One think that is worth reminding you of is that devil fruit powers in general are pretty rare, especially out side of the Grand Line. If we go back to episode 1 a lot of characters thought Devil Fruits were only a myth just because no one had ever seen one. But I agree, Bluejam having no powers and being just a strong dude is a nice change of pace. Thats something I find a lot of people tend to over look. The further we go in the story and the more we interact with the super powerful characters in the world the more common these "Rare" abilities become and the more easy it is to forget that its really only a small portion of the world that has these.

Let's not forget a very crucial fact here..... In the Main story.... almost no one dies, because Oda has admitted that he hates killing characters unless it is completely necessary for the story to move forward. However... this rule doesn't apply to these flashabacks/origins..... where almost always a relevant character dies. Sabo dying without reaching his dream of being free..... is the final motivation for Luffy and Ace to become dead-set into going out to sea and become Pirates, because it's not only just their own dreams anymore.... they are now doing it for Sabo too, because he was never given the chance to do it. It's very similar to Zoro's flashback.... Being the World's Greatest Swordsman is his dream, but his undying motivation to achieve it it's also fueled by the death of Kuina, who died before she could try to achieve it. Which is why i don't think it's coincidence that in the very next episode we see the Revolutionaries visit Shimotsuki Village, where Zoro and Kuina lived.
