Okay y’all! There was an insane amount to digest so here are my spark notes of key moments for chapter 59! Main theme: Perspective. It’s an interesting theme for us as readers. We are constantly reminded to step out of our own lives and look from another’s viewpoint. In this chapter we see Ben make assumptions about Poppy, and in turn, this makes her questions her own judgement of Erdene’s privileged life, and of others. That “life is always greener” mindset is true for everyone! And because of that, empathy and compassion are so important. Everyone has shit in their lives, even if they don’t show it. And no one’s is less important, even if some are obviously on a grander scale of shitty. Now rapid fire shit because THESE CHAPTERS ARE LONGGGG: -Those job application fuckers can suck it. -Poppy is cute as fuck. -Ben is a little shit, still a good boi though, AND also cute as fuck. -I want ramen now. -Ben and Poppy friendship is my new ship. -Green hair fucker can suck a cockroach. -Tora playing pool is fucking with my hormones. -Neko-chan is already a favorite and I don’t even know him. -Neko = cat, Tora = tiger. I’m seeing a theme here… -Need a secret garden of back alley fucking after that “did he just get laid” line. -Want to lick Tora’s collarbone -Green haired fucker got enough money and “power” for that suit and crew after he sold those politician secrets huh? I’m sensing something bad in your future sir. -The mention of Joe has me CRYING already. -Poppy is PLOTTING and I love her smart little head!! -Tora shrouded in smoke, with Poppy running towards him IS THE BEST CLIFF HANGER AHHHHHHH. -So Poppy and Tora are back together, the hairclip is resolved (FOR NOW), we have new characters, clan war is over, and yet Poppy is in deeper with the clan life already! -Lastly, we are seeing different sides of all the characters lives. All the things we’ve seen so far have been surface level. But now we see them better: Poppy struggling financially, Ben just trying to be a good kid in a life that makes it hard for him to be that, and Tora, having friends and a life outside the clan. JESUS CHRIST y’all this is TOO MUCH PERFECTION I CAN’T TAKE ITTTTTTT WE ARE BACKKKK. Idk if I can keep this up for all 4 🤣 my brain is mush already! But on to the next one!

His main goal is to clear his moms debt and has a change of heart like maybe finding an actual good job. I like ben...i also like how utterly blunt he is. I can appreciate that...its funny how he assumes so much about poppy’s life tho and thinking she has a well planned life. I think when ppl make assumptions about other ppls lives, we need to look into ourselves to think about the blessings we do have rather what we dont at times. This conversation between ben and her is shit i have said to family and friends. We often compare our lives to others but we often forget that maybe ppl dont have that support system that others do because of reasons they cant explain themselves (loss, abandonment, divorce). Little dude just crawling around doing bug stuff, Ben screams at him, gets yanks off the table by Poppy and tossed onto Dollar Store bargain bin Joker’s phone, and was like: “yeah, I’m gonna ruin this dude’s entire ass month.” It then proceeds to act like it’s been main lining heroine, or it’s been scuttling around in the discarded drug residue that surely coats every surface of Ares Street since it hatched out of its cursed egg......and flies right at Sentient Axe BodySpray’s FACE. I have missed that so much🥺😭 First of all the entire art work is just*muah*👌 Honestly, I don't know where to beginn! Even the passerbys are so well drawn! I love the hot red/hot pink lights that represent Ares street. It's alluring and if I was a moth I would have been devoured by the lights already! Now, I don't know what each and everyone on