This is technically PART 2 of "Learning about Corporate America" from back in August - but even if you're not all caught up, you'll learn about the biggest loser in the world - and how HR isn't necessarily on your side...

Nuh uh, didn't happen, this story was impossible. In all seriousness though, the longer Erin talked, the tighter my hands went around Tiny Tim's imaginary throat. What a creep and a dirtbag and just a straight up LinkedIn liar.

Hyperhero2

(the deleted comment was mine, turns out you can't do line breaks on mobile!)

Sure Erin did some careless things at the beginning but that guy is a psychotic liar that should’ve been fired. Also i love hearing you guys talk about anything for these bonus podcasts.

I guess I'm live tweeting my comments for this. Who starts talking elections with a colleague they just met one minute ago?

Kim Wheeler

Omg... Just from the rest of his first conversation I'm guessing this is someone who thinks he can and should control everyone and everything around him. I find it hard to believe that wasn't all purposely to try and make you feel intimidated.

Kim Wheeler

Ok, finished now. So sorry you had to deal with that. And so glad you were able to move on to pastures new. Sometimes people do make social faux pas or not realise something is inappropriate. Generally, I try to be forgiving of that because 1. Everyone does it sometimes and 2. There are reasonable reasons some people might do it more than average. In life in general tbh I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. But that means stepping back and thinking about intent and whether something is actually a problem - and with TT's actions it very much seems like it was more than just not knowing he was being inappropriate. To start with, he made racist comments which can't be spun any other way. Secondly, he outright lied about multiple things. The gall to complain about you talking politics when he brought it up? And thirdly, he clearly demonstrated that he had understood that the things he was saying and doing were making you uncomfortable and instead of apologising and asking clarifying questions if needed in a polite way, then changing his behaviour, he continued and then tried to play victim when you didn't ignore it. To put it another way. I think if you go in with openness and kind intention you can usually tell if someone is fumbling with kindness or just doesn't care about how they're hurting others, and based on everything you've said it very much sounds like you got that read and this guy is the latter. He formed a snap judgement on you based on basically nothing and then, instead of being open to learning more, he assumed that was accurate and let it colour how he behaved towards you from then on. And I'm cautious about saying this without any direct evidence but I wouldn't be surprised if gender also factored in, considering the "all girls" comment he made alongside the way the "You're a manager" comment came out of left field, plus the nature of his apparent assumptions about you.

Kim Wheeler

Omg surprise surprise at the end with the brother owning the company... I KNEW IT, when you said about why would he leave because he thought they were going bust, I thought "One reason could be if he started the company/was involved in leadership". Also, Erin is right, there are lots of great Quakers!! It's a very wide religion with the term used by a lot of groups, so obviously not every Quaker is wonderful, but the overarching ethos of kindness, fairness, self reflection and finding meaning in the way that works for you seems great.

Kim Wheeler

Yes please cousin podcast!!!

LunaaLagoon

Erin you are NTA. Tiny tim should've been fired at least 5 times and yet the company defended a new employee over a manager that has been there for 10 YEARS? That's insane. I'm glad you made the decision to leave and I hope you are happier in your new job!

Randzy

What the hell? This sounds like something from a drama show or something. It's insane that you had to deal with this. I'm getting major asbergers vibes from this guy though, some of the things he is saying and his behaviour lines up with a (sadly) ex friend of mine. Long story there...

Jacqueline Fahrner

Erin omg. I have never related with you more in my life. Not only could I go on my own two hour epilogue about my HR BS at a former job, but I also am trigger as shit when people don't believe me which is OFTEN. I think a lot of it is literally patriarchy crap, even in this situation. Don't believe the woman who is literally being harassed and having things happen to her cause maybe bitches are liars. Like omg.

Ernie

I WISH it didn’t happen 😭😭😭😭

Thomas Atlae

Erin, please please please, I don't care about the subjects, we just want to hear you talk about anything. You are a fantastic story teller and you and Jack bounce off each other so perfectly, you guys are amazing.

Kyle

Oh my god, as a manager I absolutely DESPISE having to be "professional". Erin's venting is borderline cathartic for someone who can't participate in workplace gossip-mongering and actual criticisms/judgements of others when the beast in me just wants to be FREEEEE

imwithpluto

So first off, thank you SO much for telling the story. That was harrowing, and i'm angry for you and proud of you for getting through that, Ernie. That's some of the worst stuff a person can go through in corporate America, and you handled it about as well as a human being could. Second, you're asking what we want to hear next: If you're willing, i'd love to hear the story behind the pause between the podcast seasons. i believe i've heard it was related to panic attacks, but i've always been curious about what happened. ♡

Ernie

I think it may be antisocial personality disorder….my therapist and I have spent many many many hours trying to get to the root cause

Randzy

Oh yeah I could believe that, im glad your therapist sees something there too. I hope talking about it on the podcast has been cathartic for you.

Haylee Sullivan

Erin I am soooo late but please tell the cousin story

Jerry

Just finished the episode and my sister is actually in a similar situation with a coworker she has! My sister is a manager for a security company for the convention center in Los Angeles and she’s had such bad interactions with a women on her team and almost exact situations where they have accused my sister of bullying for simply trying to hold her accountable for her tasks and expectations so now she’s also stuck not being able to file her own complaint because it would be seen as retaliation! It’s extremely frustrating for her to point of her also debating where she should continue her career there it’s crazy!

Jose Gonzalez

Tiny Tim seems kinda low key unhinged, for him to do all that, and then Erin leaves and he leaves too? Kinda seems like someone didn't want to be held accountable for getting a 10+ year employee to quit

DirttGrubb

This guy is a Tim Robinson character holy shit

Peyton

I would love to grab a beer with Tiny Tim. I wonder how tiny he is? Is he tiny like Mike TV from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? Remember when he shrunk himself by transporting himself into the tv? Is he that tiny? If he is maybe I just plop him in the beer and walk away. Also tell the cousin story! Thank you! TTYL!

A

Imagine not believing two women who come to you and tell you that a man is making them uncomfortable Especially as a fellow woman in the corporate environment

theo

obviously i can’t know but from my life and career experience it sounds like he may have been on coke
