I actually met Shemar a few months after this episode aired when he was home visiting his mother in the Bay Area, where I'm from. We ended up chatting for nearly an hour about first the struggle of having a parent with multiple sclerosis (his mom, my dad), but ultimately about this episode because of stuff in my history. He's a very sweet, articulate, and kind man and I LOVE his work on this episode as well.

So, I hate everything. I just wrote a very long comment about the episode, and then my laptop crashed... So, uh, fuck my life very much! Haha I won't rewrite the whole thing, because I'm upset now. But I will say this was one of the episodes I was really looking forward to your reaction to as we find out what happened to Morgan. And I love that they had it be Morgan who went through this on the team. Because it's Morgan. Ya know? He's this big strong man, this FBI Agent who tackles Unsubs and kicks down doors. But that doesn't mean he can't be a victim too. It doesn't mean he's immune to abuse. And I think that probably helps a lot of kids who go through similar experiences really come to terms with what happened to them. That being strong doesn't make it your fault. Doesn't mean you should've been able to stop it. I also understand both Morgan and the Team's POV's, as the team just wanted to prove his innocence and Morgan just didn't want them knowing what happened to him. And the Detective, I hate that he tried to push the blame onto Derek. But it's understandable. Children were getting murdered and to him, Derek was the only viable suspect and he just wanted to protect the kids and take him down. When he found out what happened, I truly think he regretted everything, learning what he'd been going through as a kid and that he'd just made things worse for him. Doesn't make it okay, but he did seem remorseful which is good. :) Love the first scene too, with the Physics Magic. First with just Reid, JJ and Garcia, and the girls being all excited by it, then Emily joining in too and also being excited by it. Then Hotch catching them and the girls retreating and Hotch reprimanding him for doing Physics Magic at work when they've TALK ABOUT IT! (He literally said they've talked about it before. SO FATHERLY! Haha) Then he praised him for the distance and smiled as he walked away, and Reid looked so proud. GAH! So cute! Then Morgan's sister figuring out who Spencer is by his rambling and revealing that Derek talks about him to them. (And Reid's little passive aggressive moment with the cop. I love when he gets passive aggressive... Haha) (I also love that they gave him cake... Literally no one else had cake, but they gave Spencer cake... Probably took one look at him, saw how skinny he is and decided he needed some food in him...) FUCK CARL BUFORD! Morgan's scenes with James and Buford break me every time. First him revealing what happened, admitting it out loud for the very first time to James. Then confronting Buford and truly accepting that he did everything himself. Buford may have got his record expunged and done some things for him, but at the end of the day, Derek is the one who actually put in the work and did it. And Buford is no more than a child molester and murderer... But seriously. FUCK! CARL! BUFORD! In a way, they've been kinda leading up to this though, I think. With how Morgan reacts to child rapists and all that. It's always seemed kinda personal for him. We talked about his reaction to them near the start of the season, but I couldn't say much because of spoilers for this. But it explains his reaction so much. It IS personal for him, because he understands to an extent what these kids are going through. And it pisses him off that these children are having to experience these things... :( And once again. The most important words I have ever said and will ever say. FUCK! CARL! FUCKING! BUFORD! :)

Wow, that’s awesome, I’m glad he’s as kind as he seems. And I am so sorry for what you went through.

I have never met a Carl (or frankly seen one on television aside from Carl Winslow as far as I can recall) that FUCKING CARL doesn't fit.

honestly fuck carl buford. Lets make t-shirts! Such a horrible thing to watch cause I love Morgan so much and this hurts my soul. And you are so right, I was thinking about it later that this has been established because Morgan gets really angry with child molesters and takes those cases really personally.

OMG IM SO JELLY. He seems like such a sweetheart and down to earth guy. He is also super talented. I'm so happy you got to talk to him about your dad and he shared his experiences with his mom.

So I'm rewatching this reaction, and I am still so pissed off about my comment deleting itself... Hahaha it happened a few times, and it never got easier... :(

Being from Southside Chi, this story struck especially close to home. This area was literally the main territory of R. Kelly. My brothers used to hoop with him. Many young kids are preyed on and victimized by predators of all kinds, whether they’re groomed into gangs or sexually targeted by “mentors” in the community. Communities like this are rife with easily exploitable young kids because not only does poverty lead to a myriad of dysfunctional homes, there is also a strong racial disparity that makes Black kids the most likely to be targeted yet the least likely to be prioritized for missing persons cases. And pay close attention to how the officer clearly desired to arrest and imprison Derek even at a very young age despite him likely showing clear-cut signs of abuse. All of these things play a role. And it’s so rare to see Black men depicted this way on television. Kudos to the writers of Criminal Minds. Surely this episode helped a lot of male victims of SA out from similar backgrounds.