Lily's team does exactely, but SANDER, please know that I love your brain and your backrounds💋🙌 The setting for each end every panel is just stunning! Alright, so Poppy is job hunting(btw I didn't know she was broke and that the publishing company pays that bad! Or is it not a fulltime position?). I can relate to the struggles, frustrations and pain it comes with, especially when they only look at your appearence and rather than your experience and personality. In my country it's still a must to attach a photo to your CV and only based on your looks you wouldn't be invited to the interview. Guess personality doesn't count as much as the looks even these days. But the people at this restaurant must be blind! I mean just look her! She's wearing the cutest outfit ever and come on, how can you not love Poppy?! She's the sweetest person! The only thing missing on the job requirement is that they are looking for a 20 yo with 20 years of experience *frustrating lol*. The only thing I can't relate to is the medical benefits, because they must be included by law in my country *thank god*🙏 so that's one worry less at least. But while I appreciate that she's not being picky about a part time job, maybe it's not the right thing for her. Lololol just imagine she finds a part time job in the mafia business OMG 😂 I wouldn't be suprised if Tora would help her finding a job. So Poppy's shitty day continues. She misses the bus and meets up with Ben. Honestly, I didn't see that coming. I thought the Poppy brooch would be gone for good but I'm pleasently suprised! Deep down Ben seems to be a very good boy, though he also grew up in the environment of Ares street. Also him treating Poppy for a meal is just so cute. I wonder how old he is though...maybe it has been mentioned before and I forgot. Is he 16 maybe? Their prejudices are very interesting. Ben thinks Poppy has it easier in life just for the simple fact that she's not been sucked up in the swamp of Ares street, though she's assumingly broke. Interestingly he thinks he's better off money wise but still won't be able to achieve much in life due to his backround. And while Poppy doesn't like Ben being judgy it makes her realize how much she judges over others. Sometimes it's helpful if people put you in the same spot you put others in just to let you know what it feels like. These situations bring me back down to earth so I'm kinda grateful when they happen and I'm sure so is Poppy. Lololol I was laughing so hard when Ben saw the cockroach and started screaming like a little bish 😂🤣😂 Yep, that's me right there. And oh no...shitty day just got worse... NOW, grand entrance of daddy Tora SCREEEEEEETTTCCHHHH!!!! 💋🔥🤪🥳😭🤩😍🔥Damn, watching him playing pool is so hawt🔥🔥🔥 And while Poppy needs money, Tora seems to have too much of it, so he can afford the luxury the refuse it lol💸💸💸 But no thanks Sir, don't teach me your ways of how to make a living 🙈😂 The dude’s face when Tora told him to keep his money and the way he responded was everything🤣 Is it possible that he is subconsciously/unconsciously trying to change for Poppy? Meanwhile Ben and Poppy are being pushed around by some wannabe gangstas and I kinda understand the streetfood stand owners for not getting involved in this. They know the scene very well but now matter whether you know it or not, if I was in their place I would've probably hidden behind the stand, too. Anything else would mean the end of their business! Awwwww I like that Tora is known as "Alice's boy"☺️ Seems like him and Joe have always looked out together for the civiliance around Ares street🥺 This episode was a great opening and so wholesome! 🙌👏👏👏I've learned a little more about Tora in this chapter and can't wait to learn more!! Meanwhile, run into your man's arms, Poppy!!!🤗

What does the James Bond comment mean?

