Vander Decken is probably the most rancid character Oda's ever created ngl. He gives Absalom from Thriller Bark a run for his money. Totally annoying and exhausting every time he's on screen. And it was fair to feel a bit off about Tom's brother, they DO hide his face for a suspicious amount of time. Plus he's extremely friendly and hospitable right away which is also usually a big red flag. But rest assured he actually is just a chill and nice dude.

Btw it's kind of important to point out that the little flashback of Hody and his crew being abducted by humans as children was not in the manga. It was added as a filler scene for the anime only.
