gil! They constantly work over the weekend, and you never see Gil there on the weekends. I’m assuming this is Saturday becomes Pops told Tora she was meeting Quincy “tomorrow” to discuss a project. I love her dedication, to many things. Also, does anyone else think she was about to get sick in the last panel? I think she may have lied about getting the flu shot to get a nice taste of those lips (not through a tissue) and now she caught Tora’s flu (we did see her sneezing in an earlier episode). I also don’t think Lily would have ended on that panel if it wasn’t important. She is very deliberate and thoughtful about everything! Lastly, I’m so glad to have found MPL, I’m super obsessed, like can’t stop thinking about it obsessed. And I’m glad to have found a group of open-minded, welcoming people that I can share this obsession with. I literally have no one else to talk about MPL with!

Just a theory, but I could really see Tora and Candy just having a mutual understanding of what it's like to hustle to survive. I'm sure his rough childhood could give him a soft spot for a struggling family, and knowing that at one point stuck his neck out for Gyu as well, wouldn't at all be surprised at him just looking out for all these good folks in less-than desirable situations, like himself. (Not at all disparaging sex work btw, so much respect for all sex workers 💕)

Y’al. Candy looks an awful lot like the picture of Poppy’s mom... my fan theory: Poppy’s mom is Candy, and Benjamin is either he brother or half brother. And maybe they figure it out because of Poppy’s hair clip? Like Candy sees it and recognizes it? How crazy would that be?!

I honestly can't see Tora or Poppy liking anyone else at this point. I think the main triangle has been there all along. I think it's the mistreatment by Poppy's ex. And I think Tora might meet him with Poppy there at some point, because the fact that Poppy is still dealing with trauma from it and Tora knows about it means they need to face it at some point. So if I hope we get to see Poppy's ex again and some real intimidation from Tora, if not a straight up a beat-down.