Just chiming in to congratulate Lily and team for CRUSHING the Season 2 premiere. Reading MPL again reminded me of what sets this comic apart. In general - using narrative to show what’s important/less important. Each MPL episode reminds me of Hunger Games, in that Lilydusk is the Gamemaker, and we’re all her tributes trying to figure out her game as we play it. But she directs our attention exactly where she wants it. For example, almost the whole first half of the episode is Ben meeting Poppy to give back the hairclip. So, do we see the hairclip? Nope. It’s given back off screen, and we hear in a little aside that that’s done and Poppy has it. With almost any other author, they would show us the hairclip handoff, I mean, that’s why they’re there eating noodles. But, not showing the handoff tells us something else - the hairclip is less important than what IS shown. And what is shown is a convo about assuming stuff and pre-judging people and Ben and Poppy connecting. Does this mean hairclip won’t be important later? Nope, it sure could be, but in this moment the Gamemaker is directing our attention to other things. And Lily directs our attention like a freaking magician. Look at first memory panel after noodle guy gives his speech about the little guys and Alice’s boys. How do we know what’s important in that panel? Facial features are dropped out, no dialogue, so that doesn’t clue us in. But we have dramatic light and shadow along perspective lines, and color. Three thug faces are in shadow, Poppy’s face is brightly illuminated - the light source is behind Poppy so she should be shadowed like the soup bowl and the bottle, but our brain accepts her being front lit because, ya know, magic art stuff. It makes Poppy the focal point. Not just Poppy- she’s not passive -we see her radiant and gathering herself for action in that moment of stillness, despite the looming faceless men all around her tiny self. Reminded me of the Jodie Foster elevator scene in Silence of the Lambs. Some quick points about the art in Ep. 59: 1. Beautiful, more intensive use of intimate character POV shots: Poppy’s POV of ad sign, Ben’s POV of Poppy and vice versa, then Ben’s view of bug, Tora POV shot of pool table 🥵, Ben POV of his hand getting smushed, Tora POV last shots of Poppy running at him. We’ve had POV shots before in MPL but I noticed these because they seemed so intimate. I could feel myself suddenly behind Ben’s eyeballs or Tora’s - very effective. 🙌🏽 2. Of course the weaving method of storytelling, jumping past moments then seeing them play out in the characters’ memories. I always love this and it really plays to the Master Gamemaker narrative style - guess what just happened, nope, guess again 👀. 3. Continuity - when jumping about continuity is crazy important and it just is spectacular so far in S2. 4. Love the “portrait mode” use of focus and blur to show a) what we should be looking at, and b) motion of figures in background. See pool scene and first scene. 5. Depiction of motion is superlative 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽. Ex: use of 3 side shots to show Poppy walking forward as the bus approaches. Ex: close shot of Ben with action lines and emphasis lines and broth to show flinging noodles, and subsequent snapshot of noodles in motion midair makes it magic. Ex: cue ball and Green Hair’s shoe, rapid motion shown through blur (as opposed to pov motion where object in motion is still and everything around it is blurred). Ex: Poppy running at speed is shown not just by the pose but also foreshortening, perspective lines, dramatic light and dark, and the horizon tilt. 6. Highlight/shading game crazy enhanced throughout, but for a great example look at Poppy in the last panel. New hair highlights, even sweat drops have highlights. Gah, even her teeth are shaded, the shoulder strap - it’s over the top gorgeous. 7. Hands were always masterful but are now just so fluid and solid. See: line and shading work on Poppy’s hands holding notebook in first scene. Detail of accurate finger positions of Poppy and Ben holding their chopsticks. Tora’s knuckles show the pressure of the hand position as he shoots, or his finger angles counting his money. 8. Using sound like a freaking film director. “Ya sliced beef noodles.” CLACK. This happens without visual, so you hear the scene before you enter the scene. Just like in a movie. 9. Random details that make the art so extra. Sun highlight on top of bus stop as she runs for bus. Or the character consistency on minor characters - noodle guy has the working man’s flat butt and drooped shoulders throughout. Or every single piece of clothing, lol. To me, the story in MPL is super clear and clean because of all of these storytelling and art techniques working together. Cannot wait to see the rest of S2 unfold. Hats off to Lily and team for an amazing S2 premiere. ❤️😘

Question- is Joe still alive? I assumed he passed away, perhaps met some unfortunate end,, especially since Tora has his ring and bracelet, but the way the towel merchants talked about him it seemed like they were talking about him in the present- a la “they’re both big guys” type talk.

