Its not really "trans" . Okama in japanese culture refers to a subset of men in the LGBTQ community Not all Okama would be gay or trans for example. But they can be. The idea is they adopted some "female" traits, be it mannerisms or clothing. A part of it is for example Cross dressing. Where they keep their manly looks like a beard, but wear makeup and "female" clothing. But its basically slang for LGBTQ men.

It's not trying to be mean to "trans" women but it is a bit derogatory. I.e. you wouldn't go to Japan and straight up call a crossdresser "Okama", but that is generally what Okama means. But, the depiction does come from a place of love, Oda genuinely loves the crossdresser community and has hung out with members, he thinks they're hilarious to be around. It all ties back into the overall theme of freedom. It's actually up there in anime for the most positive depictions of crossdressing in the entire medium, just remember at this point you're seeing it through the eyes of Sanji whose girl-crazy and intolerant. Luffy would love it there.

I've personally never had an issue with the trans representation in the show, especially since these episodes aired in 2009 when things were way different than they are today

Yeah sorry Katy, Zoro isn't your man anymore. That's Peronas man..... Zorona forever 😊

Oda actually frequents (or at least used to) some drag shows and has some friends in the community. As bad as his portrayal of cross dressers is by western standards, what he did was actually quite positive for queer folks in Japan, because most Mangas tended to do be a lot worse when approaching this subject

Tequila Wolf is some of the best, yet among the shortest, parts of One Piece. Not only is the story dark, real and SUPER heavy on the worldbuilding, but in the anime it is amazingly animated with a really unique artstyle. That being said, Robin is also such a good character.

These episodes do a good job in making you forget what the objective is which is Luffy trying to rescue Ace. Even though we cut back to Luffy and Hancock on the Marines ship, you are getting distracted by Hancock simping over Luffy. Imagining scenerios of them together, her jealousy towards Nami and Robin, and just the overall feeling that you would get towards your first love. I assume Luffy is her first and possibly only love though. Judging by her past and how she carries herself, I doubt she's had any interest towards any kind of love related relationships. Then towards the end of episode you get slapped into reality, back to the seriousness of the situation. Ughh, the writing in this show is so good :)

Zoro didn't say "you bitch". The translator made a mistake. He said: "Teme" means you".

Isaac Sato

Person of Japanese descent here. 'You bitch' is actually a very fair translation, and definitely not a mistake. Saying that 'Temee' (手前) simply means 'you' to an English speaker is actually kind of disingenuous, because English speakers see 'you' as a neutral word, whereas saying 'you' to someone in Japanese even in a more polite way can actually be pretty confrontational and aggressive. The best thing to do is to actually say the person's name and to attach the correct honorific, or to omit the subject entirely if it's already clear you're referring to them. 'Temee' (手前), on the other hand, is outright hostile and ridiculously, insanely aggressive. Like if you hear someone say (yell) 'Temee' in real life, they're essentially escalating what we can assume is already a heated situation to a fist-fight. 'Temee' translating to 'you' is like saying that 'asshole' in 'hey asshole' translates to 'you' because you're using it to call out to someone. Yeah, asshole does kind of mean 'you' in this sentence, but there's a TON more going on, and the nuance is completely different.

if you can't take a joke at your own expense, you can never be truly accepted. Also, strong difference between trans and cross-dressers. There was no such thing as "trans" in the public lexicon at the time that this episode was made. Even if trans individuals did exist, they were far fewer and far less known than present day. Also on a personal side note, I always found it icky that people want to be celebrated for their sexual preferences and fetishes. I wish you the best homie, but you don't see me flaunting the way I like to sling dick, and that's the energy I get from the queer movement. also, little sympathy for bullying as a claim to injustice. I was viciously bullied when I was a kid for being different in ways that I don't think kids today have seen or imagined. I grew and moved on, dwelling on it would've only kept me angry, and that would have stopped me from doing the things I actually wanted to do.
