David is saying Ma'am. Depending on the region, letters are pronounced variedly all over the United Kingdom. David's Scottish accent does often shift back and forth on the 'mar'm sounding of the word, depending on how quickly he his saying the word. The more assertive he is, the harder the r sound comes across in his address to his superiors.
