EMANCIPATION

THE BROCA DIVIDE

Emancipation is definitely one of the worst episodes of this show. There’s a lot of WTF character moments. And as much as I love Daniel, I think he pisses everyone off in this episode. Personally, I feel like it’s a little out of character for him to tell Carter to just deal with the cultural differences. Also, I highly doubt something like this would even be made today.

Funny enough, Emancipation was written by notorious Katharyn Powers who also is know for some very bad TNG and DS9 episodes. Thankfully this is the low point for Stargate lol, get it out early.

I know you weren't really being serious, but your light hearted commentary and in the moment reaction, actually raises an interesting point for The Broca Divide. The show will continue to display some interesting opposing philosophies on the interactions between developing cultures. Very arguably 4 does this better than 3. The treatment of one over the other. The Goa'uld display superiority and dominance, curtailing knowledge to stunt development. What is 'faster' might not necessarily be better or practical for the long term. If developing relationships is the sustainable goal. Rather than perpetuating patterns of imperialism. They had this very open and settled argument in the episode. The SGC's directive, by learning about and not just taking from civilisations they encounter. To be very mildly irritated at stunted cultures development and understanding, because of Goa'ald and other possible races interference. Is like scoffing at a 5 year old because they don't know anything yet. Or patronising an 18 year old because the governing bodies have restricted what they learnt in school to keep them uneducated. If we take from a modern popular vernacular, in instances like this, some could say, your privilege is showing. One element of the episode narrative was to symbolically depict this contrasting dividing line. To provide commentary on where we have come from and how much we still have to learn. Even when examining cultures and civilisations we think we have improved from. Teal'c had maybe the best line of the episode. As an outsider to one of earth's western cultures, he provides commentary on how little we are different. Particularly in how we behave for self preservation. Illuminating that it's just different forms of the same behaviour. Or at least his perception of it.

As cringe as the all time stinker episode and naming the next episode after a phrenologist were, it is a lot of fun watching the show take wild swings as it tries to find its footing. The bones of the show are all here, they're just covered in some Lovecraftian horror flesh that is slowly morphing into its true form.