First of all, I can’t stress enough the heart pounding excitement I felt leading up to this season premiere! Like a lot of people, MPL saved my sanity this past year and now it’s such a huge fixture in my life, I don’t want to imagine this story, the fandom and the friends I’ve made, without it. So I’m coming to pour all the love and excitement I usually ramble and leave on all the A-MAZING fan fictions this brilliant fandom has, here for Lily and anyone else interested in reading it, for each episode starting with season 2 onwards. Because I just have this build of freak out emotion that needs to escape somewhere. I’ve no idea if you’re see this Lily, but I’m going to post for each episode anyway, because you deserve to hear how amazing it is and how crazy I am about it. 😂 Let’s do this! Poppy looking for another job...I felt that struggle in my soul! But that sign on the door...oof! Don’t need to be working there with those requirements, Pops! Eesh! “Fifth times the charm!” I’m clearly super invested in these people because my first thought was, ‘When is this woman going to find time to sleep!’ with all the work she already does at GGP. But that’s my protective instincts coming through and I remembered this is Poppy who’s a total badass. Side note, I LOVE her outfit!! And I love when she has braids. Because I’m slyly jealous I can’t do them on myself at all. Ha! I was not expecting to get thrown into her meeting Ben so fast! I mean I had no idea what was coming anyway, but I was pleasantly surprised to have his character pop up. Also, their meal looked, wow! And the back and forth between Poppy and Ben was crackling. I mean he needs a bit of an attitude adjustment, but he’s a kid clearly trying to do the right thing, and because of that he’s gone way up in my respect. Also, reading Patty’s analysis of this episode really helped me open my eyes to him in a way I needed. (Check those out, they’re soooo enlightening and funny!) I freaking love Poppy’s expressions! Just re reading the episode now is making me laugh! And I could relate to the judgey part she acknowledged of herself. Who doesn’t knee jerk react to certain situations? Another thing about MPL I adore, it makes me look at things a different way and see similarities in situations around me, that I can maybe for forward reacting differently too. And I love a pun, so that ‘a-parent-ly’ had me clapping with joy. LOL! Oh shit, hell no! I don’t do cockroaches...At. All!! I’m with Ben! That bowl would be flying, flame throwers at the ready, this place needs to be burned down. Hell no!! Full blown shuddering right now at the mere thought. And that poor bowl of food wasted! Devastated me! *overheats* Bloody hell. Tora. That’s...bloody hell. My British is coming through, but damn, I can’t words. Lily...Tora in the pool hall, I just...I’m nope. Absolute sorcery! That’s a picture of pure heat right there. DAMN! Ok, I’m focusing, I am. Neko-Chan I know we’ve just met but I feel like I want to be your best friend. I know we’ve got such a tiny slice with him here, but I’m sold! I want more! Any little tidbit into Tora’s past and I latch on to it. Introducing an old friend is like huge amounts of gasoline to that fiery curiosity for me. I need moooooore! Talk about teasing, haha. Ah man, and then my heart started pounding when we went back to Poppy and Ben. Shit got real, real fast! Poor Ben just can’t catch a break. And with this asshole Waffle House son too! Clearly someone’s been making use of that money. I know this story inside out now so knew instantly who he was! Again, pleasantly surprised to see him pop up again so quickly, after wondering where he was with that video and the money he got from it. Hmmmm. Oh snaps, another tidbit into Joe and Tora, watching the ‘area’! I literally stopped reading, took a few deep breaths to calm myself and dived back in! I really hope we get some flashbacks with them because this other little tease is killing me! In the best way possible. But back to Ben and Poppy. The situation is looking tense as hell and Poppy’s expression was giving me all kinds of anxiety! So ending with Tora at sunset and Poppy running full pelt towards him screaming, “Run!” I would’ve got up and legged it out of there too! Tora’s surprise was everything!! I love him caught off guard, always by Poppy too. I’ve fast passed cause I’m thirsty and eager and just can’t help but throw all the love at MPL I can. But to be left on that cliffhanger...genius! I love the suspense this story brings. The very real need for more always. And never being disappointed when we get yanked back off the edge. Story aside, the artwork was beautiful! Just the frame with the smoke from his cigarette was incredible. The lighting, the setting. Especially towards the end with the light getting dimmer not just from the sunset but where they are and what was happening around them; it’s so visually stunning. I don’t find the right words when it comes to the art work, others definitely phrase it better than me. But best believe I notice it and I love it! So I cut this pretty close considering new episode drops tonight. But I’m determined to keep this up because I feel lighter already just getting all those feels out of me ready. Welcome back, Lily! ❤️
