Mayumi Tanaka has voiced Luffy in every single episode and movie in Japan since 1999 with the singular exception of an OVA from 1998 that predates the anime called "Take Down! The Pirate Ganzack!" that had an entirely different voice cast. She's a very well known VA and had done a *TON* of stuff other than One Piece since her first VA role in 1978. Most notably, for western audiences, Krillin and Yajirobe in Dragonball (and Z, GT, and Super) and Koenma in Yu Yu Hakusho. In English Luffy has been voiced by several actors depending on which dub you're asking about. In the Funimation dub (which is the one everyone probably knows as it's the current one) he's voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard, in the horrible horrible 4Kids dub he was voiced by Bella Hudson, and in the Singaporean Odex English dub he was voiced by Chuck Powers.

I personally hate all dubs everywhere for everything because they are generally less accurate translations of the original spoken Japanese than subtitles. When Japanese is translated into English accurately a lot of time the translated sentence is much longer and this leads to issues with dubs where you only have so much space to stick spoken English. It leads to less accurate translations to fit. I'm glad the dubs exist for people that like them and dubs in general have come a long way since the early days of anime in the sense that they're generally of much higher quality but I just personally can't stand them. I'd much rather read the subtitles and have the more accurate translation.

Yeah, Mayumi Tanaka is a legend, she's been voicing Luffy since she was 44 years old... and she's currently 69 and still going strong.

That comment actually highlights perfectly the main reason I prefer dubs. I tend to find that subs have the problem of sometimes being TOO accurate, as in either translating a line so directly that there's no personality in it or translating some kind of joke or cultural reference that English-speaking people just aren't going to get unless it's explained to them. I've already seen the latter happen a few times in the comments of these reactions. Likewise, while this sub has been pretty good at keeping the humor for the most part, I've already pointed out a few instances where I think the dub just genuinely has the better lines. One prominent example being "The dreams of men will never die!" vs. "People's dreams won't ever end!", which probably sounds fantastic in Japanese but awkward in English. Another example is Kaku's trait of talking like an old man, which was translated faithfully into English but essentially doesn't exist in this version, since English-speaking fans don't know the language cues to pick up on it. In short, I hold the opinion that unless you speak Japanese and live in Japan, you're not getting the intended experience regardless. It was made in Japanese for a Japanese audience. So I'd rather watch the version that personally entertains me more. Side note: I'm actually really impressed by how well modern dubs have managed to keep the same story despite the limitation you mentioned. Aside from a single instance where Garp was accidentally called an Admiral instead of a Vice-Admiral, I can't think of any time where the Funimation dub actually screwed something up with the translation. (And the less said about the 4Kids dub the better.)

Yes, Luffy's English actress, Colleen Clinkenbeard, has been playing Luffy throughout the entire series as far as I'm aware. And while she's one of the few cases where I actually prefer the Japanese voice, I have nothing but respect for anyone willing to commit to THIS role for so damn long.

As someone who has been studying and practicing acting and voice acting for years... i tend to gravitate towards watching animes in their original language with Subs, because more often than not... Japanese voice actors deliver such fantastic performances that you can FEEL (regardless if you speak japanese or not) all the emotions and dedication to the craft they have (more so if you have a trained ear for these kinds of things). Im not saying that English voice actors are bad... but when i compare the 2 of them... 75% of times the Japanese just leave English VAs in the dust in term of vocal performance. But i don't want to sound like a hypocrite.... i do like dubs as well, heck.. i grew up watching and loving shows and movies with Latin Spanish Dubs... and i do believe some of them are better than the original product. I appreacite Dubs for what they do... bringing foreign stories to a larger audience around the world... But my personal focus is on vocal performance and not so much on translation itself... which is why when it comes to Anime... i prefer Subs.

Agree to disagree there, but I spent a long time not even being able to tell what a "good" performance was supposed to be if I couldn't understand the language. I will genuinely say that the past few years have led me to finally grasp that. But voice acting is another area where I generally prefer dubs, which has less to do with any kind of quality and more the fact that I A) can listen to the show without having to watch the screen the whole time (I'm very fidgety and like to move around a bunch) and B) can pick out recurring actors from having heard them a LOT. Of course, I'm sure people who watch a lot of subs can do the same on that latter point, but I personally have almost no experience in that regard so this entire cast is pretty much alien to me.
