Luffy's power up was very much needed since he's the captain and has to keep his crew safe. Sabaody and Marineford really opened his eyes with how weak he was compared to the big players.

Luffy was taking the Yowa from the start of Yowamushi (coward) and adding the Hoshi from her actual name (Shirahoshi). So he's basically trying to say that she's braver than he thought and he wasn't familiar with her game

Yowamushi is something like coward, wimp, scaredycat or weakling, so Luffy calling Shirahoshi Yowahoshi is somewhat an upgrade to just bluntly only coward and crybaby

I think Luffy finally started to acknowledge her name, making a fusion between "Yowamushi" and "Shirahoshi, that's how he got "Yowahoshi". I doubt it's something deeper, but "yoai" means weak and "mushi" means bug, so "yowamushi" was something like "weak bug". So, "Yowahoshi" could be referring to "weak star" since "hoshi" in Japanese means star.
