the manga translates Ivankov saying "blood will tell" instead as "apple doesn't fall far from the tree", so seems like its similar to how you were speculating a minute earlier if we can know Dragon has conquerors haki since Luffy has it

Garp has been a hot topic to many for his decision to stand against Luffy. Even though they understand his choices, many are still on the opinion that he should've left the Marines and helped in the rescue of Ace. Which is completely understandable when family is involved. In the end, you see Garp agonizing over the situation and in the flashbacks/memories of them, it's them as children laughing along side him. He definitely held back enough to where it would look believable enough that Luffy knocks him down and that meant that Luffy also had to play his part as well. Garp tells him that if he doesn't stop him then Ace is going to die, which gave Luffy that push to go through with the punch. So many layers to this specific scene, such fantastic writing by Oda :)

I'm still 100% convinced that if Ace asked him for help, he would have. He was struggling as is. I don't think he could've stomached refusing him.

"Uh, no, they hugged, so obviously they're married." - I can't xD Boa is great. Crazy how Luffy got 3 out of 6 samurai present to be on his side (Boa, Jinbe, Crocodile). Also that Garp scene completely breaks me. Him remembering them as kids. Brutal. But yeah - I think he just played pretend and let himself get hit. LET'S GO - our boy is free! I love that animation! :)
