CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

She is presumed dead having gone missing in the forest but she is in fact still living in a cottage called Brickwall. Her house mate called Errol Klein has reliably told you so. This secret has only been entrusted to you and though you hired Baldric to destroy her she tricked him and he failed. He believes her dead. It us up to you Edeline to destroy the demon child. Remove her heart and get rid of it. Below see the directions to the cottage. Do not look the child in the eyes—she can bewitch. Silver and hawthorn are helpful agents against these demons.Following these instructions were more jotted notes: Dressed in peasant clothing, dirty. Will try putting the child to sleep with theriac in food. Herr Klein assisted you. He is to be trusted. May God be with us in this task.FIRST TRY you were interrupted by the return of her companions and could not do anything else.Herr Klein arranged another opportunity. Reina suspected nothing from the first encounter. You will go again as a farmer’s wife selling vegetables. Will try the theriac again.  Bringing extra vial of the drug in case needed. Kept eating hawthorn in meals to protect ourselves from being drained by the demon. Plan is to tie girl up with silver dipped ropes to prevent anything occurring should she wake during the process of removing her heart. Using a silver blade dagger to destroy her heart.Edeline reread her notes over thrice before going to her repository and finding the notes hidden in the books there telling her about the evils of the creature the vampir.Deep in her heart she had a terrible feeling for she did not remember either incident of going to destroy her step-daughter. The girl had altered her memory somehow.How and why Edeline was alive she was not sure but she knew that if she did not recall the death of Reina in the forest as per Edeline’s own plan then it must not have occurred. And she must complete her mission.She picked up her quill and pulled out ink to scribble new notes:SECOND ATTEMPT Girl has altered our memory and we do not recall that she was ever in the forest or us going to this cottage in the forest to destroy her. Assuming it is not safe to return under the guise of a peasant woman. She has left us alive for reasons unknown.Later, after a few more days had gone by, Edeline had more to add:Sent word to our comrade but no response regarding Herr Klein. Fearing the worst. Silver ropes were missing from the cart. Do not recall what happened to our peasant clothing but do remember changing into gown when getting back from forest. Theriac vial also missing. No sign of dagger either.Edeline had to concede that maybe she had succeeded in destroying Reina but did not remember because the girl bewitched her before meeting her end. It took several more days but The Dowager Queen was able to privately confirm that Reina was still alive at Brickwall Cottage.Her heart was steeled. She would try again and this time she told herself she could and would not fail to destroy this demon creature. Armed with more theriac, new silver dipped rope and dagger and tarts filled with apple and hawthorn berry she would kill Princess Reina if it was the last thing she were to do.Third time’s the charm, after all? This daughter would meet her death.
